I think the commentator said Finnan injured his neck in the warm up? Thought I hear something like that. We need a target man badly. In the first half, when our midfielders got the ball, they have no target man in the penalty area to deliver the ball to. Bellamy is too short. Kuyt is forever everywhere but in the box. He's more of a midfielder than a striker.

Things only got better when Crouch came on. At least he harasses the central defenders into mistakes. Gerrard's left shot came after Crouch challenged for a ball.

We need to buy someone like Drogba... Hate to say that....

IMHO, even if Arbeloa has to be as RB & Riise in LB, then I'd still use Pennant in LW instead of the usually & totally ineffective Zenden!!!

You said "usually". I don't often rate Zenden too but I must admit he had a decent game on the left and even made a couple of runs. Rafa's tactic of playing old boys against their former clubs.

Fair play to Chelsea that they got the goal and kept us out of it. We didn't look like breaking them down. But I must say I'm disappointed that they were not more ambitious in the second half as the home team and sat back on the lead.

It's not target man per se that we need but how we play the strikers. Kuyt can of course be target man but Rafa wants him to get the ball deeper. It's the tactics. Of course it's true that if you have a winger system, then it's silly if you don't have a target man in the box for the crosses.

yes me too when i saw his name there i knew it would be problems for the defence becos J. Cole is very good at "gelek" here and there...and also he has always been Liverpool jinx...

Pool attacks were concentrated heavily on the left side of Chelsea half, so much so Gerrard had to drift towards the centre...prbly the absence of Finnan created this imbalance..also Riise did not seems to match up well with Zenden on the left...but i think one major problem was Liverpool build up was much too slow..by the time they pass the ball down to Chelsea defence area, their midfield has came back to support the defence...the Chelsea goal was a typical quick counter attack something which was suppose to be Liverpool specialty..

Really hope that the return match Liverpool can put in 2 clear goals...

The Jinx (Joe Cole) strike again.

The Reds now got nothing to lose since they are 1 nil down , i think they will be attacking like being possess . I still think than we can turn the table around at Anfield in 7days time.(remember Istanbu) Hopefully we can get it down in 90 mins.

It's a recurrence,he didn't pick up that neck injury in the warm up. We badly missed him, wish him speedy recovery.

To be fair, the only time we managed to beat them in a league game under Rafa was when they were without any 1st choice central defender. Our players have to perform at very high level in order to score one pass them, let alone two ? Of course we can still beat them, but it will be very very tough.

That's provided our strikers & midfielders dun misfire on 1 May.
We do have the advantage in that extra time (if played) will still be at Anfield ...

I dunno why but I'm not that worried after the lost cause somehow I know we will overturn it at Anfield...

If in the EPL, I'm not confident but in CL, I always have no doubts about the team...

Even when we play Barca, it never occur to me that we will get knock out... :D

not that i see them up but you have to admit that when we beat them in the premiership match back then, they were very much a weakened side...considering that the "Mouthrinho" even had to resort to fielding Essien as a central defender..i see a much tougher battle for Liverpool but of course I really hope we can come back from that one goal deficit..

We beat them before in the CL (no need to bring up the issue whether Garcia's goal crossed the line or not). We were a much weaker side then (Baros our only striker) and Chelsea had their big guns including Drogba, Cole, Robben. So this is not such a change in the situation as some have suggested.

I'm confident we will raise our game and create chances. The key is to score first and score early. ;)

The irony being that we still managed to keep a clean sheet at Stamford Bridge when we were weaker, but failed to score any and conceded one when we were better.
It will be an uphill task to overturn the one goal deficit as Chelski hardly conceded more than one goal when both Terry & Carvalho played & they also hardly slipped up when they played against us ( Before the 1st leg I was hoping they could be overcome by fatigues or got mentally jaded after fighting so hard at all fronts ,now I realize that I was being too wishful) .

To get an early goal,we need to repeat the sort of performance when we beat Juventus 2-1 two years ago. Again, anything can happen in football,
who will forget that six crazy minutes in Instanbul,or that moment of individual brilliance when Stevie scored that stunner against Olympiakos.
Go Mighty Reds !

Hosei leh .... Carvalho pie kar liao.
Better still, Carrick really proving that he's the hottest scoring midfielder in the EPL!!! :D
