The France international, a key member of the side which reached the World Cup final last summer, has been told he can leave Stade Gerland after playing a significant part in Lyon securing a sixth consecutive French league title, with the 26-year-old keen to take on a new challenge. Benítez has earmarked him on a list of prospective summer recruits that also includes Simao Sabrosa of Benfica, Carlos Tevez at West Ham, Roma's Alessandro Mancini and David Silva of Valencia"

Another proof why Liverpool are the most supported club in the world

"The winner in England was Liverpool with 393,000 UK visitors, followed by Manchester United with 385,000 and Arsenal with 290,000.

Chelsea's pitch success appears ahead of their fan base growth as their website only has 215,000 visitors"

There is no doubting Alonso's quality, his distribution, work rate is superb. Even if he stays for next season, there is a chance he wont be a key member of the first team next season if boss opts for a Gerrard / Masch partnership in the middle.

But seriously I think Alonso days are numbered,........

Don't be surprise that Rafa may not sign any of the strikers who he express interested. Use them to distract other clubs... Maybe he will sign kolse, German international. good in his header and a deadly finisher... was shortlisted before by Rafa... Then he may wanted to sell kyut or Pete 'Beanpole', not forgetting he still need a world-class defender to partner with jamie, as Daniel still not a good replacement... signing of Simao will be great, it will give pool another option for attack. Not forgetting a 1st class subsutites in the event of injury to key members of the team. Chelsea, Man U have it, last season Arsenal didn't have good replacements that's why they suffered a dip in form this season.

Rather than compare the midfielders, it'd be much more useful to think of them as offering different possibilities (to use Rafa's fav English word). Wouldn't there be a game where Momo as a Hamann-sort destroyer would be more useful than Alonso or Mascherano? I can think of many.

Besides did anyone notice Mascherano had a shite game against Charlton? It's always tempting to make rash comparisons; I'd rather see that it's great that there is competition for the midfield places.

As bro Kingeros said, if you buy the "next Vieira" hype and then decide Momo doesn't live up to it, it's the newspapers who are laughing all the way to the bank and the footie you have just played is in your head.

I see Momo performing below par in some of the matches this season...esp the one against the scum at anfield... it was quite frustrating when watching the whole team giving 100% commitment to win that all impt game..but Momo was playing with a half hearted attitude...

hopefully..as u may say..it's due to his long term lay off that causes his dipped of form..

Is this the guy who won the Golden Boot winner of the 2006 World Cup? He is like 29 years old already......reached his prime time, IMO.

Brazilian naturally will prefer to attack..he can be deploy as wing back or on the flank..

With Alves, I don't know how he would fit in esp with Finnan did his job so well. He is not as flashy as Alves, but he is the guy to defend and he is consistent as well. Unsung hero just like Didi....

But having said that.......it would be cool to see Alves going forwards, overlapping with Simao / Pennant to attack.:D

oh, i beg to differ. he still has quite a few more good years in him. being in the last year of his contract and he confirmed he is not going to extend his stay with werder bremen, he is going cheap now. he is also quite good physically although he might look slight and no need to tell u about his heading powess. if he had won the golden boot award for 2002 instead of the real ronaldo, they would have to present him with the golden helmet instead...:D

as an attacking right winger who tracks back to help with the defence, i m all for it. but as a defender, haiz... just dont think too much about defenders from brazil. seems like they lack the discipline to curb their attacking instincts and thus, prone to counter attacks. but, that is just me. granted, i agree alves is a good player.

off cse..who can forget Finnan...as i always believe that the core of the team (which Benitez die die must retain) consist of players such as Gerard, Finan, Carragher, Risse....:)

just heard from my colleague that alves can play on both wings. i know simao definitely can. if can get mancini, lagi shiok!!! if alves really comes, hope that finnan can play even better with the competition. but have to say that in the recent pool games, finnan shows that he can cross the ball damn well!!!;)

Same lah bro... i never believe that Brazilian can excel in defending..it's not part of their game..but I will like to see him providing speed and supply crosses...for the attacker to score...

with his inclusion..Benitez will hv no excuse of putting Gerrard on the right again...

so it will be exciting prospect for next season......hopefully they can live up to their reputation in a new league..if they joined Anfield... hopefully no repeat of Speedy Gonzalez (I still find him a decent player..but mayb he's not suitable for the english game)...

Finnan..i never doubt his quality... a quality right back..who knows how to defend, tackle, overlapped and cross... if he is an Englishman... guess it be a never nevile for the 3 lions..:D

Er, is Finnan a right winger before he came to Liverpool? Seems to remember so. But then again, that's quite a long time ago. His crosses are indeed good. The only problem is .... CROSS TO WHO? Bellamy is too short, Crouch may not play that many games, Kuyt is everywhere except in the penalty box....
