Re: Vietnam - HCM (Thread 3)

recently the S$ to VND exchange rate is down sharply due to US$ rose sharply against major currencies...:)

End of July this year..we can change S$ 1 = 17,150.00
Today think probably change S$ 1 = 16,250.00

If change S$1k will have difference 900,000 which is alot of money...haizzz...can eat many many bowls of bun mam, bun rieu, hu tieu nam vang, etc...or many cups of kopi....:)

good for those who has US$ cash to enjoy the good rate...not sure when Vn gahmen going to devalue the Dong...:)

In fact, I know of a few sporeans and msians like that... suddenly they act like beggars when they land in vn. They would learn the bus routes, eat at the dirtiest roadside stalls etc. One even got into an argument with a taxi driver over a few hundred dongs (which the driver usually keep as tips). I have yet to understand this sudden change in mindset... :p

so why bother to take a bus when you are there for holiday...you are saving on the wrong thing...and very small sum...:p

Is ok to eat at the roadside store if the food is nice...all individual personal taste...besides we always drink beer and eat at roadside stalls...watching the evening peak hours goes by...:)

my reasoning is simple...save on Hotels and Air Tickets will be the bigger savings...save on chionging and drinking will be biggest savings...:)

definitely knew sinkees go to hcm can splurge on everything...many found the places cheap and they hardly goes there a few times per year...so they can spend 5-10 mil per day...:)

all these are IMHO...not to upset anyone...pls skip if you dun like to read...:)

Eating at roadside stall can be cheap but after travel to Vietnam few time, i start to become selective in roadside stall. A roadside stall noodle though very cheap but how can they sell so cheap, is it really only because of low rental? the ingredients are bad..soup contain mainly msg...the taste is obvious.

On the other hand, some noodle shop sell more expensive but the soup are cook with more meat are more tasty..less of msg taste. 1 VN friend bring me to noodle stall (a favourite among japanese expat). The taste of the soup from street noodle soup is really different but the price is double.

End of the day depend on whether u choose quality or price. Street food i go mainly for BBQ or fried food.

Me too still don't understand the Government in VN. Inflation so high and yet they still have not devalue the dong and also reduce all the unnecessary taxes.

yeah great idea...until u factor in inflation rates and the devalued dong, so u change 100k sing get x dongs then 5 yrs down the track u change back to sing dollar and u get much less, further factor in inflation and in real value, u losing out, yeah great investment mind

Vietnams official inflation rate for this period was:

2008 24%.

2009 7%.

2010 12%.

2011 19%.

2012 9%.

2013 6%.

Looking at the US$ vs Dong historical chart, I see that after a period of a rather muted rise between 15,800 and 16,200 for the years prior to 2008, the beginning of that year marked the rapid devaluation of the dong to circa 21,000 in 2011, where it had only slightly devalued to now.

It looks like the increasing value of the Dong versus the Singapore dollar the past 3 or more months is more tied in to the weakening of the Sing$ and not the Dong strengthening. I wonder if this is a function of oil prices heading down? Or are there other fundamental reasons why the Singapore dollar/economy seems to be losing steam?

the Vn Dong rising is because of the US$ increased against major currencies...Vn Dong is pegged to US$...but S$ had increased against other major currencies esp. the Yen, Ringgit, Aus$, etc...:)

we all knew US gahmen stopped printing money and interest rates expected to go higher which will definitely pushed the US$ higher...so let's wait and see...:)

Yen is down because of Abe's quite nutso loose monetary policy, which has unfortunately NOT reflated the Japanese economy, Ozzie dollar down as copper, coal and other natural resource prices (which underpin Australia's economy) have been hitting new recent lows and the Ringit - that currency is down almost 10% vs US$ during the past 3 or so months!

And whilst there was previous expectations of US$ interest rate rises, the benign inflationary numbers and not quite stellar US economic indicators may prompt Yellen to hold off on any rate increases. These are interesting times in the currency markets, and like you, I AM also just waiting and seeing.
