Simple calculation what. Using volcano and XXed's rates as an example:

Buy USD in S'pore at 1.28 so SGD 128 = USD 100 take to VN to change @ VND 21.200 = VND 2.120.000.

Take SGD128 to VN and change at VND 16.500 = VND 2.112.000

So taking USD to VN to change is slightly better (VND 8000 per USD 100).

Of course if you take into account your expenses to get to VN (hotel, airfare, etc.) and the time it takes for you to buy USD at the money changer in S'pore, you might as well just bring SGD to VN to change.

Throwing out a quick field report:

After a failed attempt to meet up with some sammies (you know who you are! :) but no worries) and have personal reasons to celebrate decided to head out and explore.

Stop 1: a local salon (le duyen style, but not le duyen). cute, young 18 year old, school girl type look in sexy blue dresses. 1 hour hair wash and face massage. damage 55k. feeling generous so i gave her 100k and told her keep the change (also it was a very good face massage). she's definitely my regular hair wash girl from now on. This place looked very shady, reminiscent of my recent trip to vung tau, so i'm praying for FJ with this girl. U are using an ideal flat XXed's rates vs the reality of 3rd party (exchange agent and bank or others) selling/buying rates. No one on earth will sell currency at exactly what the financial market is.... they will earn few % of sell and buy.

At 12pm, VietinBank sells VND,

1 SGD = 16571 VND
1 USD = 21085 VND

At 12pm, DBS sells USD,

1 USD = 1.277 SGD

If I have I exchange 127.7 SGD to 100 USD and then change to VND, I will get 2108500 VND

If I exchange 127.7 SGD to VND, I will get 2116116.7 VND.

Lets move on with this... :D
