Well.....basically i go there to relax....i feel very hectic working in sg.....stress up.
Go batam.....things suddenly becomes very slow.....
Best point is not much crowd at eating places.
Hotels n makan is cheap too.
Sometimes i do get giggles from locals who found out i dun understand Indonesian much....but im not offended at all.
Smiles n giggles from those cute indon retail gals......priceless.

Yea,i think it is becos of the recent Jakarta bombing. Security has been stepped up in most tourist area in Indonesia. In my last trip on Jan,even Harbour Bay were long queued. I think as the days draws nearer to CNY,situation will be worse.

In some Batam hotels,Sundays were considered as weekday. Applies to Kaha too,hehehe...

Yea,i suggest when taking ojek,better put on helmet and when take taxi if you are taking the vehicle commander seat,better put on seat belt. Lots of police motorbikes and cars on patrol. And they can fine anyone with the smallest offence.

I have this experience before,i took a taxi from Formosa hotel to somewhere,the taxi quoted me 50k from point A to point B,he will ask me if i want to use him to return back to hotel after i reach my destination,i told him "yes" and during the return,he only charge me 40k for the ride back.

Yes,me too..like this place. Did you notice the student's behavior when they past by a room of some particular Buddha/Deity statue? Just outside the room (they didnt step inside) whenever they past by,they will bow down to show respect. I am really impress by this behavior. It has given me the impression that the school has taught the children and students good.

The next time if you are there ,give a go at the vegetarian restaurant there. Cheap and good stuffs,hehehe...

I have stayed in this hotel twice, 2 months ago, and have booked 2 rooms last week for 4 Feb to 6 Feb, the cost for superior room I paid through Agoda is S$73.60 per night, including tax with 2 free breakfast.

The room is cleaned, no smell from toilet sewerage & cigarette and high floor. On one side, you will see the sea and the other BCS mall & Swimming pool.

Note: If you are a smoker and tend to smoke in room, ask for smoking room instead to save yourself from being fine. The recept will explain before checking in.

Usually its about the same. But there is a bargained price and non-bargained price in booking joint at most time or at some point you can call it with taxi and with no taxi price. (note : some joint,some OKT dont entertain bargaining at all) Most time if you show that you are 1st timer or inexperience to some joint or certain okt,the mark up will be higher. Mark up will always be high for almost everything in Indonesia w/o a menu for almost everyone. Always at least try to bargain downward. Its their buisness culture to bargain.

However,not everyone will have the same experience tho. And in most part of Indonesia where you are suppose to bargain and yet didnt,be prepare to pay the full price and get chop.

In total agreement. These FLs may be in carhoot with the police. Planting of drugs in the KTV or hotel room, followed by raids SPECIFICALLY your room is a tell tale sign of sabo.

If you don't have a regular FL, or thru some contact you trust, it is better not to engage w them.

Secondly, the issue of COD applies, no such thing as PAY FIRST, see you later.

thirdly, thief can occur if you are not careful with your belongings.

Yes,the Galang refugee history serves a good lesson for a war-torn country that leads its people to seek refuge in another country faraway from home. Ex Vietnam camp aka Galang Camp has many historic sites that were currently lacking maintenance due the lack of fund. Going to this place again in 2016 before all the historic sites one day disappears.

War,has never been a good thing since the history of mankind.

I believe most Sillyporean tourist will not travel this far.Took about 1.5 hour to go and another about 1.5 hour to get back to Nagoya. (depending on the time of the day)


Maybe i should one day do a write up on Galang Camp ,...when i have the time.

The Ex-Vietnam refugee camp (aka Galang Camp) has kept most of its things intact and with lots of photos displayed in their mini museum. For most of us who has never seen or understood about refugees, it is a good learning experience to tour this place.

Sorry to gatecrash into your story/updates. I thought i would add a little background on this refugees issue from our Singapore perspective (Operation Thunderstorm).

I heard of this incident during my NS days in Changi from those senior officers who were deployed then. Very exciting and worrying when i was serving.

There were 3 "exciting" events (Pedra Branca, Hijack of SQ 117 & Operation Thunderstorm) for those who were around those era. :D

Most people will know about SQ117 but not much on Pedra Branca (Horsburgh Lighthouse) & Operation Thunderstorm. I will not write about SQ & PB.

You maybe wondering why Batam has so many Japanese names for their town. At one time it was occupied by the Japanese. Today tourists come to the island for golf games and tourisy activities. A dark tourist history predates the boat-people remains to be unfolded. A trip to pantai serangoon will provide some clue to Japanese living in Galang.

Right after the war, the Japanese POW were sent to Galang to grow pineapples before being repatriated. The locals suspected the Yamamoto gold is still hidden on the island. I am going to buy a metal detector if i retire one day. Meanwhile on occasional 'field' trips, i only dig out some ancient sea shells and corals right up on some hills and knolls. It suggests the Riau Islands group is relatively young. Islets are still emerging out of the seas every year. Who wants to own an island?

Will update the history of Batam with Part 3: Pulau Abang shipwrecks from the Admiral Ching Ho era. I don't know but there might be gold in the 3 sunken ships.
