KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) – Malaysia's HIV/AIDS infection rates are on the rise, dealing a blow to the country's bid to achieve the UN's Millennium Development Goal (MDG) to eradicate the virus, according to a UN official.

Kamal Malhotra, the UN's resident coordinator in Malaysia told state news agency Bernama that up to June this year, 82,704 Malaysians have so far been infected with the virus since records began in 1986.

In 2006, eight percent of Malaysia's population were infected with HIV/AIDS compared to five percent in 2000, according to the United Nations Development Programme Malaysia website.
Malhotra told Bernama the country could face an epidemic if efforts were not focused on drug users, sex workers, transsexuals, male homosexuals and migrant workers.

He said one of the best methods to prevent this continuous spread was better education and understanding of the virus itself.

Malaysia has embarked on a five-year plan to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS, launching a pilot needle exchange programmes for drug addicts in 2006.

Malaysia has around 23m in population. 8% of the population means nearly 2m people with AIDS?? thats a little too much right??

8% of 27 million is 2.1 mil. There are 2.1 mil people with AIDS in Malaysia? Someone got a F minus for his maths?

It's not 8%, but rather 86k ppl infected/carry the virus. but it's scarry enough already....

According to the article, most are transmitted through sexual activities... and not through sharing of needles...etc.

though not 8%, 86k is a LARGE NUMBER IN MALAYSIA already.....

Aids... yeah yesterday was World Aids Day and i read a some articles that write about HIV. After active in cheonging scene for a 10 feel good years and now thinking to retire cause i sked will kena HIV...

Actually no. See the UN report. 72% of infections are from intravenous drug users; this is up to 2006. But in recent years, there has been an increase of women infected, probably via sexual transmission.
