what you encountered I saw before...so I am careful not to repeat others mistakes...usually I flew off from the moment the plane door opened...then I shall be the first few to reach immigration...and I usually stop at the line to wait for the officer to signal that he/she ready to chop my passport even though the lane is open...sometimes I will help to open the swing door if the officer showed intention to start the counter or indicate hand signal for me to open the swing door...when I reached the officer, it helped to speak a few greeting words of tieng viet and also the flight number...
if all lanes are occupied then always good to choose a lane to queue and try not to switch lanes...then really is up to individual luck how fast the front can clear...i usually like to queue behind viets which always clear faster...
