The expression "buy a book" instead of "keep a flower" here makes a whole difference of sarcasm in setting the analogy between the book and the wife.
You spend money to have a book only for yourself, while if you have free access to a library you can enter and read whatever you want at any time (but just have to return books after usage).
While you hv to queue or sometime you need to make reservation for the loan...

Don't forget..
beside my book shelf,
there are many new books waiting to be loan out.
Those new books usually will parades in front of my book shelf at around 9-10pm and 4-6am.
I also see Bookworms wiggling in and out other bookshelves.
Luckly my book is old, no one interested.
