One day, I was a kid and my biggest worry was whether my crush would reply to my text or not. Then, all of a sudden, I’ve crossed the thirty-year-old threshold despite feeling like I’m still a child. Ok maybe not a child, but definitely not an adult ready to shoulder more responsibilities than ever. That’s why even I surprised myself when I willingly took on an extra responsibility for one of my family members during this CNY. Of course, there was a catch to it which shall be revealed soon. ——— As a new citizen of Singapore and an ex-Malaysian, the hard truth is that most of my family members and relatives are in Malaysia. Specifically, Penang. Like every year, I returned to Penang to celebrate CNY. This year, it was a bit different. I drove my brand new BYD Seal. When we rolled into my kampung, we caused a bit of a stir as my uncles, aunties, my cousins, nieces and nephews were all awestruck by the sleek design of the car. “Memang lagi best than Tesla,” my 堂哥 mused after having a sit in my car, his eyes wide with admiration. “你儿子很会赚钱hor，好命咯你们两个,” a few relatives chuckled, directing their playful comments to my parents, haha! However, it was a young lady who was holding a baby in her arms that caught my attention. From inside our family house, she peered through the window at us before walking away. “Oh who is that lady and the baby?” I asked, turning around. “Who? Oh! You mean Ying Ying? You forgot already meh? She is Ah Kai’s wife and the baby is his son la!” My 堂哥 lowered down his voice and whispered. The memory clicked Ah Kai, the youngest cousin of my generation in our family. Last year, he finally turned 18. Not only that, he also became a dad! Ah Kai was never good at academics in school. Hence, I wasn’t surprised when my parents told me he didn’t even sit for his SPM and decided to drop out to work. What surprised me was the fact that he became the first among us in the family, to marry and have a child. I heard the girl, Ying Ying, was equally young as Ah Kai, also a dropout and that she had a bad relationship with her family. Obviously, the relationship got worse after the pregnancy announcement. She had been staying at our family house since then. To support his new family, Ah Kai like many of us from Malaysia, came to Singapore to find work. I knew he had joined one of the hotpot franchises and apparently he decided not to come back home during CNY for extra pay. There was something about Ying Ying which stirred my heart. Although, I couldn’t quite place why. ——— At our CNY eve reunion dinner, I finally got a good look at her. She wore a chic, burgundy-coloured modern cheongsam, the bodice was tailored to cinch at her waist, boasting off her youthful but alluring womanly curve. Author's Note: As you might deduce now, the story is inspired by my real life relatives. She then leaned into me, sobbing. “Oh, her hair smells nice,” I thought. “Then how?” I wanted to help. “Erm, you got Touch n Go wallet here in Malaysia?” She asked. I nodded. Without her asking and saying more, I transferred whatever I had to her. She was surprised when she realised I transferred her $10000+ ringgit. “I hope this can help for the next few months at least, I also this will give Ah Kai some time to turn things around,” I said. She bit her lip, wiped off her tears and nodded in silence. “I am sorry for crying, so embarrassing…” she murmured. Stupid me, I asked if she still wanted roti prata. “You mean roti canai? It’s ok, 我哭到很累了我在车睡一下,” she lamented softly. She then lowered the car seat and proceeded to shut her eyes off.
