SINGAPORE — A convicted paedophile who preyed on 10 boys, aged 10 to 15, had his jail sentence increased from 12½ years to 21 years on Monday (Sept 4), after the Court of Appeal found that he had shown a “high degree of premeditation and exploitation”.
Compared with past cases of similar severity, Goh Jun Guan, 28, also got off lightly, argued prosecutors who had launched an appeal against his sentence, which included 15 strokes of caning.
From 2012 to 2014, Goh would often lurk around game shops in the western part of Singapore, offering to coach young players in Vanguard, a popular trading card game. In return, he demanded sexual favours from the young boys or nude photos of themselves.
When he was arrested, officers found 41 photos of male genitals and two photos depicting oral sex on his mobile phone. Goh, who was diagnosed with paedophilic disorder, had told investigators that he realised he was sexually attracted to young boys when he was 12, and found it difficult to stop thinking about them in a sexual way.
He was sentenced to 12½ years’ jail and 15 strokes of the cane in November last year for 30 charges, mainly for engaging in oral sex and obscene acts with a child.
On Monday (Sept 4), Second Solicitor-General Mavis Chionh argued that the punishment imposed on Goh was “manifestly inadequate”. The prosecution previously called for 21 years’ jail and 24 strokes of the cane to be imposed on Goh, saying that he had used friendships he forged over the card game for his sinister objectives.
Ms Chionh said the penalties the judge had imposed for Goh’s individual charges were “far too low”, when compared with past cases of a similar nature.
