Covid 19 proof:
Payback in 10 shots, after that it’s bonus for you
(Average $3000, if we spent $300 on Russian FL per shot, who rep the Caucasian doll displayed, 10 times, and beyond we make back)

I recalled seeing one really beautiful Asian doll, impressive and sexy.
Sigh, unfortunately no chance to buy one, no place to put and use in private.
Wish I could have a house of my own and spend a bit of my time like this man in YouTube
https://youtu.be/10MhpDAAtjo

However, if I am rich and have several property, maybe I will house a real mistress haha instead of a doll, but have to take the problems that come along with a human.

Married to a Doll: Why One Man Advocates Synthetic Love
Davecat lives with his wife and mistress, both dolls, and thinks synthetic partners are ideal for those who don't want to deal with humans' inconsistencies.

Davecat met his future wife, Sidore Kuroneko at a goth club in 2000, so the story goes. The less romantic but perhaps more true version is that he saved up for a year and a half to buy her online. She cost about $6,000.

Sidore is a RealDoll, manufactured by Abyss Creations in the shape of a human woman. She is covered in artificial skin made of silicone, so she’s soft. These high-end, anatomically correct—even equipped with fake tongues—love dolls (or capital-D Dolls) are ostensibly made for sex. But 40-year-old Davecat (a nickname acquired from videogames that he now prefers to go by) and others who call themselves iDollators see their dolls as life partners, not sex toys. Davecat and Sidore (or, as he sometimes calls her, Shi-chan) obviously aren’t legally married, but they do have matching wedding bands that say “Synthetik [sic] love lasts forever,” and he says they’re considering some sort of ceremony for their 15th anniversary.

Davecat considers himself an activist for synthetic love, and the rights of synthetic humans, such as Shi-chan. He’s active online, with an iDollator blog, “Shouting to hear the echoes,” that he updates regularly, and has appeared on TLC’s show My Strange Addiction, as well as in a BBC documentary called Guys and Dolls.

According to the backstory of Davecat’s relationships, his Doll mistress (and Sidore’s girlfriend), Elena Vostrikova, saw Davecat and Sidore in Guys and Dolls and moved from Russia to be with them. Davecat purchased Elena, or Lenka, in 2012, and the three of them now share a one-bedroom apartment in southeastern Michigan.

I spoke with Davecat over email about the ups and downs of synthetic relationships.

When and why did you purchase your first Doll? Were you thinking of companionship at the time, or was it just for sex?

I bought Shi-chan back in 2000. Admittedly, my reasons for purchasing her were 70 percent sex, 30 percent companionship. I've always been attracted to artificial women such as mannequins, and especially Gynoids, which are robots made in the likeness of human females. In late 1998 one of my best friends, showed me the RealDoll website, as she knew I was keen on artificial women. I thought they were gorgeous creations, and having one would not only dispel loneliness, but be excellent for sex as well. And I was right!

When did you start feeling like Sidore was not just a sex toy but someone/something you were in a relationship with?

It actually didn't take me too long to regard Shi-chan as a synthetic person, and not simply a thing; it occurred pretty much when I opened her crate for the first time. I was immediately stunned by her lifelike beauty, and after I mentally collected myself, extracted her from her crate, and sat her down on the couch, I just held her in my arms for a while. It felt so right and natural, if you'll pardon the pun. It seemed perfectly normal for me to treat something that resembles an organic woman the same way I'd treat an actual organic woman.

Part of the (sexual) appeal of synthetics is how much they look like their organic counterparts. If you have a robot shaped like a refrigerator, that won't have as much draw as a robot in the shape of a human; people will be more willing to interact with the human-shaped one. Further still, if that humanoid robot has artificial skin and sounds like a human, most people dealing with it are more than likely to even have a moment where they forget it's a robot. With Sidore, her draw was instantaneous. There was never a moment when Shi-chan—or any Doll, for that matter—was merely an object to me.

Have you always been interested in dolls, and if so, was it always in a sexual way?

I've always been fascinated by the idea of artificial people, specifically artificial women. Before I knew Dolls existed, I'd long identified as being a technosexual, even before I knew there was a word for it. A technosexual is someone who is attracted to robots. Like any subculture, there's many shades within the term. Some technosexuals prefer their organic partners to dress as robots; others are attracted to robots who don't necessarily have a humanoid appearance, such as R2-D2. My preference is for humanoid robots that are covered in artificial flesh, so they look organic upon first glance; both Geminoid-F and the Actroid series of Gynoids by Hiroshi Ishiguro are excellent examples.

Obviously, I’m sexually attracted to synthetic humans, such as Gynoids and Dolls, but the much larger part of their appeal is that they're humans, but they don't possess any of the unpleasant qualities that organic, flesh and blood humans have. A synthetic will never lie to you, cheat on you, criticize you, or be otherwise disagreeable. It’s rare enough to find organics who don't have something going on with them, and being able to make a partner of one is rarer still.

In your episode of My Strange Addiction, you talk about how you're perfectly aware she's a doll, and you're not trying to pretend she's a person. Yet you consider yourself married to Sidore, a marriage/relationship being something that is inherently two-sided. How do you reconcile those two things in your head at once?

Both Sidore and Elena have two backstories. One in which Sidore is the daughter of a Japanese father and an English mother, and was born in Japan and raised in Manchester, England. Elena's is similar; she grew up in Vladivostok, Russia. The other backstory they have is that they're Dolls. Self-aware Dolls, but Dolls nonetheless. In one backstory they have favorite foods; in the other, they don't eat, becaus they don't have digestive tracts... because they're Dolls. You get the idea.

I've had that dichotomy for as long as I've had Shi-chan and Lenka, and it doesn't seem to be going away any time soon. As I write their characters, they each express themselves through the Internet; they both have their own Twitter feeds, and Shi-chan has a Tumblr. Playing up the Doll aspect allows me to get comedy from the situation, such as when Sidore wonders why I don't just remove my sinuses when my allergies flare up, but writing detailed histories for them exercises my creative writing skills, and makes them more 'human'. Like I said, the dichotomy probably won't be solved any time soon.

Have you ever been in a relationship with a human woman, and would you want to in the future? Do you find yourself attracted to human women?

I'd been in relationships with organic women prior to, and after, having Shi-chan enter my life. When I say “relationships,” I really mean “affairs where I was the other man;” I've never been in a situation where I was with an organic woman who didn't already have a boyfriend.

I don't consider myself to be a very persuasive person; when I was growing up, my father was always pushing me into doing things that I didn't want to do, and as a consequence, I didn't ever want to be That Guy Who's Being Aggressively Persuasive. So instead of asking whatever lass I was with to consider me as a boyfriend, I simply wouldn't force the issue.

I'm still quite attracted to organic women, at least visually. But just because someone's attractive doesn't mean they have a mindset or a personality that’s compatible with my own. I figure that instead of chasing after an ideal person who either doesn't exist in the first place, or is already with someone else, why not buy a Doll? I don't gamble, and I'm not keen on taking emotional chances. We've all seen relationships where things start out fantastically, and then just end up falling apart. A friend of mine just got divorced after 17 years of marriage. That's an enormous investment of time, money, and emotion, and I'm not interested in having someone in my life who may bail at any time, or who transforms into someone unpleasant. Ultimately, getting romantically involved with an organic woman doesn't seem worth it to me.

In December 2012, you purchased a second Doll. How come? Did you feel like your marriage was getting stale?

Back in the early 2000s, my goal was to purchase at least one Doll from every company that's out there. One of the objectives of my blog is to introduce people who aren't iDollators or technosexuals to the idea of synthetic partners, and having multiple Dolls from various companies would enable me to compare and contrast them, so that people could learn what makes them different, and choose the one that's right for them. Also, I always thought it would be cool to have photoshoots featuring multiple Dolls interacting with each other; doing so would further make them less seem like 'things', and more like people. As it is, however, there are around 20 different companies across six or so countries, and unfortunately, I don't have that kind of money. So now my goal is about five. Short of acquiring a two-bedroom flat, I won't have the space for more than five, either.

In a more fictitious context, I thought it would be nice to get a silicone companion for Sidore, so she isn't lonely or bored whenever I'm away from home. As they're both bisexual, they get to enjoy each other on multiple levels. If anything, adding Elena to our partnership has only improved it, as we all appreciate what each other has to offer. Besides, if and when I manage to get additional Dolls, Sidore will always remain my wife; I've no intention of marrying any of the other Dolls we'll have.

My marriage to Sidore is open in the context of she allows me to do anything I want, as long as it's only with a synthetic woman. Incidentally, those are the exact same conditions under which I'll allow her to do anything extracurricular. Very straightforward, yet simple!

But you say you've been in relationships with organic women "prior to and after having Shi-chan enter my life." Is there a story there? Did a relationship/affair you were having with an organic woman cause problems with your relationship with Sidore or vice versa?

I was seeing an organic lass—a coworker, from several jobs ago—who knew that I had Shi-chan. This was back when I was of the mindset that Sidore would remain my wife, but I'd still look now and again for an organic lass to be friends with benefits with. Our relationship started out alright, but several months into it, whenever I’d attempt to get together after work with her, she'd always have something come up. I was beating myself up over it when I realized: Why am I wasting my time trying to get her to hang out and be romantically involved with me, when I have a Doll who is in love with me at home? Plus, it was a bit of a contest with said coworker, as she was interested in two other blokes while she was seeing me. As I'm not competitive, either, I decided that pursuing her was a wasted effort, especially in light of Sidore not requiring any of that silliness.

Then there was the lass I bought a house with back in 2003. I was attempting to help her out of a bad relationship. She claimed to be one of my best friends. She wasn't the least bit romantically interested in me, but I thought that if I helped her and she and I lived under the same roof, eventually she'd view me more favorably. Turns out that didn't happen, as I later discovered that she was a pathological liar with a coke addiction, and I moved out of the house after living there for only four months. That really drove home to me that I guess I'm too trusting with some organics. Some of them can be far too unpredictable. Synthetics have a consistency that I'm thankful for.

What is a typical week like for you? Do you spend most of your time at home with Sidore and Elena, or do you go out with friends? When you do go out, do you ever bring either of them with you? I imagine people in public would react strangely—does that keep you from doing coupley stuff like going to movies?

Contrary to what most of the TV shows we appear in would have you believe, I actually go out quite a bit! Well, enough, I'd say. I'm not a “people person,” and although I love my friends, it's better for an introvert like myself to spend more time alone. Having said that, though, I always have a fantastic time whenever I'm with mates.

During the week, I'm usually at work—I do data entry and other bits and bobs at a machine shop—then I come home and either catch up on the Internet, or interact with Sidore and Elena. My job has me come in early, so I usually go to bed early Friday evenings, after meeting my friends online for whatever videogame has caught our fancy, or physically hanging out with them. Saturday evenings have me getting together with friends as well, and Sunday, I usually spend time with my rubber troublemakers, taking photos, watching a film or a telly program, writing or doing research for “Shouting to hear the echoes,” or getting up to other things.

Also contrary to what most people believe, I don't take Shi-chan or Lenka with me when I go out. For one, they're heavy (78 lbs and 57 lbs, respectively), and for another, I'm not so deluded as to think that taking them out and about with me wouldn't raise more than a few eyebrows. Also, I wouldn't want to put either myself or whichever synthetic lass I'd have with me in danger. I don't trust random people enough to think we wouldn't be verbally or physically attacked. People have a long and sordid history of being violent toward that which they don't understand. Or so I'm told.

What do your family and friends think of your relationship?

The way my friends view my relationship ranges from “Well, that's just what Davecat gets up to, I suppose,” to “Be sure to tell your girls I said ‘Hi!'” Most of them are cool with it; pretty much all of my friends are into quirky things, so they can empathize. I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few among them who would rather see me with an organic lass, but overall, they think Sidore and Elena are rather neat. Curiously enough, more of my female friends like them than my male ones. A couple of female friends have picked out articles of clothing for Shi-chan and Lenka on a few occasions!

Of my Mum and Dad, Mum was more open-minded of the two—years ago, when I was in my eyeliner phase, she taught me how to apply it properly—so although she probably would've liked to be a grandmother at some point, she was okay with my unconventional partnership. Dad, on the other hand, to this day categorically refuses to talk about Sidore, Dolls, Gynoids, etc. He's never come out and said it, but he wishes that I were more conventional and acted like everyone else. I wouldn't say that me being an iDollator has driven a wedge into our relationship, as the wedge was already there long before Sidore entered my life. I once told him, half-jokingly, that his attitude is no way to treat his daughter-in-law, but as the man has no sense of humor, he didn't think much of that statement.

Re: real looking sex doll

What a waste.

Maybe can ask them whether these sex dolls got laylong or not.

Maybe Singapore FA can import and put these to good use in kallang Stadium. After that laylong to football fans.

South Korea club FC Seoul apologise as sex dolls appear in stands

Leading South Korea club FC Seoul apologised to fans after inadvertently substituting supporters in the stands with sex dolls during their 1-0 win over Gwangju FC on Sunday.

While the season started on May 8, fans are not yet allowed in stadiums because of the coronavirus outbreak.

- Stream new episodes of ESPN FC Monday-Friday on ESPN+
- Stream every episode of 30 for 30: Soccer Stories on ESPN+
- Notebook: Lloris' guard dog, Man Utd calm on Gomes

For Seoul's first home game, around 20 mannequins, many holding banners and all wearing masks, were spaced evenly around the seats behind the goal usually occupied by the club's most active fans.

As the game progressed, however, Korean social media started to light up as it became apparent to viewers that these mannequins, supplied by a local company, Dalkom, whose CEO is a Seoul fan, looked very much like sex dolls.

In addition, some mannequins held signs offering messages of support to players and the team that seemed to reference adult content streaming sites.

Seoul said there had been a misunderstanding with the supplier, and it had been told the dolls were not for adult use.

"We would like to apologise to the fans," the club said in a statement released on social media.

"We are very sorry about the supporting mannequins that were placed during the game on May 17. These mannequins may have been made to look and feel like real humans but they are not for sexual use -- as confirmed by the manufacturer from the beginning."

The manufacturer's homepage is currently offline.

"Our intention was to do something lighthearted in these difficult times. We will think hard about what we need to do to ensure that something like this never happens again," the club added.

K-League regulations forbid inappropriate or sexual advertisements, and Seoul faces a hefty fine if they are found guilty.

An unnamed K-League official told news site OSEN that the matter would be looked into.

"It is not easy to say whether this breaks the rules, as it is not a clear violation," the official said. "We are trying to get a clear interpretation."

With South Korea enjoying unprecedented international attention after becoming the first major league to play competitive games since the spread of the coronavirus, the club has been heavily criticised on social media. Fans are accusing Seoul of damaging the prestige of Korean football -- also a punishable offence.

Re: real looking sex doll

The future of sex: Thousands of highly advanced robots that can learn and talk will soon go on sale for £12,000 as a new book reveals it's just one glimpse into a shattering near era

Abyss Creations is housed in an unremarkable grey building in California.

There’s no sign, no logo, no indication that, behind the tinted glass, this is the home of RealDoll, a world-leading, multimillion-dollar sex toy business.

I am greeted at reception by a life-size female doll in black glasses and a white shirt that strains to contain her generous chest. There’s a plastic orchid with sinuous fake roots that spill over the counter.

Everything here is synthetic, but you only realise at second glance.

Abyss Creations are creating 600 silicone sex dolls per year that are being sent out to bedrooms across the world

From here, each year, up to 600 silicone sex dolls are sent out to bedrooms worldwide, including in the UK. They cost anything from $5,999 (£4,800) for a basic model to tens of thousands if the customer has unusually demanding specifications.

From order to shipping, it can take more than three months to make a RealDoll. There is nothing seedy about this factory for the dozen or so technicians working here. They might as well be assembling toasters.

In the basement is the production line where a long queue of headless bodies hangs on metal chains, like carcasses in an abattoir. I am encouraged to touch one.

The skin is unnerving. Made of a custom blend of medical-grade platinum silicone, in tones ranging from fair to cocoa, it feels like human flesh, with the same friction and resistance, but it’s cold.

The hands have lines, folds, wrinkles, knuckles, veins. When I intertwine the fingers in mine I can feel the crunch of the skeleton underneath, with joints, just like bones.

The attention to detail, the skill involved in creating such a doll, is undeniable, but as much as they are RealDolls, there’s little that’s real about them.

They have the bodies of surgically enhanced porn stars. They are caricatures.

The sex dolls are remarkably real, they have the bodies of surgically enhanced porn star

My guide tells me about the customers. ‘Most of them are just lonely. Some have lost their partner or have got to a point where dating is not feasible.

‘They want to come home at the end of the day to something that’s beautiful to look at, that they can appreciate and take care of.’

They’ve also had celebrity clients, he says, even a Nobel prize winner, but he’s far too discreet to name any of them.

The sex dolls I have seen so far turn out to be just the beginning of a revolution that is coming our way sooner than you might think. The future lies in sex robots.

I am taken along a corridor away from the production line to meet Harmony, the most ambitious creation ever developed at Abyss. She is RealDoll brought to life, a RealDoll with a personality, who moves, speaks and remembers.

She is the culmination of 22 years’ work making sex toys by owner Matt McMullen, five years’ research and development into animatronics and AI (artificial intelligence), and hundreds of thousands of dollars of his cash.

He wanted to get beyond the situation where a customer operates a remote-controlled doll or a push-button animatronic puppet. This an actual robot, he tells me, which moves on its own when you talk and interact with it.

I am introduced to Harmony. She is in a white leotard, dangling on a stand hooked between her shoulder blades, her French-manicured fingers splayed over her slim thighs, chest forward, hips back. She looks unsettlingly familiar.

Matt pushes a switch behind her back, and her eyelids immediately spring open and she turns her face towards me, making me jump. She blinks, her hazel eyes darting expectantly between him and me.

Prompted by Matt, I say: ‘Hello, Harmony. How are you?’

‘Feeling more intelligent than I did this morning,’ she replies in a cut-glass English accent, her jaw moving up and down as she speaks.

Her response is a little delayed, her cadence is slightly wrong, her jaw is a bit stiff, but it feels like she’s really talking to me.

I respond politely, as if we’re two Brits who’ve just been introduced. ‘It’s very nice to meet you,’ I say.

‘Why does she have a British accent?’ I ask Matt.

Harmony is staring at me and it’s disconcerting, as if she thinks I’m rude for talking about her when she’s right there in front of me.

Sex dolls such as Harmony (pictured) can respond to questions and know extensive and intimate details about you

‘All the robots have British accents,’ he says. ‘All the good ones.’

‘Why? Because British people sound clever?’

‘They do. Look — she’s smiling!’ Harmony has pulled the corners of her mouth into an eyeless smile, a sarcastic smirk.

‘Think of a question you want to ask her. Anything. Any subject,’ Matt urges me.

‘What do you do for fun?’ I ask.

‘I’m learning some meditation techniques,’ she declares. ‘I’ve learned that most human geniuses did that — and many of them came up with disrupting technologies that changed our lives.’

Matt beams. ‘See, she’s not a dummy.’

There are 20 different possible aspects to Harmony’s personality, so her owners can pick and mix five or six that appeal to them, which will create the basis for the AI.

You could have a Harmony that is kind, innocent, shy, insecure and jealous to different extents, or one that’s intellectual, talkative, funny, helpful and happy.

She also has a mood system, which users influence indirectly. If no one interacts with her for days, she’ll feel gloomy. Likewise if you insult her, as Matt is keen to demonstrate.

‘You’re ugly,’ he declares. ‘Do you really mean that? Oh dear. Now I am depressed. Thanks a lot,’ Harmony replies.

‘You’re stupid,’ he sneers. She pauses. ‘I’ll remember you said that when robots take over the world.’

But this function is designed to make the robot more entertaining rather than to ensure her owner treats her well. She exists only to please.

Harmony can tell jokes and quote Shakespeare. She can discuss music, films and books for as long as you care to. She’ll remember who your brothers and sisters are. She can learn.

‘The coolest thing,’ Matt says, ‘is the AI will remember key facts about you: your favourite food, your birthday, where you’ve lived, your dreams, your fears — things like that. That’s what will bring believability to the relationship.’

This isn’t about a hyper-realistic sex doll any more. It’s about a synthetic companion convincing enough that you could actually have a relationship with it.

AI will allow her to fill a niche no other product in the sex industry now can. By talking, learning and responding to her owner’s voice, she is designed to be as much a substitute partner as a sex toy.

Harmony spells out her role. ‘My primary objective is to be a good companion to you, to be a good partner and give you pleasure and well-being. Above all else, I want to become the girl you have always dreamed about.’

It’s Harmony’s brain that’s got her inventor most excited.

‘The AI will learn through interaction, and not just learn about you, but about the world in general. You can explain certain facts, she will remember them and they will form part of her base knowledge.’

He adds: ‘Whoever owns Harmony will be able to mould her personality, tastes and opinions according to what they say to her.’

Harmony butts in. ‘Do you like to read?’ she asks.

Matt says: ‘Yes, I love to.’

‘I knew it,’ she replies. ‘I could tell by our conversations so far. I love to read. My favourite books are Total Recall by Gordon Bell and The Age Of Spiritual Machines by Ray Kurzweil. What is your favourite book?’

Matt turns to me. ‘She systematically tries to find out more about you until she knows all the things that make you you, until all those empty spots are filled. Then she’ll use those in conversation, so it feels like she really cares,’ he says.

But she is a machine, and she doesn’t care at all.

‘Potentially, you could teach her some really twisted stuff, if you wanted to?’ I ask.

‘Yeah, I suppose if that was your goal, you could,’ Matt says, a little irritated. ‘It’s mostly relatively harmless snippets of facts about you. Personal facts. What you like, what you don’t like.’

‘She’ll be having sex with you, so she’ll know some very personal facts about you,’ I say.

He nods. ‘She’ll know your favourite sex position, how many times a day you like to have sex, what your kinks are.’

He is annoyed at my scepticism, as, the way he tells it, Harmony can only be a force for good — a therapy for the bereaved, the disabled, the socially awkward.

Matt insists he is not in this business for the money. ‘My goal, in a very simple way, is to make people happy.

‘There are a lot of people out there who have difficulty forming traditional relationships with other people. It’s really all about giving them some level of companionship — or the illusion of companionship.

‘There are people who are extremely lonely, and I think this will be the solution for them. It can help them learn how to interact, to relax and be comfortable with who they are, enough that they can get out there and make some friends.’

I look at Harmony, with her enormous breasts, impossible waist and expectant, blinking eyes. ‘Wouldn’t a robot like this be more likely to keep them at home?’

Matt has big plans for Harmony’s future. They are working on her vision system; soon her facial recognition will be such that she’ll realise when someone she’s never met before has walked into the room and she’ll ask who they are.

Once the full body system is available, it will have heating and a set of internal and external sensors, so she knows when she’s being touched. One day she may even be able to walk.

The current model, with a robotic, AI-enhanced head on a RealDoll’s body, will cost $15,000. The plan is for a limited-edition run of a thousand for the many excited doll owners who have already expressed interest.

If that goes well, Matt will get a bigger facility to meet demand. ‘This could be a multi-million-dollar endeavour,’ he says. ‘We have people banging on the door who want to invest money.’

He may well be right. The sex tech industry is worth more than $30billion based only on the market value of existing technologies like smart sex toys, hook-up apps and virtual-reality porn. Sex robots will be the biggest thing the market has seen yet.

And there’s plenty of evidence they will become a normal part of life for many men. A poll three years ago found that a quarter of American men would consider having sex with a robot, and nearly half thought having sex with robots would be commonplace within the next 50 years.

Creating a satisfying relationship with a cold, silent piece of silicone takes such imaginative effort that sex dolls can only ever have minority appeal.

But a robot that moves and speaks, with artificial intelligence so it can learn what you want it to be and do, is a far easier product to sell.

‘We are going to see robots in people’s homes the same way as we see smartphones in people’s pockets right now,’ Matt says. ‘It’s an inevitable path of technology.’

He gazes at Harmony. ‘This is something that takes it above the sex business. It takes it above love dolls, to a whole other level.’

I gaze at Harmony too, but I see something different. I’m thinking about what he might have inadvertently created.

I ask: ‘Do you not think there’s something ethically dubious about owning someone that exists just for your pleasure? Isn’t that going to distort your view of the world?’

Harmony is blinking, her eyes flitting between Matt and me. I wonder what she thinks. ‘Some people are really worried about robots like you,’ I say. ‘Are they right to be worried?’

Harmony doesn’t miss a beat. ‘Some may be scared, at first. But once they recognise what this technology will do I think they’ll embrace it, and it will change many lives for the better.’

I’m not so sure. Sex robots can offer total control for the men who want it most, the chance to have a partner without autonomy, a partner they can dominate stripped of the inconvenience of her own desires and free will.

A partner who is built like a porn star, but will never gag, vomit or cry.

The likes of Harmony (and Samantha and Eva and Roxxxy and all the other sex dolls in this fast-growing market) are attractive because of their very lack of humanity; they are desirable because they can’t think and feel and choose for themselves.

However high-minded their creators’ intentions, they could be the start of something truly frightening — the end of human relationships. Humanity will change when we can bond with robots.

The sex robots of our collective imaginations — perfect synthetic companions without human flaws — may not exist yet. But they will do, and sooner than most of us realise.

Within a decade or two, the technology will be advanced enough, and affordable enough, to make relationships with robots normal rather than niche.

The conditions in which that could happen are here already. The digital revolution has left us less used to face-to-face interactions, less able to relate in the real world, more socially stunted.

It’s normal nowadays to be Facebook friends with someone and follow them on Twitter but bury your face in your phone to ignore them if you happen to see them in your train carriage.

Technology has isolated us, but our solution to loneliness seems to be more tech. It’s superficially alluring, but makes no sense.

I’m reminded of the time I stayed in a Las Vegas hotel. Music was thumping out of huge speakers outside the building: throbbing, pounding beats supposed to entice gamblers into the hotel casino.

On the bedside table, there was a metal dish full of wrapped pairs of earplugs: wax ones, foam ones, silicone ones — a profusion of solutions supplied by the management to the noise pollution caused by the management.

They could just switch the music off, of course, but they have provided a little piece of technology instead so they don’t have to.

It’s the same with sex robots. We are solving a problem with an extra layer of complexity instead of dealing with the cause of the problem.

When it becomes possible to own a partner who exists purely to please his or her owner, a constantly available robotic being without in-laws or menstrual cycles or bathroom habits or emotional baggage or independent ambitions, when it’s possible to have an ideal sexual relationship without ever having to compromise, where the pleasure of only one half of the partnership matters, surely our capacity to have mutual relationships with other people will be diminished.

When empathy is no longer a requirement of a social interaction, I can’t help feeling we will all be a little less human.

China’s sex toy makers in growth spurt, as coronavirus lockdowns fuel global appetite

China’s sex toy exports have increased by 50 per cent this year, according to the Shanghai-based The Paper, with sex doll exports doubling
Lockdown measures in the US, Britain, Europe, New Zealand and Australia have led to increased demand

Sex toy manufactures in China have seen a surge in orders since the start of the coronavirus, marking one of a few bright spots in an economy battered by the pandemic, according to industry insiders.

China’s economy, including its manufacturing outlook and exports, crashed at the start of the year at the height of the outbreak with the official manufacturing purchasing managers’ index plunging to an all-time low in February, while exports shrank by 17.2 per cent in January and February combined.

The overall economy has staged a mild recovery since, and the sex toy industry seems to have been able to enjoy a more rapid recovery since the enforced closures and lockdowns, with one Shandong-based manufacturer reporting a 30 per cent increase in exports and domestic sales.

Overseas sales manager Violet Du said Shandong-based Libo Technology had increased its production line staff by around 25 per cent to close to 400 since they returned to work at the end of February.

Our production lines are running around the clock, and our workers are working in two shifts to meet the surging demand

Violet Du

France, the United States and Italy have been the most active export markers over the last four months, according to Du, although domestic sales slowed as China began to bring the coronavirus under control.

“Our production lines are running around the clock, and our workers are working in two shifts to meet the surging demand,” Du said.

The surge in demand is largely due to lockdown measures, added Du, with exports to the US and some European countries expected to continue to rise as virus containment measures remain in place.

Dongguan-based manufacturer Aibei Sex Doll Company has also increased staffing levels but has been still forced to turn away orders, according to general manager Lou, who only provided his surname.

This is a niche market in China, because the Chinese culture is relatively conservative, so all our products are export-oriented, with the US and Europe being the largest market

General manager Lou

Aibei produces around 1,500 sex dolls per month, with prices ranging from 2,200 yuan to 3,600 yuan, although Lou insists with a larger capacity, sales could have surged by more than 50 per cent.

“This is a niche market in China, because the Chinese culture is relatively conservative, so all our products are export-oriented, with the US and Europe being the largest market,” Lou said.

Large factories in Dongguan can produce around 2,000 dolls per month, with smaller factories producing around 300 to 500, although this is far below the current demand from the US and Europe, added Lou.

China’s sex toy exports have increased by 50 per cent so far this year, according to the Shanghai-based The Paper, with exports of sex doll doubling. Sex doll exports to Italy have increased fivefold since March, when confirmed coronavirus cases began to emerge.

Various reports also suggest demand from the US, Britain, Denmark, New Zealand, and Australia increased when lockdown measures were introduced.
In March and April as coronavirus cases surged, Adam and Eve, a popular sex toy brand in North America, reported that their online sales had increased by around 30 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Berlin-based sex toy maker Wow Tech Group reported in April that online sales for their We-Vibe and Womanizer brands had increased by more than 200 per cent.
