SINGAPORE: A Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight enroute to Istanbul turned back to Singapore after the Istanbul Ataturk international airport was hit by suicide bombings.

SQ392, which departed from Changi Airport's Terminal 3 at 2.01am on Wednesday (Jun 29), was scheduled to arrive in Istanbul at around 7.45am (Istanbul time), according to flight tracking website FlightRadar24.

At least 36 people were killed and scores wounded after a triple suicide bombing and gun attack at Istanbul's Ataturk airport, in the latest deadly strike to rock Turkey's biggest city.

An SIA spokesperson confirmed that the flight turned back about five hours after taking off due to the closure of the Istanbul Ataturk airport. The aircraft arrived back in Singapore at about 10.50am.

There were 201 passengers and 14 crew on board the flight, a Boeing 777-200, SIA said.

“Singapore Airlines is saddened by the explosions at the Istanbul airport earlier this morning,” SIA said in a media statement.

Passengers were offered a rescheduled flight to Istanbul, which departed Changi Airport at around 1.35pm. The flight is expected to arrive at Ataturk airport – which has resumed operations – at about 6pm (Istanbul time), SIA said.

Passenger Jimmy Zamani, who was on board SQ392, told Channel NewsAsia that he was asleep on the plane when the pilot announced that the flight would be turning back to Singapore as the Istanbul airport had been hit by explosions.
