Distance from HCMC to Dai Nam is 32.3 km according to google maps.

Using Vinasun's standard rate of VND 11.000 flagfall for the first 0.7 km and VND 16.500 per km thereafter up to 30 km but we ignore the slightly cheaper rate after 30 km for simplicity (see table at bottom http://www.vinasuntaxi.com/taxi-7-cho), the meter fare should be:

VND 11.000 + (VND 16.500 x 31.6) = VND 532.400

This means that the fare of VND 500.000 that you paid is about right.

Maybe you should ask for volcano's lobang if he can get a driver to make this distance without the meter for cheaper.

As a foreigner, and never been to Dai Nam before, I can say that Mai Linh Taxi is reasonable to charge me 500kvnd. I didn't arrange anything and it is just street pickup.

well the original poster said he used a metered taxi for xyz, and u told him he was chopped, when in fact the cost was via the meter...what you really were referinf to was hiring a private car...so thats again not a apple to apple comparison...why not go further and say hire a bike as you seem to be the mr knowitall of saigon.

Da nang + hue
or

Da nang + hoi an

I would do the hai van pass and make a visit to the new intercontinental resort. You could pay for a pass to visit the resort, the pass has a voucer that you could spend on restaurants on the resort.

Yeah, that's right! But a foreigner who dunno the rate at all, difficult to nego with private vehicle.

The same apply to KTV/pub etc. Foreigners only know places that can be found on the internet that is generally more expensive than local joints :)
