In total agreement. They take a step backwards only to observe more, and most definitely not stupid. It's

The fact that there are so many above reminders in this thread just goes to show how conceited and arrogant SG people are. It is disappointing.
In the locals' (both chinese and non-chinese) minds. The bule is not generally welcomed in their hearts, next... is ... Sporeans. And truth be told, it took some time for them to observe and chat with me to conclude that I am "not typical Sporean" ** . And once the locals warmed up to me - they share their thoughts about Sporeans. Always often I would retort politely to say that Sporeans are genuinely ignorant, due to only experiencing
one-dimensional lifestyle in SG, and as a result cause discomfort
unintentionally to foreign culture. And that they (locals) would behave like that too if they were living in a country such as SG.
** "Typical Sporean" meaning :
1. Talk like a superior species, talk like "know-it-all".
2. Cocky
3. Dress in singlets and kaki shorts during their religious holidays
4. Outright stingy (pretext of going for the wallet but "too slow", do not insist to pay even after other party has paid for a few times).
Have my fair share of hosting SG friends in Batam - intro to locals and felt completely, utterly, irrevocably embarrassed by their genuinely-ignorant mannerisms and behaviour.
So please do Singapore a huge favour by reminding your friends/acquaintances to heed S.B.Y.1/NewYorker/Nono/others' advice below when heading to Batam for *whatsoever* reason :
