JOSE: WE STRUGGLED TODAY
Paul Eaton 20 January 2007

Jose Mourinho had no complaints after watching his side be outplayed and beaten by Liverpool on Saturday afternoon.

Chelsea's lead over Liverpool in the league table has been cut to just five points after goals from Dirk Kuyt and Jermaine Pennant secured a well deserved victory for Rafael Benitez's men.

Chelsea rarely threatened as an attacking force but it was at the back - where Paolo Ferreira and Michael Essien formed a makshift central defensive - where Mourinho felt his side had most problems.

He said: "Liverpool are happy today and they deserve to be happy because they played well and deserved to win the game.

"I was hoping we could get through the first 15 minutes without conceding because we had players playing out of position and those players would have gained confidence if we'd made a good start.

"When we went behind after a few minutes and then conceded another shortly after we knew it was going to be very difficult.

"Rafa isn't stupid and I'm not a magician. We had no central defenders and I knew two weeks ago that Crouch and Kuyt would play in this game. The defenders we have could have coped with Bellamy but they couldn't cope with Crouch winning the headers and Kuyt's strength holding the ball up.

"In other games of late we've been able to cope but I knew we'd have problems today and Liverpool did very well."

This guy just doesn't know how to lose graciously.... At first glance, it seems like he accepted defeat, but his words were thinly veiled... When he stated the obvious that his team had to hold out for the first 15 mins... and that rafa is smart and he cannot weave magic to get terry fit...

He is actually admitting that Rafa is a tactical genius hahaha.

Not sure if Essien and Ferreira would have coped with Bellers but all credit to Rafa for playing Kuyt and Crouch.

Great team perfomance and Carra was again massive. Even players like Pennant and Fabio are beginning to look their part. ;)

What a game !!! Sweet sweet revenge. Well done our beloved REDs !!!

This is truly a team performance. Everybody played their part very well. Everybody trying to win the ball and applying pressure all the time.

This is the Liverpool we all REDs fans want to see. Let's hope this is not a one-off performance. If we keep up this momentum, we may just make it to the top.

Cheski does look worse than normal yesterday. I guess if Terry had been around and Cech not so rusty, things may have been different. And the Mourihno issue may have been playing on their minds.

But there is no denying we deserved this win 100% becos we played with our hearts.

All the way REDs !!!

Cheers

Dun insult Rafa's genius ... Essien (a midfielder) & Ferreira (a full-back), now covering in the centre of defence, can still run all night or burst at pace BUT they can't outjump Crouch. That's why Crouch is tactically a genial choice, compared to Bellamy.

'I am not interested in what anyone else says about us, just let me enjoy this result.' ~ Rafa Benitez

We are the form team in the Premiership and for a while now bro.

Since the Arsenal defeat (Highbury):

P 12
W 9
D 2
L 1
F 23
A 1
GD +22
Pts Won 29 (out of 36)
Pts Dropped 7

And we probably should have beaten Boro, Rovers and Pompey and deserved to get full points! (sigh)

:D

All the pundits have been saying we are the form team of the moment. No doubt about that. But even though we may have won pretty often lately in the league, sometimes we were not very convincing enuf and had to labour quite hard to get the wins, even against weaker sides. While we may be pretty good in the league, we failed miserably against the Gunners in the FA and Carling Cup. A great team must be able to perform in all competitions, not just the league (even though Rafa says the cups are not his priority -- but he said that becos we lost. If we had won, he would have said something different.)

A team's form will go up and down. We can't possibly maintain a good form all the time. Let's not get carried away by all the talk about "form".

But, as long as we play with our hearts like we did against the Blues, we will persevere.

Cheers

Congrats Pool, my best sunday, Thank YOU!! We won, they played the best game all season, awsome goals, we could have gotten 6-0 if didn't miss some, but overall, great defence. Gd job! :)

Well this I disagree. You got to understand the system that Rafa is building. It is a machine. It is not a high tempo or passing game like Scum or Arse. It is a machine that will break you down home or away over 90 mins.

A machine that is meant to run on the whole season.

So we are not just on good form. The machine is working well.

We have conceded one goal in these 12 games.

Scored average of 2 per game - which means we should have won them all.

Drawn one of our home games and won the rest. No one is going to come to Anfield now and hope to get something with ten men in front of their goal.

We have won all the games in which we have scored first.

Away, I admit we got to improve. And also need to show better composure when we concede.

Believe me, Rafa is on to something. In the seasons to come, if he gets the players he wants, we will go on long winning runs. Last season's runs, like this season's run, were no fluke.

Which planet are you from??
Name me 1 team that does well on all fronts ... not even when LFC was reigning supreme in the 80s, did we managed to win more than just the league most of the time.

The man decided on which team to field for the night ... & you're suggesting his fielding of 2nd stringers as a sign of disinterest??
Of course, he would have said something different, had LFC been still in the running for either Cups ... he'd say: "Not only Wnger has a way with the kids" ;)

Right, before the Premiership, it was a darn thing to win the league and (FA) cup double. Correct me if I'm wrong, no club had done it before? I remember we won the old Division 1 league title under Kenny and then got beat by Wimbledon in the cup.

I agree with you about Rafa trying to build a good team. My point is that we are not there yet. All this talk about "form" can be quite misleading, giving the impression that we are good enuf and get carried away, when in actual fact, like you have alluded, we are not yet there. And in fact, quite some way to go.

Cheers
