Requirements of the Protection from Harassment Bill

1) Cyber bullying:

The new bill requires that
- If the conduct is deemed to be harassment, the court can issue a personal protection order (PPO) requiring the harasser or website owner to remove the offending material (including websites hosted overseas).
- If the victim can prove that there are false statements alleged against him/her online, the court can direct the harasser or website owner to publish (eg in the form of hyperlink) that those statements are false.
- Failing which, the harasser is deemed to have committed an offence and criminal sanctions can be imposed. This can even result in a fine and/or custodial sentence.
