Liverpool are closing in on a move for Wigan midfielder Mohamed Diame on a free transfer, Goal.com can reveal.

The Senegalese star is out of contract at the end of the season and the Reds expect to hold talks in the next 10 days over a deal that would double his current salary to around £60,000-a-week.

Everton and Newcastle have also expressed an interest in the 24-year-old but Liverpool have raced into pole position as they look to bolster their midfield ahead of next season.

Reds manager Kenny Dalglish sees Diame as competition for Jay Spearing as a solid back-up to defensive midfielder Lucas, who has been out of action since suffering a serious knee ligament injury in November.

The Scot has spent in excess of £110 million since his return as manager last January but his budget for this summer will be limited to £30m and he is on the lookout for cost-effective signings.

Wigan have given up on trying to convince Diame to sign a new contract and Roberto Martinez admitted at the end of last week that all four of the Latics' out-of-contract players will be leaving the DW Stadium at the end of the season.

"There are four players out of contract and I expect them all to go - Hugo Rodallega, Momo Diame, Chris Kirkland and Steve Gohouri," the Wigan boss said on Friday.

The powerful French-born midfielder has been largely successful since his €3.8m (£3.1m) move from Rayo Vallecano in 2009 and has played 26 times this season.

Again, a second stringer who got his christmas present early. Double salary and a big RED player to boot. To me, money down the drain.

Why need this wigan player to compete with Spearing ? Why LFC need to spent millions to buy a player to compete with a incompetent spearing ???

Drop spearing totally to reserve team and save the money on Diame for a more classy midfielder !

The article says compete with Spearing to be the backup to Lucas. That's not a bad idea. Don't give up on Spearing please. I'm sure he will be good for us in future. He is the captain of the Youth FA cup winning team. He didn't play well in the FA Cup final but don't judge him too soon.

He didn't type wrongly. He meant it as sarcasm. Just like if I were to say, it's true that Dreams come true in the Theatre of Dreams. I'm dreaming of Monday Blues and this dream came through in the Threatre of Dreams.

If there is no classy player wants to come, so be it. No point buy these second third tier player. Instead, play Jonjo as the defensive midfielder, persuade kuyt to stay and play as midfileder like alonso. Both Kuyt and henderson are energetic players with great stamina. Kuyt provide the pass to carroll and suarez and henderson behind kuyt to mop up loose ball.

Then there is Jonjo, who is not shy of hard tackle,to break up opponent's play.

i think better save the money to give existing player and re jig the formation players.

Its time play promising youngster from the academy. Give more playing chance to that young boy Raheem Sterling on the left wing. He is fast with nibble feet.
Steward Downing, i find he is more effective on the right wing as i find him bringing the ball into the box more often, and his goals , comes when he plays on the right wing though he is left legged.

Kuyt, being a seasoned international player as a Holland striker and part time liverpool striker, will be astute enough to see openings for strikers as well as understand where the strikers will want the ball to be played to them; being a striker himself. So kuyt can play in midfield together with gerrard or as his cover.

In support of kuyt as a midfielder, A case in point would be ryan giggs. At 37 or 38, he is playing midfield and his past experience as a winger is guiding his vision of play and passes.
Whatmore kuyt is younger, nibble and tireless and can score goals ?

Its end of season now. A recap of Liverpool season is down to bad luck.Homeground low scoring, suarez 8 bans, carroll sings late, hit post 33 times. If those post hit were converted, we maybe opening champagne!

In next season before start of BPL and every game, better burn joss sticks and hell money to the goal posts, at least in Anfield.

Better Pray pray !

Good Luck and better show next season !
You'll Never Walk Alone ! See you in August !

To me get a good manager is the most priority

Simple cos if we can get a world known manager then alot of players will willingly play under him knowingly his capabilities of taking them into their next higher level

Think if manger Pep , Mourinhno manange the Red with their reputation they will have no problem of bringing world class player just like Rafa success in bringing Torres to Anfield

Anyway not to disrespect KK but somehow I had a feeling that he will be replaced but not dismissed him of cos instead resume him as a ambassador

You are still faithfully believe that liverpool are in this sorry state because of bad luck? Get real man.....i am in the opinion that we are too heavily depend on lone striker in our formation. Woodwork.....it's standard size throughout the world isnt it? Why others can score? Even QPR's defender can score .....

Makes me even more sad how even City have bridged the gap before Liverpool. Never in my life did I think I would see Chelsea and Man City win a premier League before us.
Who next? Maybe Newcastle? haha.

Yup, add City to Chelsea, another club with deeper pockets than us. Cheer but not too strongly, for City might be on 18 titles next time we say, Premier League champions.
