Tuesday began normally.

A morning meeting over zoom where whoever was WFH joined in to give updates on whatever tasks they had to do.

It was a rather weird day for me as I was the only one from my department in the office, as both Shirlyn and Rebecca were both WFH, and Helen somehow had an external meeting. Only me, Joan and Cheryl were physically in the office.

After the meeting I went for a smoke, somehow, both Joan and Cheryl came out to join me. I didn't know that either smoked. Besides, we rarely had any conversations prior other than the usual Hi and Bye. Joan lit a stick. Cheryl just stood nearby second-hand smoking.

J: Hi Mark.

Me: Hello.

C: You must be happy.

Me: Huh?

J: Jasmine is coming back. You can finally be together.

Damn that Rebecca. Her mouth was really too big.

Me: Huh?

C: Don't need to hide la. Rebecca told us you are her lover and caused her divorce.

Me: Erm. That's not true.

J: Rebecca is HR leh. She will lie one meh?

Me: I'm just her friend. Really.

C: Sure or not?

I wondered the extent I should lie about it. But I had to do something.

Me: Rebecca also told us she saw you going into a hotel 81 with Ken.

C: Huh???

Me: Do you seriously think you can believe anything she says?

Cheryl suddenly became very uncomfortable.

C: Ya. Ok. You got a point.

J: Aiyah. I thought got some new gossip liao.

Me: It's not very nice to gossip about co-workers ok? And Joan, she's your marketing colleague, you feel good listening to the rumours and even spreading them?

J: Ok la. You are right I guess.

Me: Next Rebecca will say something like I slept with every girl in the office too! Like the guy before me.

I could see Cheryl blushing.

J: Wah. That one you also know ah.

Me: I listen to the rumours and gossip, but I don't go around spreading them.

J: But that one was real leh.

Me: Oh?

C: Joan. Shut up.

I decided to be a hypocrite. Perhaps it would help to divert some attention away from me.

Me: So that was real ah.

J: Ok la. I'll admit it wasn't the smartest thing I did. But he was really good in bed.

Cheryl stalked off and Joan lit another stick.

J: So you didn't sleep with Jasmine?

Me: Do you sleep with friends?

I used the classic technique of answering a question with another question.

J: No… that would be weird.

Me: Precisely.

J: Means you're damn boring then.

Perhaps it was time to drag Rebecca's name through the mud.

Me: Rebecca seemed to be interested in me. But I cannot.

J: Aiyah. That bitch is interested in anything with a dick.

Me: I kind of realised.

J: Oh well. At least Jasmine is coming back. I won't have to do all the work.

Me: Hello. I was doing some of that work with her too ok? And continued doing after she left.

J: Ya la. You good la. Everything also do.

Time to switch topic.

Me: Of course la! I was in the army for so long, this is my first real job, if I don't do, then I get a bad appraisal, then how?

J: Huh? I thought you quite rich one. Last time drive sports car all that.

Me: Oh. That wasn't my car. It was borrowed.

J: Chey. Act rich only.

Me: No la. Car more convenient mah. So ask my friend if can borrow lor.

J: Whatever la.

Me: Anyway I'm going to the hawker, you want coffee?

J: Teh C. Get one for Cheryl also.

Me: Ok.

J: I think I made her upset.

Me: Why leh?

J: You don't know meh? That guy before you. He took her virginity.

Me: Yeah I heard that, but like I said, I don't engage in the gossip.

J: Get the curry puff also. I'll pay.

Me: From level 1?

J: Ya. Just buy a whole box.

Me: Ok.

J: Sorry I said anything about Jasmine.

Me: It's ok. Just don't repeat it when she's back. I don't think she'll like it.

J: Yeah sure.

I stubbed out my stick and headed to the hawker centre.

Seemed like I managed to avert a mini crisis.

I returned shortly with the drinks and snacks. I passed Joan her tea and headed over to the finance room to find Cheryl.

Me: Hey.

She turned to look at me. Her eyes were red and a little puffy.

C: Yes?

Me: Teh and curry puff.

C: Please don't tell anyone about me or Ken.

Me: Erm. It's just gossip. You don't have to confirm it.

C: He's married.

Me: I know.

C: I don't know why I did it.

Me: Sometimes we all do things we cannot explain. Things we aren't proud of.

C: I can't stop.

Me: Can't stop seeing him?

C: We spent so much time together at work. And after that incident, he was always there for me to comfort me.

Me: Let's just not talk about it ok? What happens in your private time is none of anyone's business.

C: Thank you for understanding.

Me: No problem. Now eat the curry puffs before they're cold. I'm going back to my office.

C: Thank you.
