I can't find anything wrong with the server which can easily handle 40,000 members plus guests at any one time.

I can only assume there was congestion at network level.

I'll investigate further.

Much appreciated boss.

How on earth a letter to the ST could affect network or server performance is beyond me.

Would you like to elaborate further so I can troubleshoot accordingly.

Hi boss, just let me clarify ... me no expert on computers or servers, etc.

When I read the forum letter this morning with suggestions for the monitoring of website postings due to generated negativities on recent SG happenings ....SMRT breakdowns, Ferrari crash, Hougang by-elections...sets my mind wondering if somewhere, somehow, someone is concerned about such postings on SBF and has already started some action along this line. I do encounter some difficulties assessing SBF in the last one week (prior to this, perfect!!!) ...I hope you understand what I mean.

If the above suggestions are technically not possible, then well and good, so pardon my ignorance and too imaginative mind. Do not mean to imply any question nor issue on your management of the forum, technically or otherwise.

You need big servers to host websites. This forum runs on a total of 6.

I would have assumed you are running them off a data centre and you don't own them physically? Are the servers running Windows?

Nobody is going to host a site from a server in their living room.:p

Of course the servers are in a datacenter. They require climate control, UPS, backup hard drives, earthquake and flood protection, backup power etc.

90% of all servers run Linux.

You have to contact m1 for the answer. I have no access to their network.

sam.. why dont you download the database and save it in your harddisk and then proceed to remove all those old data.. there are tons of them.. some dating afew years back.. those thread are either outdated or there is no new post anymore..

this way you could reduce the database size by at least half i reckon..

I download the database and save it on my hard drive. I then do the necessary housekeeping. However, by the time I upload it say 24 hours later, 4000 new posts will have been added and these will all be wiped out when I upload a day old copy of the database.

Housekeeping has to be done in real time and when it's done, it takes up server resources and the site will slow down. I try my best to do it all during non peak hours but those hours are getting shorter and shorter.

Unable to log in SBF about 1.30 pm yesterday. SBF Server not down. Surfing other sites OK. I am using Singtel - they may be up to some nonsense!! Still slower - on and off - better now. :) Cheers.

i don't know if this is strange or not.

when i surfed from 9pm to about 1am, the loading was damn slow. even to the point of giving me error messages.

even though i posted a message, it doesn't show up so i refreshed the page, only to realise i've got multiple replies posted. pretty frustrating.
