Steven Gerrard has seen off stiff competition from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to make it into the uefa.com Team of the Year.
The Liverpool skipper was voted Europe's best right-winger by football fans across the continent.

I've seen the last 3 seasons of Gerrard regularly, I think his level has been impressive all this three seasons, even when he had to sacrifice for the team and play in the right and a few times in the left this season.

It will be complicated to get again the mad number of 23 goals in a season he got last season, as that's not normal, but I'm amazed with this player :)

There were still long spells when we couldn't get hold of the ball in midfield though.
I'm sure Rafa would prefer a ball winner in there alongside Alonso and at the moment it's Gerrard.
I don't think this arrangement will last though once Sissoko's back and fully fit, even though we could make a very strong argument for Gerrard staying in the centre of midfield.

Is an indication that Gerrard realizes that if he wants to stay in his favourite position (central midfield) he has to be more considered in his overall play .

Can't just move forward at will and that he is in fact competing with Sissoko and Alonso for a midfield spot. He knows when fit he'll always be on the team sheet , what he's now realised is that if he wants the CM role he has to convince Rafa not to move him .

Gerrard has been magnificent in his return to the centre of midfield, but I still think Rafa will put him back on the right once Sissoko is fit. Rafa is a cautious manager who prefers to have 2 defensive minded midfielders in the centre.

Imo this can only benefit the team, as when Stevie plays in the middle he has a lot more responsibility to defend as well as attack because that is Rafa's way of playing. Unless we play 3 in the centre of midfield, Gerrard's extremely high attacking threat will be slightly restricted as he wont have the freedom we saw he had last season when he was roaming all over the place causing havoc.

The quartet of Kewell, Alonso, Sissoko and Gerrard is the strongest midfield in Europe when they are all at the top of their game and I think them 4 will give us the best chance of getting past Barcelona.

On paper bro. Kewell needs matches to be in form. Unless Rafa wants to replay the CL final again, he probably should play someone who is match fit. Right now the Riise-Aurelio combo, which has the advantage of being rotatable, is probably the boss's preference. ;)

Totally agree with you, bro... Especially since both (JAR & Fabio) their forms are picking (or peaking) up right now... :D

liverpool sign yet another young player... tis time a dutch frm Ajax... 18 yr old..... called Jordy Brouwer....
The teenager is manager Rafael Benitez's third signing in the transfer window, with Sampdoria's Italy Under-21 goalkeeper Daniele Padelli and Boca Juniors' Emiliano Insua both having joined on loan.
'We have made a good signing for the future in Jordy,' said chief executive Rick Parry of the Holland Under-19 international.

'He has had a youth contract at Ajax but has opted to build his career at Liverpool.

'We have been monitoring his progress and look forward to developing his potential at Anfield.'

Benitez has previously made it clear more needs to be invested in the Reds' youth policy.

I was contemplating rallying a YNWA meet-up of REds from this thread on 3rd Feb, when Reds play Blue from across the Mersey ... library75 can help us get good seats at HRC ... who's interested??

I beg to differ ... I think Riise does a better job at LM, compared to Kewell - what more, Kewell will not have match fitness aftr such a long lay-off, not to mention that he has never played 1 single impressive match during his time with LFC so far.

Totally agree with you bro. I hadn't been very impressed with Kewell so far too, other than the one or two goals he scored with his left foot. He just doesn't seem to play with his heart much. Machiam going through motion leh. Some more easy to get injured wan. We need Riise's hardworking attitude and his pile-driver at times. I think opposition goalkeeper must really be scared till want to pee when they see him shooting with his lethal left foot.

BTW, why all these sudden talk about Kewell? Is he coming back? How about the status of our other injured stars? Bro U got updates?

Cheers

Sissoko n Zenden are said to be nearing full fitness after recovering from long term injury problems according to the official web today... as for Kewell... i rem seeing somewhere tat he might b back in time for the CL clash with Barca... but then i dun tink he will play due to lack of match fitness.... Hope tis is the last time seeing him getting such long term injury... used to b a veri good player b4 he came liverpool........ n i almost bought his jersey when he arrived......

Ever stopped & pondered why he was so good at Leeds??
Or ever noticed how well Heskey was doing at Leicester ... & now at Wigan??
Well, when good players who only need to do 1 job come to LFC ... they then have to learn quickly to do more than 1 job ... those who succeed become the really great players. ;)
