Communist Vietnam gets first taste of the Big Mac

Report from AFP dated 8 February 2014 :-

Communist Vietnam gets first taste of the Big Mac

HO CHI MINH CITY - Four decades after the Vietnam war ended, US fast-food giant McDonald's opened its first restaurant in the communist country Saturday, aiming to lure a rising middle class away from rice and noodles.

The arrival of one of the most potent symbols of US capitalism in southern Ho Chi Minh City -- known as Saigon when American troops dramatically withdrew in1975 -- is the result of a partnership with the son-in-law of Vietnam’s powerful Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

McDonald’s is following US rivals Burger King, KFC and coffee giant Starbucks into Vietnam -- a country many Americans associate more with an unpopular war than a newly wealthy middle class.

But with its 90 million-strong population and average per capita income of more than $1,500, "Vietnam is on the radar now" for US franchises, said Sean Ngo, managing director of consulting firm Vietnam Franchises Ltd.

Critics say that Vietnam’s rapid economic growth since "Doi Moi" reforms opened up the country in the early 1990s masks rising inequality and inefficiencies in an economy still dominated by state-owned enterprises.

But signs of the country’s rising affluence were on display Saturday as hundreds of people queued at the McDonald’s store on Ho Chi Minh City’s Dien Bien Phu street -- named after the battle that forced the French to withdraw from their former colony Vietnam.

Cannot blame these ppl. We had Mc, BK donkey years ago, we find them nothing special but to Viet or Khmer, these all new.... Given a choice I will rather eat proper local food than these junk food.

These countries are falling behind SG by yrs, maybe 10 yrs..... They are so excited that Hard Rock Cafe is opening in Cambodia... to us, HRC is antique... :D

BK opened in Singapore in 1982. HRC opened in Singapore in 1990.

On that basis, these countries are behind SG by 25-30 years.

Indochina wars
Vietnam was then divided into the communist-dominated north and the U.S.-supported south; war soon broke out between the two. North Vietnam won the war (the Vietnam War) despite heavy U.S. involvement, and the country was reunited in 1976.

Cambodia experienced its own civil war between communists and noncommunists during that period, which was won by the communist Khmer Rouge in 1975. After several years of horrifying atrocities under Pol Pot, the Vietnamese invaded in 1979 and installed a puppet government. Fighting between the Khmer Rouge and the Vietnamese continued throughout the 1980s;

Vietnam withdrew its troops by 1989. In 1993 UN-mediated elections established an interim government, and Cambodia's monarchy was reestablished

Well , can we safely say , we have at least 20 years to enjoy their good figure before it becomes washing boards like the ones in sg? That said , fast food has absolutely no nutrition whatsoever.

To me a ban mi is still better a better burger than most that you can find in sg.

on the other hand, Singapore still doesn't have Lotteria and the first Jollibee only opened last year :p

I have to say though, that the BK in HCM taste better than SG and gives bigger portions :D

not advisable...just use SGD in Vietnam...no point to lose once when you change SGD to USD and then lose again USD to VND...double exchange losses...this is unless you have existing USD currencies in hand...:)
