Their motives are the money and not after one's life, but one must also understand life is cheap in China, comes with a value and it is a very Big Country with a different culture, therefore sometimes reaction can be extreme or out of control.
Local Authorities/Gong An etc. are very lazy cum inefficient (but not all, some are really good), and they received tonnes of such complaints everyday, so you can bet that they will push your case around until Christmas arrived!
Do not and never use the SGP way of thinking to apply to the Chinese Context, it does not work here in China.
Most important everyone is safe and soundly left Ah Tiong Land. Be careful everywhere we go, not only in China, and even with recommendations from Bros here, also be careful (sorry to say, but no offence meant, some are also out to make some bucks out of fellow citizens), therefore have your own judgement, spend within your budget, and come and leave safely.
