Breaking news, seems that the Barry deal is off.

BBC SPORT | Football | My Club | Aston Villa | Villa call off Barry move to Reds

I myself quite ambivalent about it. I don't mind if we get a top drawer attacking midfielder instead. Just hope we have a good Plan B.

KEANE MAKES LIVERPOOL DEBUT

Rafael Benitez declared himself pretty satisfied with the debut of Robbie Keane after the Republic of Ireland star enjoyed a 45 minute run-out during the goalless draw with La Liga runners-up Villarreal at the El Madrigal Stadium.
The new Kop number seven was paired alongside fellow new signing David Ngog for the first half, and Keane was unfortunate not to make it a scoring debut when he came close with an effort in the first half.

"To see Robbie with the new lads out there was positive," said Benitez. "Robbie worked hard and he wanted to impress. He played his part in some good movements in attack and showed his quality."

The game also saw the return to action of the Spanish heroes Fernando Torres, Xabi Alonso, Alvaro Arbeloa and former Villarreal favourite Pepe Reina, who all enjoyed their first outing of pre-season in the second half.

The boss also gave a strong hint that he could pair Keane and Torres for the first time in attack against Rangers in Saturday's friendly at Ibrox.

"I want to see them together before our first game in the Champions League qualifier," said Benitez.

"They will have enough games now to play together before the start of the season and maybe they will have 45 minutes on Saturday.

"Torres will play some games in a row now. He had some chances tonight but he only played for 20 minutes which was the idea in his first game back."

The boss also praised youngsters Ngog and Krisztian Nemeth who joined Keane in making their Reds bow in Spain.

"Ngog doesn't know his team-mates yet but he worked hard and again it was positive for us," said Benitez. "Nemeth deserved his chance and he showed his quality.

"The main idea for us tonight was to improve the fitness level of the team and I think we did that."

Liverpool should just move on to other players, leave the Barry alone. For that kind of money, they can buy another 2 good players. :)

It will be a waste to miss out on a gem like Barry. :(
Hope they can iron out the problems asap.
He remind me of Steve Nicol aka Mr Versatile....
A player who can play any positions and score !!

I think we all like Barry but I'm not convinced that he is worth that much money. Would he even improve the squad? He is more of a defensive minded player albeit a left sided one but I think we have adequate resources for that role with Mascharano, Alonso, Lucas and even Plessis. Incidentally, the Alonso to Juve saga has not ended with news that Juve players are keen to see Alonso coming to the club. I would hate to see that happen becoz Alonso is possibly the closest player we have at the moment that plays like the good old pass-master that is Jan Molby. Besides, losing him and replacing him with Barry (whom I rate as a good player but one that is below Alonso) is not good business sense.

Would playing Barry as a left midfielder work? Thats debatable especially if Rafa goes for his 4-2-2-1-1 formation with Gerard in the middle and Keane/Kuyt playing the right forward role. Babel/Benayoun will play the left though I'm sure a more natural attacking left sided player like Silva would be more ideal. Even if Barry played in the middle as he did for England, then the left sided role would still not be resolved and worse still, we won't have enough money to buy anyone else.

REDS TO FACE BELGIANS IN QUALIFIER

Liverpool have been paired with Belgian side Standard Liege in the third qualifying round for this season's Champions League.

The first leg is expected to be played in Belgium on 12/13 August with the return game at Anfield two weeks later.

Standard Liege are aiming to qualify for the group stages of the competition for the first time in their history having ended a 25-year wait for their domestic league crown last season.

The two teams last met in European competition back in the second round of the Cup Winners Cup campaign of 1965-66 when the Reds ran out 5-2 aggregate winners.

ESPNsoccernet - England - O'Neill accepts Barry could still join Liverpool

Wouldn't it be particularly good now if we DON'T sign Barry? LOL

On a more serious note, I find it interesting that we seem to (or have been perceived to) delay/bargain the Barry deal while we have done the Keane transfer much more quickly and smoothly, for a similarly large sum of money (almost tantamount to overpaying), plus add an extra to the Spurs charity.

This seems to cast doubt on two theories - that we have no money and that we are being difficult on the Barry case. One apparent explanation is that we don't value Barry as much as Keane, not sure how true that it though. In any case, it is quite clear that the MON factor is quite negligible. :D
