1) Click User CP on the menu bar just below the title bar of the forum.
2) Click Edit Signature at the first option in control panel on left side of the website beside ur Latest Point Received table.
3) You'll then see a Preview panel on the top and then the space for you to type the signature at the below panel just below the word Your Signature.
4) Type something which is agreed on for uniformity on the space.
5) Then click Save Signature and you're done. :D

At the Dewan Negara yesterday: Massage parlours 'a front for prostitution'

THE message on massage parlours was clear yesterday: They are little more than a front for female and male prostitution.

Senator Datin Dr Nik Azizah Nik Yahya had fellow senators nodding when she said that some massage parlours offered more than the kneading of tired muscles.

She said that while masseuses were available for sex acts with men, there were also parlours that operated as rendezvous points for gays.

Qualifying her statement by saying that some were above board, she said her research had revealed that most had breached the fine print on their permits.

This prompted Senator Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi to ask if any of the parlours were only for men.

"Some of these massage parlours are fronts for gays. They are used for sex parties. I have heard stories. The media, too, have highlighted this," she said while debating the Royal Address at the opening of the session.

Nik Azizah had the House in rapt attention when she spoke about "women in glass cages" in some "red light" areas in Kuala Lumpur.

"You don’t have to go to the Netherlands or Thailand for this. The girls are kept in an aquarium and only have numbers and a letter to indicate their nationality."

Nik Azizah’s reference to glass cages caused some confusion, with Senator Siw Chun Earn rising to ask for clarification. "What are the numbers and letters that you talk about? Can you tell us where you got the details from?"

Nik Azizah said she had been referring to the fact that some parlours or spas had women sitting in glass enclosures with numbers and large letters like "F" or "T" on their person.

Pemangku Pengarahnya, Adilah A Aziz, berkata tindakan itu diambil bagi memastikan bandar raya ini bersih daripada aktiviti penjualan VCD, CD dan DVD cetak rompak kerana sebelum ini bukan saja dikenali sebagai lubuk bagi kalangan penduduk tempatan, malah negara jiran.

Last week managed to check in Hotel Triumph Star (I think). The one opp City square and behind Merlin Tower. Noticed theres a Thai Massage centre on the 2nd floor. Saw quite a number of Thai chio one. Just wondering beside the normal body and reflexology massage, do they offer special services? ;)

MUAR: Tidak sampai sebulan menghentikan operasinya, laman web persendirian menggunakan `Yahoo! Groups’ yang menyebarkan gambar bogel gadis Melayu kini menyambung semula operasinya.

Tindakan pengendali laman web lucah berkenaan semestinya menimbulkan kelegaan dan kegembiraan kepada ‘penagih seks’ di kalangan ahlinya lebih 5,000 orang itu.

Ahli laman web tidak senonoh itu menyokong tindakan menyambung semula operasi yang dilakukan pengendalinya sambil memuji keberaniannya berbuat demikian.

Pada 29 April lalu, laman web lucah itu dihentikan operasinya beberapa hari selepas kegiatan tidak bermoral yang dijalankan ahli laman web berkenaan disiarkan dalam ahkbar ini pada 27 April lalu.

Melalui e-mel yang dihantarkan kepada ahlinya, pengendali laman web persendirian itu memberitahu pemberhentian operasi terpaksa dibuat kerana isu berkaitan mereka sedang panas diperkatakan.

Harian Metro mendedahkan laman web persendirian itu memaparkan gambar dan klip video lucah membabitkan gadis dan wanita Melayu.

Menurut pengendali laman web terbabit tujuannya mewujudkan laman web persendirisan itu sebagai pengajaran supaya berhati-hati ketika berasmara jangan sampai gambar mereka dirakam pihak lain.

Laman web itu turut memuatkan gambar bogel artis yang pernah menggemparkan tanah air selain pelbagai aksi gambar gadis tempatan.

JOHOR BAHRU: Peniaga cakera padat (CD), video cakera padat (VCD) dan cakera padat digital (DVD) cetak rompak di dua pusat beli-belah di pusat bandar raya ini, terpaksa menggunakan taktik baru dengan hanya menjual barangan yang ditempah sahaja.

Penjualan juga hanya kepada mereka dikenali atau dipercayai dan tempahan dilakukan menerusi telefon, email atau berjumpa terus dengan jurujual yang berada berhampiran premis yang ditutup.

Taktik itu terpaksa dilakukan, berikutan anggota penguatkuasa Kementerian Perdagangan Dalam Negeri dan Hal Ehwal Pengguna (KPDNDHEP) Johor `berkampung’ di beberapa pusat beli belah, sejak Sabtu lalu.

Seorang jurujual yang ditemui berkata, penjualan secara terbuka kini tidak boleh dilakukan seperti biasa, berikutan operasi berterusan pihak berkuasa.

Berikutan itu, katanya orang ramai yang ingin membeli CD, VCD atau DVD perlu membuat tempahan menerusi telefon atau laman web.

“Biasanya jika seseorang itu penduduk tempatan, mereka boleh membuat tempahan menerusi telefon, sebelum bekalan diperolehi dalam beberapa jam atau hari (bergantung pada tajuk), sebelum boleh membuat transaksi di tempat dipersetujui.

“Selain itu, pembeli juga boleh melayari laman web seperti yang tertera di kad perniagaan kami. Bagaimanapun, biasanya cara ini digunakan pelancong asing terutamanya Singapura kerana kami membuat penghantaran percuma,” katanya.

Tinjauan Harian Metro di sebuah pusat beli belah di Jalan Dato Sulaiman, di sini mendapati, kira-kira 20 kedai penjualan cetak rompak itu terpaksa ditutup dan hanya segelintir kedai mempunyai kakitangan di hadapan premis.

Langkah itu terpaksa diambil berikutan sekumpulan 20 hingga 30 anggota penguatkuasa KPDNHEP ditempatkan di pusat beli belah itu dari jam 10 pagi sehingga 10 malam secara berterusan dalam tempoh sebulan.

Harian Metro pada 22 Mei lalu melaporkan Pemangku Pengarah KPDNHEP Johor, Adilah A Aziz, berkata tindakan itu diambil bagi memastikan bandar raya ini bersih daripada aktiviti penjualan VCD, CD dan DVD cetak rompak kerana sebelum ini bukan saja dikenali sebagai lubuk bagi kalangan penduduk tempatan, malah negara jiran.

Katanya, dalam operasi Sabtu lalu, 31 kedai penjualan VCD, CD dan DVD di sebuah pusat membeli-belah terkenal di Jalan Datuk Sulaiman, di sini diperiksa.

Menurutnya, operasi itu dijalankan serentak di seluruh negara selepas menerima arahan daripada ibu pejabat KPDNHEP di Putrajaya.

Holiday Plaza is very quiet these few days due to opearsi. Not only DVD/VCD, even pirated LV bags and pirated computer software also closed. Without these shops, the glory day for Holiday Plaza is numbered.

DVD stakeout at shopping malls

KUALA LUMPUR: In a move to stamp out DVD and VCD pirates, enforcement officers from the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry will be stationed at popular shopping complexes in five towns and cities.

Deputy Minister Datuk S. Veerasingam said the officers had been stationed in complexes in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Kota Kinabalu, Johor Baru and Kuantan.

In Johor Baru, 50 officers have already been monitoring the situation round the clock at the Holiday Plaza since last weekend after a raid on one of the shop lots at the mall in which 200 pirated DVDs and RM100,000 worth of pirated goods were seized.

“DVD and VCD piracy is still under control but we're intensifying our efforts to wipe it out,” he said.

“We have taken action against a lot of people and have closed down four companies in Kajang, Batu Caves and Johor while another seven are under investigation.”

He said the ministry had also set up an intelligence unit to gather information on the peddlers as well as factories producing the pirated DVDs and VCDs.

“The unit was set up recently with a small workforce. We hope to score some successes soon,” he told The Star.

After evaluating the progress in the five areas, the monitoring might be extended to other towns, Veerasingam said.

The Motion Picture Association of America, he said, had also sent a letter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi thanking him for action against piracy.

He said it was part of the National Integrity Plan to enhance good business ethics and urged consumers to play their part by not buying fake products.

He said that most of the raids were made after complaints were made by the intellectual property owners who had purchased the pirated goods.

“Sometimes our officers would go in plain clothes to try and buy the fake items. Normally the items are not displayed openly but upon request the operators would bring them out for the customer,” he said.

Between Jan 1 and April 30, 2006, the enforcement officers had undertaken 6,634 inspections, with 1,005 cases registered and goods worth RM54.3mil confiscated.

Crackdown on fake goods in JB

JOHOR BARU: The state Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry has taken the piracy war a step further by clamping down on premises selling fakes.

On Saturday, some 60 officers from the ministry, police and the Johor Baru city council (MBJB) raided the Holiday Plaza here, checking 31 outlets and seizing more than 200 DVDs. A day later, 10 other premises were raided and the enforcement officers seized more than RM100,000 worth of pirated goods.

“The pirated goods were cheap imitations of branded items, like belts, wallets, handbags and sunglasses,” said the division's acting director Adilah Abd Aziz.

“On the same day, a 20-year-old youth was also arrested for selling pirated DVDs in Pasir Gudang, and 530 DVDs were seized from him,” she said, adding that he would be charged under the Copyright Act 1987.

She said a team of 50 enforcement officers were being stationed at Holiday Plaza to monitor the situation.

The move is believed to be a last resort following numerous reminders to shopping complexes to voluntarily refrain from piracy.

“As of now, these personnel are being divided into three teams, with each team in charge of a zone at the shopping complex, and working in shifts of two,” Adilah said.

She added that the officers would check every outlet.

Adilah said the officers would be stationed there from the time the shopping complex opened for business until it closed at night.

“We plan to do this for at least one month and hope to curb piracy at this complex,” Adilah said, adding so far none of her officers had been harmed.

She said other than Holiday Plaza, the department also raided a hypermarket in Tampoi last week. The division has stationed five officers at the premises.

Holiday Plaza is similar to Petaling Street in Kuala Lumpur, and notorious for the sale of fake and pirated goods. The complex has been raided many times and some of the outlets have secret doors, which are monitored by closed circuit television cameras.

Dear all, I got some problems here and need some advice.

A friend of mine (who is not a samster) is asking me for help. His bosses from KL will be visiting JB next week and as you all know when all the "ma lak lou" leave their house/hometown, the werewolf's tail, tougue and dick will appear hunting for local dishes.

JB hotels beef up security after spate of robberies

Hotels in Johor Bahru City here have beefed up security after robbers hit several budget hotels over the last 10 days.

In the latest incident on Monday, three robbers armed with daggers barged into a hotel in Stulang Laut at 5.25am and held up a security guard and a receptionist.

Malaysian Association of Hotels, Johor chapter chairman John Roozemond said hoteliers were concerned about the spate of robberies.

"This is bad for tourism. We must all we can to assure guests that it is absolutely safe to stay in our hotels,” he said.

27 foreign women held in 3 JB anti-vice raids

JOHOR BARU: Police rounded up 27 foreign women in three anti-vice raids in the city here.

Johor Baru (South) police chief ACP Roslan Ahmad said the 25 Indonesian and two Thai women, aged between 20 and 31, entered the country on social visit passes but got involved in prostitution.

He said investigations showed a syndicate was responsible in bringing them into the country.

In the first raid in Taman Pelangi at 12.10am, police arrested five Indonesians and two Thai women while in follow-up raids in Taman Sentosa and Taman Pelangi, another 20 Indonesian women were detained.

Roslan said the women were kept in three houses which served as a pick-up points for customers.

Since January, 303 women from 11 countries and 62 locals have been arrested for involvement in vice-activities.

The women came from Indonesia (104), Thailand (51), China (41), the Philippines (29), Sri Lankan (10), Cambodia (10), India (10) and one each from Bangladesh, Mongolia and Singapore.

Roslan said most of the women had been deported.

More policemen for Johor

JOHOR BARU: Bukit Aman will deploy more policemen to Johor, in line with the development of the RM15 billion South Johor Corridor project.

Police Administration Director Datuk Mohd Amir Sulaiman said the Royal Malaysian Police will go on a recruitment drive.

With the five-year development of SJC, Bukit Aman will gradually add more policemen in Johor.

"This issue was discussed at Bukit Aman and we have basically agreed to place more manpower here," he said.

Amir said besides the gradual increase of manpower, Bukit Aman has added 170 units of patrol vehicles and 100 patrol personnel to Johor.

"Bukit Aman will also include close circuit television cameras, control centres and upgrading and building of district police stations."

Amir said the recently introduced RakanCop programme in Johor has been effective in fighting crime, with response time between 10 to 15 minutes after an SMS report is sent by the public.

Prostitute from China made ‘RM11,000 in 3 weeks’

JOHOR BARU: A Chinese national suspected of being a prostitute claimed she earned RM11,000 in 3 weeks.

The 20-year-old woman said this to Immigration officers who nabbed her and five Chinese women, aged between 21 and 32, at a four-star hotel here.

The woman said she had been in the country for the past three weeks and was paid between RM160 and RM200 for each client.

The women are being held at the Pekan Nenas Immigration Detention Centre. Four of them had entered the country on social visit passes while the other two could not produce travel documents.

The raiding party of 14 officers, headed by deputy assistant director Anuar Zainal, seized RM11,000, 8,006 yuan (RM3,700), other foreign currencies, condoms and lubricants.

The department’s deputy director (enforcement), Osman Omar, said: "The officers also recorded a statement from a local man, believed to be a client of one of the women." He added that the man was released after his statement was recorded.

The four women who violated their social visit passes will be charged under Section 39(B) of the Immigration Act 1963, while the other two will be charged under Section 6(3) of the same Act for not producing their travel documents.

I don't recall any decent hotel with hourly charge or short time usage. There are some shop lot turned hotel in Permas that offered this service. Not sure the price but I can check it out if you really need to. It's a little off town center and not convenient for Sporean to travel to. Kind of messy place at night.

My understanding is that BW Hotel Building Management had rejected the proposal for a pool by BW Spa Management. Reasons being the floor cannot take the addition load. So we have to bear this place for no pool facilities. I give this HC a miss liao until the proper footpath from the JB immigration is ready.

It makes no sense for me to pay for a taxi that cost me RM6.00 and it takes me more than 10 minutes to reach there, while if I walk across the railway track, it takes me only less than 10 minutes without addition fee. Save RM 12.00 and time lor ......................................... hehehe.

Crackdown on JB cyber cafes

JOHOR BARU : There are hundreds of cyber cafes here and only four are operating legally.

The Majlis Bandaraya Johor Baru (MBJB) said it could not act on the illegal operators until there was a public complaint.

According to MBJB, the four cafes have the required business registration permits and cyber cafe licences (issued by MBJB).

Mayor Datuk Abdul Latiff Yusof said that MBJB was serious in tackling the problem of illegal cyber cafes.

“We will take action against those premises if the public reports or complains to us,” he said after the council full meeting on Thursday.

The operators of the illegal centres would be slapped with a RM250 compound or taken to court where they face a six-month jail term or RM2,000 fine.

Abdul Latiff said there was the possibility that the illegal centres were using other permits such as the entertainment or restaurant licences.

MBJB had introduced a system of deducting points each time a cyber cafe fails to comply with regulations set by the council.

The regulations include prohibition in the use of tinted glass at the premises and not admitting those in school uniforms.

“The points will be deducted based on the seriousness of the offence.

“We will not hesitate to suspend or terminate the licences of cyber cafe operators if they keep repeating the offence,” said Abdul Latiff.

Abdul Latiff said the council was more focused on the welfare of the students.

“Certain aspects such as playing cyber games in the cafes is not under our jurisdiction.

“However, over the years we have been working closely with a number of ministries and agencies to tackle such problems,” he said.

JOHOR BARU: Prostitution centres in the city are opening their doors as early as 10am, moving away from their traditional operating hours in the evenings and late nights.

Police uncovered this new modus operandi when they launched several operations in the morning and nabbed dozens of prostitutes from Indonesia and Thailand under Ops Bersih with the intention of “cleaning up” the town centre for the coming festive season.

Johor Baru (South) OCPD Asst Comm Roslan Ahmad said in the latest raid, police targeted five hotels in Jalan Wong Ah Fook, Jalan Tun Abdul Razak and Jalan Meldrum and nabbed 49 prostitutes aged between 20 and 30.

“These women charged their clients between RM50 and RM400 to provide sexual favours,” he said, adding that police also detained several men believed to be customers and seized about 181 condoms.

“We hope to get more information from the public to enable us to launch more such operations,” ACP Roslan said, adding that there were 45 hotels operating in the city alone.

Meanwhile, police also seized about 738 pirated compact discs in a series of raids along Jalan Wong Ah Fook.

“We detained three suspects in these operations,” he said, adding that police also detained five suspects, believed to be drug addicts.

ACP Roslan said police were currently mounting more operations around the causeway, Jalan Wong Ah Fook and the surrounding areas to bring down the crime rates.

“We stationed some 46 men at 12 different checkpoints daily since Sept 25.

“So far, the number of snatch theft cases had gone down significantly,” he said, adding that he hoped police present at these places would help allay the public fear and give a good image to the city.

S'pore businessman slashed to death in JB

JOHOR BARU : A Singaporean businessman was slashed to death outside his rented home in Taman Permas Jaya after he got home from an entertainment outlet.

Teo Wan Kah, 28, and his girlfriend had just arrived at his rented home at 4.30am Wednesday when a car pulled up behind them.

Two men wearing ski masks alighted and rushed towards Teo, armed with parangs. Upon seeing the men, Teo and his girlfriend fled in opposite directions.

After 15 minutes, the woman turned to look for Teo and found him unconscious some 50m from the house. The assailants had fled the scene.

Teo was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Hospital Sultanah Aminah Hospital. He died from multiple slash wounds on his body and head.

Johor Baru (South) OCPD Asst Comm Shafie Ismail said the case was being investigated under Section 302 for murder.

Police bust notorious Sentosa Boy Gang from JB

JOHOR BARU : The Sentosa Boy Gang, notorious for stealing motorcycles and snatch thefts, was busted by police.

The gang had been active in several housing estates including Taman Pelangi, Taman Sentosa, Century Garden, Melodies Garden and Taman Kebun Teh.

Eight gang members in their 20s and 30s, including their 23-year-old leader known as Sentosa Boy, were rounded up from several areas including Taman Suria, Bakar Batu and Kg +++ Siak on Tuesday.

"Police have linked the robbers to more than a hundred cases and we believe there may be more," Johor Baru South police chief assistant commissioner Shafie Ismail said yesterday.

He said the gang leader was the first to be arrested at his home after he had committed an armed robbery.

"The arrest led to the capture of his accomplices," he said.

Shafie said the gang would go around on their stolen motorbikes looking for women to snatch their bags.

Police recovered five motorbikes, 12 mobile phones and a leather bag with jewellery.

He urged robbery and snatch theft victims to call the central police station at 07-2232222 to assist police in identifying the suspects.

The enforcers seized 1,000 bottles of adulterated liquor that can fetch about RM50,000 for the producer from the house in the noon raid on Wednesday.

A 25-year-old man, believed to be involved in the illegal brewing, was arrested, and brewing equipment seized.

The ministry’s investigations unit director Rosley Abdullahz said the liquor, easily passed off as genuine, was being sold at entertainment outlets.

The unit had started to trace the nightclubs and pubs that had bought the cheap liquor, Rosley said, adding that the man had used the rented house as a brewery and store for about three months.

He said investigations showed that the suspect had been arrested and released on bail for committing a similar offence last year.

Singapore motorists just have to ‘touch’ to enter JB

JOHOR BARU : Special gantries and electronic payment equipment have been installed at both the Causeway and Second Link to collect the RM20 levy on Singaporean vehicles entering Malaysia beginning next month.

A senior Immigration officer in Putrajaya told the New Straits Times that the gantries and stored-value card reader[/s using the same principle as the Touch ’n Go cards have been installed to make it easier for Singaporean motorists.

Checks by the NST at both entry points yesterday revealed trial runs for the equipment had been conducted over the past few days.

Customs and Immigration officers at both entry points have also begun verbally notifying Singaporean motorists of the move.

"We have installed the equipment but the exact date the levy will come into force has not been decided yet. The Transport Ministry will announce it soon," said the senior Immigration officer.

However, a Singaporean motorist who contacted the NST office here said Customs officers at the Second Link had told her the levy would be charged beginning Thursday.

"I was taken aback because there has been no announcement. This is going to affect regular travellers to Malaysia, like myself," she said.

Singapore currently imposes a S$20 (about RM46) entry permit fee on Malaysian cars and S$4 (RM9) fee on motorcycles entering the republic from 2am to 5pm on weekdays. No fees are levied on weekends and public holidays.

The levy proposal was first mooted by the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry last April to defray fuel subsidies lost to foreign vehicles.

The proposal has seen some reservations from various quarters, especially retailers, who believe that Singaporeans may be put off from coming to Malaysia.

State executive councillor Freddy Long, who heads the tourism portfolio, said he feared the levy would affect the tourism industry in Johor.

Singaporeans spend an average of RM5 million a day on food, shopping and entertainment in Johor. Most hoteliers, retailers and restaurant operators are heavily dependent on their patronage.

In Singapore, Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the levy was inconsequential compared to the fuel subsidies and other benefits Singaporeans enjoyed in Malaysia.

He said the levy would not deter Singaporeans from entering the country.

Girls gang-raped by boyfriends and friends

KOTA TINGGI: Two 15-year-old girls were gang raped by their boyfriends and friends in two separate cases last week.

Kota Tinggi acting OCPD Deputy Supt Muhammad Shamsuddin said, in both cases, the girls had followed their respective boyfriend's home..

DSP Muhammad said that in the first case on Jan 23, the victim met up with her boyfriend at 6pm after sports practice in school.

He said she than followed the boyfriend to his house where they had sex.

“Her boyfriend, 15, later asked her to sleep with two of his friends as well to settle his debts.

“She was then raped repeatedly by the two, who were aged 15 and 17. She was later sent home at 8.45pm. She, however, only lodged a police report on Jan 26,” he added.

Police detained all three boys the same day.

DSP Muhammad said the second incident happened on Jan 25.

“The victim met up with her boyfriend in his 20s at Plaza Kota Tinggi. She then followed him home to his house in Kampung Lukut Cina, where she claimed he raped her three times.

“After that, two of the suspect’s friends took turns to rape her before sending her home at 1am,'' he added

Ministers clueless on foreign vehicle levy

No one seems to know when or even who should be collecting money

IT'S all systems go - apparently - to begin charging Singapore vehicles RM20 (S$9) to enter Malaysia but top officials still seem to be uncertain when or even who would be collecting the money.

No one was able to say when the green light would be given to begin charging the levy either, according to a report yesterday.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy deflected questions about the system to the Immigration Department.

At a separate function, Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad, whose portfolio includes immigration, referred such questions back to to the Transport Minister, the New Straits Times reported.

'We are waiting for them as they are implementing it,' both men said.

This was their response to queries on the levy on foreign vehicles entering Malaysia and how the system would be implemented.

Datuk Seri Chan said the amendments to the law to impose the levy had been made and it was now up to the implementing agency, the Immigration Department, to execute it.

Asked if it was true that the gantries had already been put up and were ready for use, he said the Ministry had no clue about this and said the question should be forwarded to the Immigration Department.

'Although the ministry is involved in this project, Immigration is going to implement it,' he said adding that the Cabinet had not decided on the method of payment.

Electronic equipment has been installed at both the Causeway and Second Link, according to Deputy Home Affairs Minister Datuk Tan Chai Ho.

It was also reported earlier this week that trial runs for the equipment had already been conducted and the report quoted unnamed motorists as saying that they had been told the levy could be imposed as of yesterday.

But Datuk Seri Radzi said that his officers would be tasked with collecting the levy only when it came into effect.

'I thought it is all to be done by the Transport Ministry,' he said.

'Immigration officers at checkpoints will only be checking the necessary documents and collect the money,' he added.

When asked to clarify the confusion surrounding the use of gantries and smart card readers at entry points like the Johor Baru Causeway, the Home Affairs Minister was unable to do so.

'The money is not even for Immigration and since we are collecting it on behalf of the Transport Ministry, it is in charge of the implementation,' he said.

Asked if the payment system was similar to the one employed by Singapore, Datuk Seri Radzi said he could not comment as well.

Singapore imposes a S$20 fee on Malaysian cars entering the republic on weekdays. It allows free entry for 10 days in a year. The fee for motorcycles is S$4.

'I will find out what is happening...and whether it is us or the Transport Ministry that is supposed to be giving the green light, although I think it is them,' said Datuk Seri Radzi.

'But for now, we have not started collecting money and there is no decision if the collection will be done using the gantry system or manually.'

Johor projects to get international touch

JOHOR BARU : One of the world’s leading project master planners, the London-based Atkins Group, has been roped in to turn Johor Baru into an international city.

It will have a re-look at the development blueprint for the Johor Baru urban and waterfront development.

Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said the Atkins team had been tasked with giving the projects an international flavour.

He said this was in line with plans to transform greater Johor Baru — which is an integral part of the Iskandar Development Region — into a regional growth centre for business, pleasure and living.

It is learnt that a high-powered delegation from the company was here recently on a preliminary fact-finding mission, which included an aerial survey for a grasp of the region’s strength and opportunities.

The Atkins Group has an impressive list of top global clients.

In the Middle East, it was the master planner and engineer for the US$1 billion (RM3.5 billion) Durrat island resort development in Bahrain.

It was responsible for the design of the world’s tallest residential tower in Dubai in 2004, and a host of other exciting projects in Libya, China and Europe.

Ghani said the re-look by the Atkins Group would also encompass the central business district here, which has also been earmarked for major transformation and development.

"The idea is to reinforce the existing design and master plan to give it an international dimension, with a view to making Johor Baru an international city."

He was speaking after a briefing for some 300 businessmen representing the Johor Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry here yesterday.

Also present was MCA vice-president Datuk Dr Chua Soi Lek, who is also Minister of Health.

The briefing was arranged to give Chinese entrepreneurs an insight into the shape of things to come in Iskandar and opportunities arising in business and investments.

Ghani said that just as Chinese pioneers like Wong Ah Fook played a leading role in the opening of Johor Baru more than a century ago, the community now should seize the opportunity to stamp its mark in Iskandar.

"If you have money to invest and have creative new development ideas, then come to Iskandar.

"There is no need to go anywhere else. There are plenty of opportunities to seize and explore here."

Ghani also said that Johor-based businessmen would not be displaced by "big players" from Kuala Lumpur in competition for investment opportunities in the region.

He said they would be given the "first bite at the cherry" as they were based here and familiar with local business and investment conditions.

"But don’t wait too long or you will lose out on opportunities," he added.

Dr Chua pointed out that all races stood to benefit from the multi-disciplinary development model of the Iskandar region.

"This assurance comes from no less than Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi himself. He has told the Cabinet that no race should be left out of economic benefits arising out of this massive development in south Johor."

"We will ensure everyone benefits," he said, adding that even small players would be given the opportunity to become stakeholders in the development.

Business prospects, he noted, were aplenty in both upstream and downstream, especially in such diverse sectors as logistics, manufacturing, real estate development and services.

Dr Chua said there would be full disclosure of all opportunities for investment and business through the soon-to-be-announced Iskandar Development Authority.

The Iskandar region will encompass 2,217 sq km of land, making it one of the single largest integrated developments in the country.

Being touted as the most ambitious development project in the region, it is expected to create some 800,000 jobs over 20 years.

It is projected to generate an average growth rate of eight per cent for Johor.

When fully developed, Iskandar will span an area nearly three times the size of Singapore.

Prostitutes give police the slip with new tactics
12 Feb 2007

JOHOR BARU: Prostitutes in Skudai, Pulai and Kulai were operating in smaller groups and using private homes to avoid detection.

This was discovered by police when they came out empty-handed after raids in popular red light areas and budget hotels.

They are now concentrating on high-rise apartments and houses.

Johor Baru (north) police chief assistant commissioner Ruslan Hassan said the flesh syndicates now managed small groups of prostitutes, mostly foreigners, to avoid suspicion.

"They also operate from apartments so that people would not realise the number of guests visiting a particular unit."

Ruslan said police had arrested 44 people this year, including 28 foreign women suspected to be prostitutes and local men who were suspected syndicate members.

Out of the 28 women, 15 were Thai nationals, 11 Indonesians and two Chinese nationals and all were aged between 21 and 30.

Police made 10 raids last month, one at a budget hotel in Skudai, while the rest were at private properties that included apartments and shophouses.

Govt ‘should review levy’ on foreign cars entering Malaysia

JOHOR BARU : The government should review the decision to impose a RM20 levy on Singaporean vehicles entering Malaysia, Johor Baru MP Datuk Shahrir Samad said yesterday.

He said the rationale behind the move was to defray the government’s fuel subsidies lost to foreign vehicles.

"But since the fuel price has gone down, what are our reasons to collect the levy now?" he asked.

While a slash in fuel subsidies in March saved the government RM4.4 billion in annual subsidies — and pushed up petrol prices between 19 and 23 per cent — Malaysia still pays RM12 billion annually to keep fuel prices low.

The comparatively cheaper fuel prices have resulted in long queues formed by Singaporean and Thai vehicles daily at service stations in border towns like Johor, Kelantan, Kedah and Perlis.

The levy was mooted by the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry last April to defray fuel subsidies lost to foreign vehicles.

JOHOR BAHRU : Polis menahan 50 orang termasuk empat wanita kerana melakukan pelbagai kesalahan dalam serbuan di kawasan pembinaan Pusat Pentadbiran Baru Johor, Nusajaya, di sini awal pagi Sabtu lalu.

Ketua Polis Johor Bahru Utara, Asisten Komisioner Ruslan Hassan, berkata mereka yang berusia antara 20-an dan 40-an itu ditahan dalam satu operasi bersepadu membabitkan 224 anggota dan pegawai polis, Rela serta Jabatan Imigresen.

Beliau berkata, operasi berkenaan dilakukan untuk membanteras kawasan itu daripada menjadi tempat persembunyian penjenayah, perjudian dan sarang pelacuran.

"Dalam operasi selama lima jam berakhir jam 3 pagi, kami memeriksa 418 pekerja asing termasuk wanita dan kanak-kanak yang berada di kawasan pembinaan dan tinggal di rumah kongsi.

"Hasil pemeriksaan, polis menahan 50 orang berusia antara 20-an hingga 40-an termasuk empat wanita kerana melakukan pelbagai kesalahan di bawah Akta Imigresen," katanya di sini, Sabtu lalu.

Selain itu, Ruslan berkata, pemeriksaan di kawasan rumah kongsi di Nusajaya itu, pihaknya tidak menemui sebarang senjata atau alat perjudian.

"Bagaimanapun, kami akan meneruskan operasi di kawasan pembinaan dari semasa ke semasa bagi mengelak ia menjadi kawasan persembunyian penjenayah," katanya.

Akhbar sebelum ini melaporkan kawasan Nusajaya masih dalam pembinaan tetapi pekerja Indonesia di kawasan itu didakwa sudah menjalankan pelbagai aktiviti songsang seperti pelacuran serta perjudian, terutamanya pada waktu malam.

Perniagaan itu bagaimanapun hanya terbuka kepada mereka yang dikenali di kalangan pekerja kontrak seramai kira-kira 700 orang dan didakwa turut membabitkan pekerja tanpa permit.

Difahamkan, keadaan bertambah buruk sejak kira-kira empat bulan lalu apabila kebanyakan pekerja kontrak berkenaan yang tinggal di rumah kongsi mula membawa balik wanita.

Johor Baru MP Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad said the agents should brief the workers about Malaysian culture before they were brought in and told that dogs and cats were considered pets here.

"It might be normal for people from Vietnam or Myanmar to cook cats and dogs but this is definitely not accepted here," said Shahrir after hosting the closing ceremony of a forum at the National Productivity Council here.

He said pet lovers would be offended by the foreigners' ignorance.

Shahrir was commenting on the disappearance of many pets in Taman Kota Masai and Taman Seri Bahagia. Pet owners claimed foreign workers in the neighbourhood may have made meals of their animals.

Residents are keeping their pets off the street, as rumours have it that drug addicts are selling cats and dogs to foreign workers at RM5 per head.

Some owners claim to have found the skins of their pets discarded in rubbish bins.

Prostitutes on offer in fishing vessel

KUKUP : A floating brothel on the high seas. This was what marine police encountered in a midnight operation off Tanjung Piai here yesterday.

As they approached the fishing boat, three men jumped into the sea but were apprehended soon after.

The men aged between 38 and 46 years are believed to be the tekong and two pimps.

On boarding the vessel, the police team found 10 Indonesian women from Batam who were allegedly involved in vice.

Marine Police southern region chief ACP Kamal Bakri Medan said the 13 would be handed over to the Permas police for further investigations.

Police also seized the RM4,000 boat and a 40-horsepower outboard motor worth RM10,000.

The incident occurred after the police team led by Corporal Samsudin Rahmat was patrolling the waters off Tanjung Piai.

It is learnt that clients would have to pay the pimps US$100 (RM350) for the company of a woman for the night.

It is also learnt that the gang would be in the vicinity for a week or two before moving on to other locations off the coast. Kamal said this was the first incident involving vice on boats.

Meanwhile, a source said vice activities on the high seas had been thriving at Tanjung Piai, Pengerang and Teluk Ramunia.

Companies involved in shipping are believed to have been approached by syndicates wanting to use their vessels for prostitution.

"The syndicates would bring between five and 10 women, mostly Indonesians, and offer them to boat operators here," a source said.

State Harbour Master Kapt Hazman Hussein, when consaid, the authorities were not empowered to take any action against boat operators who allowed vice on their vessels.

JOHOR BARU : Residents in a housing area here are living in fear of a flasher who not only performed lewd acts in front of women and children but also left behind a "souvenir" for them.

Housewife Angel Pai, 30, said she got a shock when she heard her nine-year-old daughter screaming about 8pm on Thursday. Her daughter was feeding several dogs in their backyard at the time.

"I was in the living room and my daughter ran to me and told me that she saw a naked man touching his genitals at the gate in the backyard.

"The man had run off by the time I went outside. However, I found some slimy substance resembling semen at the gate," said a disgusted Pai, who reported the matter to the police.

Another resident, identified as Carolyn, said she saw a naked man in his 20s holding his genitals behind her kitchen two weeks ago.

"I sensed someone was looking at me when I was preparing dinner. When I looked out the window, I saw a man running away while clutching his clothes," she said.

Residents in the Permas Jaya area are now worried that the flasher would become bolder if he is not caught soon.

MCA Permas Jaya branch chief Tan Bee Lian urged police to step up patrols in the area.

She said there was a need to erect perimeter fencing in the housing estate as a crime prevention measure but the idea apparently was not well received by the local authorities.

"Perimeter fencing works well in many housing estates in other states to prevent burglary and thefts. I hope our local authorities will consider it for security’s sake," she said.

The victims also brought their complaints to the attention of Johor MCA Public Complaints Bureau deputy chairman Rodney Soon.

Soon said the culprit should be caught before he becomes more aggressive.

Facelift for JB under waterfront project

JOHOR BARU : A vibrant, exciting and colourful city offering cultural, musical and other entertainment shows, with world-class venues and facilities.

Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said this is what Johor Baru would be when the integrated waterfront project under the Iskandar Regional Development plan is completed in the next five years.

The city will have venues to host world-class shows and performances by big names in the world of entertainment.

A calendar of events is already being drawn up in association with internationally renowned event managers and promoters, who will aggressively market them to draw audiences from all over the region, said Ghani.

"Currently, every time there is an extended weekend public holiday, there is an exodus of people from Johor Baru to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong or other cities because there is nothing to do here.

"But this will be a thing of the past when the planned integrated waterfront developments in Iskandar come up, in the next three to five years, Ghani said when launching the annual Chap Goh Meh celebrations at Danga Bay.

Also present were MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting and Johor MCA chief Datuk Dr Chua Soi Lek.

The festivities started with a performance by the six-member girl group, Ironic Band, followed by a 40- minute show by the Shanghai Acrobatic Troupe.

The VIPs later took part in the tossing of yee sang — the traditional raw fish salad served during Chinese New Year for abundance, prosperity and vigour in the coming year. The highlight of the celebrations was a 10-minute fireworks display.

Under the Iskandar, the entire five-kilometre stretch of the Johor Baru waterfront is to be developed into a new urban centre featuring upmarket hotels, an exhibition and convention centre, high-rise commercial offices, upmarket condominiums and open spaces for stage shows and entertainment.

It is expected to draw investors from around the world, especially the Middle East and Singapore.

Danga Bay is the front-runner of this multi-billion ringgit development. About RM500 million has been spent since 2000 to bring life to this part of town.

It is now the scene of cultural and entertainment shows on weekends.

Supplier brought me and my colleague to this very grant looking KTV on Sunday night. Basically right after our arrival and dinner.

The daily reported that the spirit, known as Chew Shi Feng, met Loo at night.

Nanyang Siang Pau reported that Loo's situation became worse recently when he was about to wed a Vietnamese woman.

His intention was believed to have upset Chew who felt she should be given “first wife” status.

A two-hour "wedding" was then held with more than 300 relatives and friends attending the event.

Even a drizzle failed to disperse the crowd as Loo's friends burnt paper paraphernalia like a house and jewellery by the roadside.

A makeshift hut made of canvas was built at the site for the spirit "bride" to put on her "make-up."

The bridegroom then went into the house for a few minutes’ talk before driving home with a stone tablet bearing his "wife's" name.

39 detained in JB dangdut raid

PUTRAJAYA : The restaurant looked innocent enough from the outside. But at the back of the premises was a pleasure den for Indonesian illegal migrants, who came each night for dangdut and snooker.

The Immigration Department raided Restoran Waja and Pusat Snooker Waja in Taman Pandan, Johor Baru, yesterday, sweeping up 38 illegals and arresting the Indonesian owner of the joint who is also a Malaysian permanent residence holder.

Immigration enforcement head Datuk Ishak Mohamed said city and town councils should exercise more caution when issuing business licenses to foreigners and PR holders.

"There’s nothing wrong with PR holders owning a business here but the local authorities should monitor closely to ensure they are not providing a hangout for illegal immigrants," Ishak said.

The raid was conducted from midnight to 3am by a team of 20 officers from the department in Johor Baru.

Immigration officers moved in on the premises following a tip-off and public complaints about the din from the snooker parlour and loud dangdut music which irritated neighbours from midnight to 6am daily.

Of the 38 patrons arrested, 10 had no documents while the rest had overstayed their social visit passes.

They were all adults of whom 24 were men and 14 women.

Ishak said the department would recommend to the city council that it revoke the business licence of the Indonesian owner.

In Johor Baru, City Council spokesman Lokeman Sulaiman said there were thousands of business premises here and the authority has only about 100 enforcement officers to do checks.

He also said before year-end, the council would do routine checks on the premises before the licence holders could renew their licences.

Besides that, the enforcement officers also do random checks based on public tip-offs.

"But there is simply too many shoplots here.

"How do you expect us to monitor every single one with only 100 enforcement officers?" he asked when commenting on the raid carried out by the Immigration Department early yesterday morning.

Flashing red light on JB vice

JOHOR BARU : It will take some doing, but authorities here are hell-bent on ridding the city of vice activities.

They have started with Jalan Wong Ah Fook, which is a favourite haunt of Singaporeans looking for sleazy entertainment.

The street is famous for its budget hotels which are used by prostitutes to service clients and hair salons which cater strictly to male customers.

Jalan Wong Ah Fook and surrounding areas have just undergone a RM7.6 million facelift.

The streets have been widened, the Segget River has been covered and beautification projects have been put in place.

Closed-circuit television cameras have been installed on certain stretches of the road to ensure safety of tourists and locals.

There is a covered pedestrian walk along the pre-war buildings called the "Segget Walk". Behind those buildings is the "Meldrum Boulevard", which has restaurants and cafes.

But despite all this, the authorities are still trying to rid the street of its "red-light district" status.

"It’s a long battle, but we are making progress," said the city council public relations officer Lokman Sulaiman.

"Currently, there are at least three raids conducted by various government agencies a week."

The problem the council is facing is that they cannot revoke the operating licence of these places as the owners are not breaking the law.

"It is the individuals who use these premises. The owner is not going to chase them away for renting a room," he said.

But the council and police are undeterred.

"We will make it difficult for these people. We will continue with the clean-up operations.

The second phase of the state government’s beautification programme of the city centre is scheduled to start soon and Jalan Wong Ah Fook has been targeted again.

"The second phase will see more beautifying and upgrading projects, with more facilities being built for city folk," Lokman said.

It will extend from Jalan Wong Ah Fook to the Tropical Inn in Jalan Gereja, a stretch which covers almost five kilometres.

"Funds for the project have been approved under the Ninth Malaysian Plan," he added.

Hot dogs bust JB's DVD/VCD pirates

JOHOR BARU: Two dogs used their noses to make the biggest pirated optical discs bust of the year on their very first official assignment in Malaysia.

Lucky and Flo sniffed out RM10 million in fake optical discs at a shopping complex here yesterday.

The outing was a resounding endorsement of the decision to bring the Labrador Retrievers here from Northern Ireland to put pirated optical disc operators out of business.

It saw the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry making a RM10 million haul in fake discs meant for export to Singapore, Britain, Hong Kong and Japan.

The dogs smelt something amiss the minute they were brought into the car park of the Holiday Plaza which had been under surveillance for two months.

Seconds later, the first canines in the world trained to sniff out optical discs in hidden compartments or shipments, started chasing a car being driven out of the parking lot.

And they were spot on — officers found thousands of pirated DVDs and VCDs in the boot ready for shipment out of the country.

The driver and his passenger then led the raiding party to 11 shoplots on three floors of the building where the full extent of the syndicate’s operations was uncovered.

Johor enforcement chief Fahmi Kassim said the bust had revealed a full-fledged operation where a syndicate took orders, manufactured, packaged and exported pirated discs.

Describing the operation codenamed "Ops Eagle" as one aimed at putting the key operators out of business, he said the time spent monitoring the syndicate had paid off.

He said the syndicate was so active worldwide that orders kept pouring in over the computer and fax machines even as the raid was under way.

Fahmi, who led a 30-man enforcement team seized more than one million discs, 20 computers, 12 CD burners and fax machines.

"It was an elaborate set-up, probably one of the biggest syndicates operating in the country," he said.

The syndicate had six storage centres located on three floors. Investigations also showed that the syndicate could produce at least 5,000 discs a day. The officers are now trying to ascertain the daily trading volume.

The ministry brought in the dogs with the assistance of the Motion Picture Association (MPA).

They are being put up at the six-star Animal Hotel in Sepang.

Dogs sniff out RM10mil in discs

JOHOR BARU : Compact disc-sniffing dogs Lucky and Flo, who had been flown into Malaysia just a week ago, scored their first major success yesterday when they led enforcement officers to a cache of one million pirated optical discs worth RM10mil.

The discs were seized in a raid on an office tower block by state Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry enforcement officers.

Enforcement director Fahmi Kassim said six men, aged between 20 and 30, were detained during the 12pm raid. One of them is a Vietnamese.

This is the first raid in which the dogs were used and they sniffed out the polycarbonate used in making the discs, said Neil Gane, an official of the Motion Picture Association.

“Lucky and Flo were able to sniff under the doors – all the doors were locked and many of them had metal grilles,” Gane told Reuters. “If the dogs smelt polycarbonate, they would sit down and the officials would then force open the doors.”

Fahmi said two of the suspects tried to flee in separate cars but were caught.

“We detained three other suspects in the office of the syndicate while another was detained at the ground floor,” he said.

“The sixth to the 10th floor of the tower block was used to store the pirated VCDs and DVDs.

“We also seized 12 computers used to recopy or ‘burn’ the discs,” he said, adding that most of the discs were for video games.

It is believed that the discs are meant for export to neighbouring countries.

Fahmi said his officers discovered the hidden compartments after noticing something odd about the racks in the rooms.

“After destroying the racks, we discovered a big room filled with the pirated discs.

“We have not ruled out the possibility of a foreign syndicate,” he said.

Disc pirates put out contract on dogs

KUALA LUMPUR : The two sniffer dogs instrumental in the seizure of fake optical discs worth RM10 million now carry a price on their heads.

It is learnt that an undisclosed bounty has been put up by syndicate bosses.

"Following the successful raid at a shopping complex in Johor Baru on Tuesday, sources informed the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs that syndicate members are looking for the dogs," the ministry’s enforcement assistant director, Firdaus Zakaria, said yesterday.

"The dogs are a genuine threat to the pirated disc syndicates, thus the instruction to eliminate them."

The ministry has stepped up security for the canines, Lucky and Flo. They have also been moved to different safe houses.

The raid by the ministry’s officers netted more than one million fake discs, 20 computers, 12 CD burners and fax machines. The discs were intended for Singapore, Britain, Hong Kong and Japan.

The dogs, trained to sniff out optical discs, were taken to a car park of a building which had been under surveillance for two months.

Shortly after, one of them started chasing a car being driven out, and thousands of pirated DVDs and VCDs were found in the boot of the vehicle.

The driver and passenger of the car led the raiding party to the shopping complex on the third floor.

Lucky and Flo, both Labrador Retrievers, were brought into the country by the ministry with the assistance of the Motion Picture Association of Malaysia.

They are the first dogs to be trained to sniff out optical discs as their noses are sensitive to polycarbonate, one of the main ingredients in the manufacture of the discs.

This was the pair’s first major assignment in the country.

Lucky and Flo are not the first dogs to have attracted a bounty.

In 2004, a drug cartel in Colombia placed a US$10,000 (RM35,000) price on the head of a golden Labrador Retriever named Agata, one of Colombia’s best drug-sniffing dogs.

She began her career in 2003 and has since helped track down 300kg of cocaine and 20kg of heroin.

JOHOR BARU : Last Tuesday’s RM10mil seizure of fake optical discs has failed to stop the syndicates.

Within 24 hours, they were back in business with their 20-odd stalls at a shopping complex here. ( Holiday Plaza )

In fact, the syndicates are believed to have even invested in a “special chemical spray” to confuse the dogs which sniffed a cache of one million fake optical discs stored in an office tower block at the complex.

In the raid, Labrador Retrievers Lucky and Flo were instrumental in leading enforcement officers to the discs.

It is learnt that the syndicates have also changed their tactics by using pushcarts and trolleys for easy escape.

Besides that, they have carried out extensions to the stalls by setting up secret rooms, installing remote-controlled doors and additional closed-circuit television cameras.

This is an act of defiance, said state Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Department enforcement chief Fahmi Kassim of the syndicates’ ability to operate a day after the “massive seizure.”

“We will wage an all-out war against piracy all over the state, especially in Jalan Wong Ah Fook and the complex,” he said.

State Unity, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs chairman Datuk K.S Balakrishnan expressed shock when told that the outlets were back in business.

“Unlike other shopping outlets in the state where we can direct the management to prevent such businesses, the outlets at this complex have been sold to individual owners,” he said.

Skudai traffic at a crawl

JOHOR BARU : Thousands of commuters presently using Jalan Skudai to get to town will have to endure massive traffic crawls near the Perling Bridge as the project is only expected to be completed in 17 months.

State Public Works and Housing Committee chairman Datuk Baderi Dasuki appealed to the public to be patient as the project, which started in February last year, was progressing on schedule.

He said traffic police had been directed to be stationed at the location between 6.45am and 8.30am to ensure smooth flow of traffic.

Works are underway at the location to build a RM174.4mil three-tier interchange to ease congestion at the Taman Perling flyover, which connects motorists coming from the city, the north and Pasir Gudang to the Second Link.

Besides the flyover, there will be a giant U-turn just before the Perling Toll for those coming from Pasir Gudang.

In addition, a special access road leading to Pekan Rabu will be constructed for travellers to stopover to do shopping.

However, the project has caused a lot of unhappiness among motorists as they are forced to endure daily traffic jams which stretch for kilometres especially during rush hour.

Some frustrated commuters have voiced their dissatisfaction and unhappiness through SMSes and letters in the newspapers.

A school van driver, Chok Chee Keong, 47, said that sometimes it takes up to an hour to get from the Perling Mall intersection to the Jalan Skudai road towards Johor Baru (which is approximately 1.3 km).

“It is getting increasingly difficult to get my passengers to school on time as there may be obstacles on the roads causing bottlenecks at certain points,” he said with frustration.

Chok hoped the construction of the interchange would be done as soon as possible to ease the traffic condition.

Bus driver Tan Teng Lai, 52, expressed his concerns over the horrible traffic condition and said he was worried the traffic congestion would worsen after Sept 1 when heavy vehicles start using the Second Link.

Pirates going to the dogs

JOHOR BARU : Digital versatile disc pirates here are running scared. They have lost millions to crippling raids and Lucky and Flo, two Labrador retrievers trained to sniff out optical discs.

Operators at the Holiday Plaza shopping mall, a notorious haven for the trade in illegal discs, are selling pirated DVDs for as low as RM2 per disc to clear them before they get confiscated.

During a raid on March 20 Lucky and Flo sniffed out RM10 million worth of discs in a hidden storeroom in one of the mall's shops. Fifteen of the 30-odd vendors in the mall had to close down.

The remaining dealers are only displaying a few legal titles on their shelves. Gone are the catalogues of pirated titles, and the shop assistants idle their time away watching television.

But when the New Straits Times asked if any pirated DVDs were available, we were told to come back in half-an-hour. A shop assistant made a call, and shortly a young man with a wheeled suitcase arrived.
The shutters of the shop were pulled down, and we could choose from a selection of pirated DVDs in the bag.

Holiday Plaza Owners' Association adviser Richard Ng said that only 10 per cent of the 400 shoplots in the mall had sold pirated DVDs but the raids and bad press had affected everyone's business, from parking services to food and beverage outlets.

The association represents 160 retailers in the mall.

State Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Department enforcement chief Fahmi Kassim said they were only doing their job, and were not targeting legitimate businesses.

JOHOR BARU : It was called Ops "Double Trouble" simply because it was the second time in less than a month that optical disc pirates here were sniffed out by two dogs.

Lucky and Flo found more than RM1 million of pirated discs hidden in secret compartments at the Holiday Plaza.

In a 3pm raid yesterday by about 30 Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs officers, the two Irish Labrador Retrievers uncovered caches of about 100,000DVDs in 11 shops at the shopping mall, notorious for being a pirates’ haven.

The discs were hidden behind shuttered shoplots after a crippling raid on March 20, in which the dogs traced over RM10 million worth in fake discs in the mall.
To hide from the prying eyes of the authorities stationed at the mall, signs saying that the shops were empty and were for rent had been pasted on the shutters. But the dogs’ sense of smell did not let the authorities down.

Johor Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs enforcement director Fahmi Kassim said the lower haul this time around was a sign that the raids were affecting the syndicates.

"We will continue to go after these people as they have tarnished the country’s name. Most of the buyers are Singaporeans," he said, adding that more shopping complexes here would be raided.

As a consequence of the two dogs’ effectiveness, Fahmi said the word was that syndicates had upped the bounty on the two dogs from RM10,000 to RM50,000. --- KatoeyNewsNetwork

Lucky, Flo sniff out RM1m goods

JOHOR BARU : Lucky and Flo have done it again – this time, the dogs sniffed out pirated goods worth more than RM1mil in an office tower and shopping complex here ( Holiday Plaza ).

The seizure included more than 100,000 pirated DVDs, software and PlayStation games and 526 counterfeit designer bags.

Pornographic material featuring underage girls were also seized in the four-hour raid.

However, the dogs' success came with a price. Over the last few days, several enforcement officers involved in the crackdown on piracy have had to face attacks from vengeful syndicates, furious that their businesses were now under threat.

State Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry chief enforcement officer Fahmi Kassim said that three weeks ago, two of his men were kicked and one had a pepper spray used on him while they were leaving a shopping complex well-known for selling pirated goods.

“My men had just finished work for the day when the attack occurred,” he said.

Other incidents included a Molotov cocktail being flung into the house compound of another enforcement officer last December and a ministry vehicle being rammed from behind after a successful raid in January.

Fahmi said he and his team refused to bow to increasing pressure and vowed that he would continue the fight against piracy.

“If they retaliate because we raid their premises, we will just reinforce our team even more,” he added.

He also said that “special” weekend operations included getting extra enforcement officers from all the districts in Johor, as weekends were the time when local and Singaporean customers came in droves.

Fahmi revealed that some officers were also armed with guns while every one of them had undergone self-defence training.

Fahmi said he had heard that the reward money for destroying Lucky and Flo had gone up from RM10,000 to RM50,000 each.

Motion Picture Association (MPA) Asia-Pacific senior director (Operations) Neil Gane said the MPA took the threats against Lucky and Flo very seriously.

“We always factor that into the operational plan to ensure the safety of the dogs as well as the safety of all our other investigators, whether two-legged or four-legged,” he said.

Lucky, Flo sniff through charcoal to a RM1m haul

KUALA LUMPUR : They thought bags of charcoal would throw Lucky and Flo off the scent.

The syndicate involved in optical discs piracy was sure it would work.

They had tried chemical sprays, plastic sheets and even soap, and all failed.

And, yesterday, even the charcoal did not work.

The two black Labrador Retrievers sniffed out yet another substantial cache of pirated discs worth about RM1 million.

The charcoal had been placed behind the closed shutters of shoplots at the Holiday Plaza in Johor Baru on Friday.

"The syndicate thought that the charcoal would absorb the scent of polycarbonate (the scent which the dogs are trained to sniff out in the discs)," a Motion Picture Association spokesman said.

"Obviously, that did not work."

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry enforcement officers, who conducted the raid at 3pm on Friday, also discovered about 5,000 child pornographic DVDs at one of the shoplots.

"It is understood that the child pornographic DVDs were mainly sold to Singaporeans although a portion of them was reserved for the local market," Johor enforcement director Fahmi Kassim said.

Checks revealed the "actresses" in the pornographic DVDs were mainly from Korea, Japan and Europe.

Following the raid yesterday, it is learnt that the syndicate bosses had ordered all their runners to spread around Johor Baru and locate the dogs.

The syndicates also increased the bounty on the canines to RM100,000.

Police, who have not been taking any chance since the syndicates first offered a bounty on the dogs, are keeping their kennels in a safe location.

Following the Friday raid, Fahmi personally escorted Lucky and Flo back to their kennel.

"We are happy with the successes against the syndicates, especially following several raids last month where RM10 million worth of pirated discs were seized," he said.

Hawker centre’s ‘sexy’ menu

KLUANG : A hawker centre here had been attracting the crowd of late, but it wasn’t the food that was packing them in.

Instead, the house specialty was something decidedly spicier — scantily-clad women dancing sexily on table tops.

The bikini-clad women had doubled business at the hawker centre ever since word got around about their free show.

It is learnt that a beer company was sponsoring the show, which had been going on for more than two months.

A video clip of the show is being widely circulated on mobile phones in the district.

In the five-minute video segment, a songstress wearing a black bra and short pants is shown singing and dancing in front of a group of men.

The singer, in her late 20s, later climbs on top of a table and starts shaking her head and body, attracting men to join her.

It is learnt that the performance was held from 10pm to midnight every Tuesday and Thursday.

A housewife, Mrs Chia, who recently visited the hawker centre with her husband and young children, aged between 8 and 12, said she was shocked to see such a show in a public place.

"It was all right in the beginning as the performers only sang. I started to feel uneasy when they came to the tables and started flirting with some of the male customers.

"My jaw dropped when they climbed onto the tables and started dancing.

"That’s when I left the place with my husband and children."

Following complaints from the public, police raided the hawker centre last Thursday.

Kluang district police chief ACP Mohamed Fawzi Arshad said a female performer was arrested during the raid.

More than 100 people had gathered at the hawker centre to watch the show when police arrived about 11pm.

Fawzi said police were investigating if the owner had applied for an entertainment permit from the district office.

JOHOR BARU : Singaporeans continue to flock to Malaysia to dine, shop and tour despite the grim picture of crimes here painted by the island republic’s media.

Tour buses continue to choke the Causeway during school and public holidays as Singaporeans brave traffic congestion to enter the country for package tours ranging from two to three days.

Statistics culled by the Malaysia Tourist Guides Council (MTGC) reveal up to 120 tour buses with 40 passengers each enter Johor via the Causeway and Second Link during the holidays.

Even during low season, there are at least 12 tour buses during the weekends.

MTGC president Jimmy Leong said the exodus of Singaporeans from the island during holidays showed they were not deterred by negative media reports about the country.
"It is common for them to ask us about certain criminal cases during tea break.

"However, all tourist guides have been trained to do damage control and explain to them that crimes occur everywhere and that the Malaysian police have stepped up patrols in tourist areas.

"They accept our explanation that Malaysia is still among the safest countries in Southeast Asia to travel."

Leong said those who joined package tours were safe as they were under the care of their tourist guides.

And those who did not take tour packages usually travelled in groups.

Singaporean clerk Cindy Lim, 25, said she came to Johor every fortnight to watch movies, eat seafood and shop at hypermarkets.

"I always come with my friends. It is relatively safe in Johor Baru as we only visit crowded places. Moreover, we save a lot by spending our money here."

Margaret Tan said she crossed the Causeway on public buses two times a week to shop for groceries.

She said that crime was never a worry in Johor Baru, which has more police than in city outskirts.

"If I am to worry about this and that, I might as well lock myself at home and starve to death."

A retired civil servant, who only wanted to be identified as Steven, said he always took extra precautions whenever he travelled to Johor.
