I just came back from hcm. Indeed, it would be difficult if you don't know the place well, and don't speak the language. But staying in tourist district is so boring. I ventured into there and came out in 20 mins. I prefer to ride around the other districts to find interesting food and fun places. sometimes when i don't have a bike, i called a grab bike. But you need to have a destination.
I like to go to vinh vien. It is a cluster of saloons, hot tocs, massage and dj cafes. The neighbouring su vanh hanh also has good food and fj massages. Hotels there are full of working ladies. In my opinion, unless you craves for the drinking joints, otherwise stay out of D1.
