Re: Vietnam - HCM (Thread 3)
Went to Khoe Massage on Monday. Nice massage without hanky panky I think. 3 rates available. Thai and Shiatsu massage at 199k Dong, Oil massage at 199k Dong and Shiatsu massage on specified areas at 299k Dong all 3 packages at 75 mins. I think they same as Ngoc Anh Massage but this massage I went to is much better than the Ngoc Anh in D3. Facilities like sauna, steam room and shower is much much cleaner than Ngoc Anh. Tips I think is standard 150k Dong to the masseuse. The ladies here are prettier than those in Ngoc Anh too. If the lady has big boobs serving u tea then u hv a very good down blouse sight. They hv 4 branches and I went to the D1 shop. Address is 160 bis Bui Thi Xuan, P.PNL Q1. This shop inside a hotel. 9th floor reception.

Re: Vietnam - HCM (Thread 3)
It's on the English side of the menu. The Vietnamese side didn't hv the clause of service charge and I asked the receptionist and she said it's standard tip for the foreigners.

From a bystander (been 2 years since my last foray to HCM, for short work stay), this thread now makes for better reading minus the negativity and barbs. :p

there is no such thing as standard tippings lol..its just a way for them to earn money and bcos some foreigners dunno that they are suppose to tips. |
Re: Vietnam - HCM (Thread 3)
If I may tell their side of the story...this was told to me by the local gals who are my friends. They said lots of foreigners come in to VN thinking they must be dirt poor and give tips like US$1 or $2. I have come across foreigners who actually have a lot of these small dollar bills to give away as tips. And some of the locals actually feel insulted.
I am not saying to give money away like Santa Claus or spoil market. But come on. VND100k is only like S$6. When I take the taxi to airport, fare comes to 150k, I would give 200k. When the company sends a driver to pick me up and send me for site inspections, if its a long drive like 2 hrs, I tip the driver 100-200k. Anyway it is my hope that foreigners to VN do not act like misers and give their respective countries a bad name. It's not easy to make a living in VN for the locals with rising inflation etc so do help whenever u can. Just sharing my opinion. PS: I used to NOT give tips or give very little during my early years in VN until I made lots of local friends who explained better how things work. Their basic salaries are just enough for the basics like rentals, food etc and they really count on tips to go that extra mile. :) |

Re: Vietnam - HCM (Thread 3)
hi bro,
Why should giving US$1 or 2 consider insulting them? That is because they used to receive alot of tip in tourist area which change their attitude. US$1-2 enough to buy them food in their own local place....when their salary just enough to pay rental and food, any tip they received should feel happy, why still need to feel being insulted? Some vietnamese like to tip esp. with their foreign friend around for the sake of "showing off" implied they are of a higher status. Personally i think tipping is really bad in this kind of country, it make them always demand tip irregardless their service is good or bad. When someone give less or no tip, they end up giving poor attitude. (Does not include those job where there is no salary, only earn tip) Taxi fare 150K and u give 200K  You are really generous. Ppl from poor country have their way of survival. No offence, just my POV. Quote:

yes...some of them actually think that we owe them tips and its a must.. to me,u got to earn the tips..its not a must. i encounter a few times where the waiters and security guard looking after bike comment that "rich and got money ride expensive bike but tips so little" i simply turn around smile at them and say back in Vietnamese..."dont take it then if its too little":D |
Re: Vietnam - HCM (Thread 3)
Dung roi...
if want tip....must work hard do extra.....not because they have lower wages can expect ppl giving more tips to them to go the extra mile. Quote:

Re: Vietnam - HCM (Thread 3)
Don't worry no offence taken. As I mentioned, it's just my opinion... and I used to think like u, too... during my early years in VN. Btw 50k vnd is only S$3... I don't think that's generous.

Yes there are those who give bad service and u have the right not to tip as a show of protest. Quote:
