Actually there are loads of drivers around, from the moment you land in Batam. They will by touting their services to you. Booking a driver is almost always going to cost you more. Much cheaper to get roadside taxi and nego the price. Most places won't cost you more than 25k, except the first one that you take from the ferry terminal cause they got to pay in order to queue at the terminal. If you are taking taxi to go cewek hunting at joints, it's even possible to nego for no taxi fare as the driver almost all collect commission for your booking. Don't believe it if they say they don't receive commission. And if they don't want to waive the taxi fare, just move on. There are always are taxis around who will do so, as they will get to earn the commission from your cewek booking. And don't let them talk you into going for another hotel as the one you've booked is supposedly no good (according to drivers). For cewek bookings, I've been told by my cewek that the drivers received minimum 80k to, I've heard, 120k. Might have higher comm too. Depending on the driver's working relation with the joint, this commission sometimes is recurring. Means even if you return to book the same girl without the driver, he gets the commission too. And these drivers don't just receive commissions for cewek bookings, they get it from a lot others as well, such as hotels lah, massage centre lah, food lah. They are the leeches in Batam. Some drivers, just because they come recommended to you, are even more "daring" to fleece from you. Hence, it's not always a good thing if you have a "recommended driver".. I personally have downgraded from using a regular driver to just randomly hopping onto a roadside taxi or even ojet. Don't get it wrong. I don't hate taxi drivers. I just prefer to spend my money wisely.
