How often have you heard that for property, it's all down to location, location, location?

Jalan Suka, by all accounts, is ideally located.

It's about a five-minute walk to the MRT stations, a 10-minute drive into the city and with good food all day, all night.

But there's a catch - it's in Geylang.

Until about 10 years ago, streetwalkers limited their trade to Lorongs 18, 16 and 14. That's a five-minute walk away.

Now, they are a bane to residents living in two- and three-storey walk-up apartments on Jalan Suka.

The unhappiness rose to the surface when Mr Adam Goi, a resident, wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on his Facebook page last week.

In his letter, he outlined the lack of security and worsening well-being of the residents at Jalan Suka.

"Every day and every night, we are victimised by the incessant noise that goes on throughout the night and even the day, large crowd of foreign workers filled the streets, streetwalkers chatting loudly and turning on the music on their radio or mobile phones... pimps becoming the de facto authority in the streets," he wrote.

Cops aware

When approached, the police said Mr Goi's open letter to the PM has been brought to their attention and they are aware of the situation along Jalan Suka.

Mr Goi said his girlfriend was intimidated by a pimp on July 8, when she was driving out of the lane.

"The pimp slammed his hands on my girlfriend's car, and she is still traumatised by the incident," he wrote.

He said that not only does open-air illegal gambling take place on weekends, peddlers selling contraband cigarettes have been doing so freely over the last few years.

"Last month, my immediate neighbouring unit has become a brothel, and from where I stand I can see an opposite unit being renovated, and soon it'll be another brothel," he said, adding his family has not been resting well and it is beginning to take a toll, emotionally and physically.

Some of the residents, who have lived there for as long as 50 years, said it was only in the last 10 years that "the sleaze from other parts of Lorong 24 spilled over into our quiet street".

"It used to be a safe neighbourhood, where everyone knew everyone else and the nightlife was kept way over at Lorong 22 and 24," said a 73-year-old homeowner, who wanted to be known as Aunty.

"Now Jalan Suka is lined with pimps and their girls from Vietnam and India. They are very noisy because they quarrel among themselves. Also the potential clients walk up and down to shop for their services," she said, declining to give her full name for fear of reprisals from pimps.

She said over the last five years, brothels have been "sprouting like mushrooms as families move out, unwittingly selling their homes to pimps".

The New Paper checked out Jalan Suka last Friday and found it teeming with activity.

Also crowding the road between Geylang Lorong 24 and 24A and making it almost impassable to cars, were kerb-crawlers - men in search of sex with the prostitutes.

"They are like window-shopping until they spot something they like. Some of the women are also very brazen, walking up to the men and giving them a squeeze in their nether regions," Aunty said.

A police spokesman said: "We have been actively working with the MP (Member of Parliament), Dr Fatimah Lateef, her grassroots and other Government agencies to address this issue."

He added that the police conduct regular anti-streetwalker enforcement along the street, and there are major operations to target vice and other illegal activities.

"The most recent major operation was on July 1, which resulted in the arrest of 32 women for vice-related activities," the spokesman said.

But Aunty said it has been a cat-and-mouse game with the pimps.

"The girls and their pimps are not afraid of the police. Previously a passing patrol car would send them running. Now the girls and their pimps just stay put," she said.

In his letter Mr Goi urged the PM "to take a personal interest on this matter as not only we have (sic) lost faith in the policing ability as well as authority of the SPF (Singapore Police Force) in this area".

"The agency is only interested in sending patrol cars and police officers on foot on rare occasions, which doesn't amount to improvement to the situation, given their brief and inconsequential presence," he wrote, asking if this was a case of negligence.
