INdonesians are filled with a lot of other tribal and mystic religions as well. They dwell in the arts, be it dark or white. However, they commonly use the term allah.

Many bataks are Christians. And many Javanese have their folk religion that uses spells and other arts for divination, medicine, and ceremonial purposes.

Those muslims that you see going around the entertainment areas during Ramadan and destroy the pubs and so on in the name of allah are no better than the patrons of these places during the normal days of non Ramadan.

Hmm...learned something today....thank you for explaining. The reason why i am curious is becos long time ago, during Suharto time, even Chinese papers, video tape and books are strictly not allowed into Indo...and am quite surprise that one could actually cook the entire pig up for a meal. Perhaps after the collapse of Suharto's dynasty, their laws not as strict as before.

.

After Habiebie stepped down, Gus Du the next President change the rules to allow Chinese new year celebration and allow Chinese characters to be put up.

Cooking of pigs are not exclusive to Chinese. Bataks also eat pigs and dogs..

In short Muslim laws are not that prevelant in Indonesia. They are rather liberal and nationalistic.

I think the reason prata is not cheap in batam because it's not a commonly available food in batam. therefore the price also not 'common'. unlike singapore, we can find at least one prata stall at each hawker. and it's like common breakfast food here..

in batam, i think the only prata restaurant i ever saw is the one in opposite of nagoya hill or nagoya plaza hotel. but i'm not sure if the one that you had or not.

In peniun market, there is another one. Kopitiam 456. below peniun hotel. There is this noodle store also that is dam good. A fat man cooking. Not the thin one direction beside. Although both are cooking noodles, and lots of people eating, I find the store with the fat man cooking to be better. And his speed in cooking is much faster than the other one.

Don't recall the name already since it's 3-4 years ago. Vaguely recall that it's after the 2nd bridge, on the right side, if you are going in the direction of from nagoya to barelang.

Only went there once. Visited the Kwan Im Temple and Vietnamese refuge camp. Loads of monkeys there too.

 oops.. that's the exactly one that i have been regular visiting. ha ha ha.. but so far it's fine for me. the reason that's my regular because i love their floating deck, the seaside dining, and their seafood is fresh, cheap and not overpriced. but cooking quality, i prefer rezeki's.

Soeharto's banning is the other kind of case. It has nothing to do with the halal food or pork. It's just that, he is so anti communism until he banned anything that has reference to mainland china especially on literature, writing, book, art, play, etc. this one goes back to 1960s when he overtaken the power and wiped all the communist. and unfortunately there was quite a large number chinese whose are in the communist party. there was propaganda that chineses are communist. a lot of dark side history was hidden there.

politic & history aside, things are progressing much better these days. not only chinese related ban were lifted, there are even mandarin news programme in local tv.

Yes, the wet market has a small coffeeshop. Next to the pork selling hall. It may be stuffy, n hot there. But the food is definitely good.

Not a good timing.
Ramadan begins on 28th.
On the first 3 days (28,29,30), not only all joints will be closed daytime (open at 7pm) as during the whole Ramadan, but also all joints and entertainment (pubs, KTVs, discoes) will be totally closed.
I would delay your trip at least 2 days.

Even with regular girl, also might not be able to boomboom. From sunrise to sunset have to treat them as invisible. :(

I had a christian contact but do not know if she's open during ramadan, like going out with me under the eyes of the public and eating together
