This kinda report really pissed me off!

Carragher hits out at critics of retirement

Jamie Carragher has reacted angrily to suggestions he does not have the stomach to fight for his England place.

The Liverpool defender believes he has played his last game for his country at 29.

However, manager Steve McClaren intends to speak to him again before the match against Germany next month.

Carragher is fed up at being overlooked but bristled when it was suggested in an interview he was taking the easy way out.

'Don't ever call me a bottler on radio with all those thousands of people listening,' he said on talkSPORT. 'I've had the stomach to fight for my place for the last eight years.

'All I can do is play as well as I can for Liverpool. I've never played that well for England because I've played a lot of the time at full-back.

'There's that many people he's [England manager Steve McClaren] played ahead of me. It's a game of opinions.

'But when you're at my age they are all younger than me, they are all going to improve and maybe I won't at my age.

'I'm 29, I've been doing it for eight years and obviously I haven't proved it enough so it's not going to change now is it?

'It's not like I've just got in the squad and I've jumped out.'

Carragher added: 'At the moment it's not 100% official because I've still got to speak to the manager before the next game.

'But it's looking like that and as I said, if there was a major injury crisis and the four centre-halves who he obviously picks ahead of me are all injured and he's absolutely desperate then of course I would (come back), yeah.'

Carragher won the first of his 34 caps in 1999 when he came on as a substitute in the 1-1 draw against Hungary.

He was previously captain of the under-21 side after signing pro forms at Anfield in 1996.

Carragher helped Liverpool win the 2005 Champions League and was part of the team that went down to AC Milan in Europe's premier club competition last season.

However he has never enjoyed the acclaim for his country as he has for his club.

Absolutely. He should have done it ages ago tbh. And hopefully Stevie will fook off England after being played rightback by McClaren one day. Then I will be a very happy Pool fan. :D

Let tat blue boy play all he wants, SG play only for Liverpool. and i believe JC was constantly being treated unfairly, always being seen as the utility man in the squard. he commands alot of respect for his playing ability in the Liverpool squard. Well guess we will stand to gain the most with this decision.

RYAN Babel headed to Liverpool today to complete his move from Ajax as Yossi Benayoun became the latest addition to Rafa Benitez’s squad.

On another highly successful day of negotiating for chief executive Rick Parry, the Reds agreed deals with West Ham and were given permission by Ajax to discuss terms with Babel.

The 20-year-old Dutch forward will meet Anfield officials and prepare to undergo a medical at Melwood while Liverpool look to close the deal.

Benayoun also concludes the formalities of his switch from Upton Park today. The fee for Benayoun is reported as £5m, but officially both clubs have agreed to keep the figure undisclosed.

Chief executive Parry said today: “We’ve agreed the fee with West Ham for Yossi Benayoun. We’re not quite there with Ryan Babel yet, but we’ve now been given permission by Ajax to talk to the player. We hope to reach an agreement with Ajax very shortly.”

The Reds are expecting to pay around £10m for the youngster.

Benitez was in buoyant mood as another crucial part of his summer rebuilding plans neared conclusion.

The Spanish boss believes Benayoun can fill the gap in the squad vacated by the recently departed Luis Garcia.

“They are similar,” agreed Benitez.

“Maybe Luis is a player who scores more goals and Benayoun tends to make more assists. Like Luis, he is a very technical, clever player with a lot of game intelligence. He can also play in many positions, giving us a different option for the team.

“I first saw him play for Racing Santander in La Liga when he was a really good player, but when he first came to England we were watching to be sure he could adapt to a different style of football.

“It’s clear he’s done this very well at West Ham. Liverpool fans will remember how he played in the FA Cup Final against us when he was outstanding. We thought then this was a player who is capable of stepping up to a higher level.”

As with recent signing Fernando Torres, Benitez says Benayoun’s determination to move to Anfield was a key factor in the Reds sustaining their interest.

“He was offered a big new contract at West Ham and received offers from a lot of other clubs offering him more money,” explained Benitez.

“But Yossi’s message was always the same. He said he was desperate to only join Liverpool because this was his dream. When Rick, the Americans and I spoke about the player, we all agreed this is the kind of attitude we and our supporters really like.

“When you have quality players with his ability showing so much passion to play for your club, it’s really good for the team.”

Benitez will be hoping all three of his most recent recruits could be involved in their first training session today.

However, Torres is still nursing a slight injury so his introduction may be delayed.

“Fernando has returned to Liverpool now and we hope he can join training, but we must check his ankle,” explained Benitez. “It’s not a serious injury but we will be careful.”

I cant believe the stick people are giving JC for quitting England. Its the Managers issue, not his if he is not picked. KNS.

With Babel, Yossi and Torres, we have more options in our team now. I am still hoping for a dream winger, but that is not likely now with just one more signing left.

Out ... Fowler, Zenden, Gonzalez, Garcia & Bellamy
In ... Voronin, Leica, Torres, Benayoun & Babel

Seems like the forward line has been revamped.
Which is all rather logical, since our defence has always been right up there ... & it's the incompetence of our forward line that's been the main inadequacy.

Rafa has even come forward to boast that the changes will allow the team to attack with more efficient accuracy:

BOSS: WE'LL BE ON THE ATTACK THIS YEAR
Paul Eaton 14 July 2007

Rafael Benitez has vowed to send his Liverpool side on the attack this season after completing the latest stage of his squad rebuilding.
Following the arrivals of Fernando Torres, Andriy Voronin, Ryan Babel and Yossi Benayoun, the boss has a vast array of fresh striking talents at his disposal and he's hoping his new recruits can fire the Reds towards a successful campaign.

"It is clear that we have quality players coming in and normally that should mean that we will play better," he said.

"The best teams are proactive rather than reactive. We have been quick in the market and now hopefully we can be quick on the pitch.

"I hope we can play more like the way I want us to. Defensively the team has been good and we want to attack. We had more crosses and shots than anyone, but we needed to improve our accuracy. Hopefully, with these players the crossing will be better and so will the finishing.

"In Valencia we had three or four players who all scored between 10 and 15 goals and that's the idea here. If you have one player who can score 20 goals then that is good, but what if he has an injury? Also if the other teams know he is the only player who can score goals, it will be easier for them to control your team in attack.

"We feel that attacking wise we have a much stronger squad, and we will be able to score more goals with this group of players. We have players of quality in key positions, players who can change a game when we need them to. That will allow us to play more of the style of football we want to at Liverpool."
