My 1st impression of Batam before i reach there was...Batam is going to be a VERY VERY dangerous place to be in,hehehe...i read about taxi drivers bringing tourist to expensive places to get chop,or some remote countryside to call expensive "chicks",to threaten or blackmail them, lots of drug lord, drug addicts, rob and kill situation,anti-Chinese etc etc...hehehe...it turn out to me that going to Batam is like going to Sentosa. (think i scared myself too much back then) Except all one would need is a more than 6 month validity legal passport, have a humble heart,a courteous behavior and a not-so-loud spoken mouth.
Safety has always been my number 1 concern and it still is today whenever i visit Batam.

Malaysia, however has many (non-service industry) things that are cheaper than Batam. I just made an apple to apple comparison recently.
Daily basic food,Massage, special service, overnight booking = Batam cheaper
1st hand computer parts, daily necessities, eg. shampoo,Vitamins, healthcare stuffs etc = Malaysia Cheaper
