Most Singaporeans are so accustomed to their sanitized environment, to be not used to the hazards of the "real world" out there.
First time I went to Singapore, more than 10 years ago, the local guy who invited me for some professional reason recommended me:
"You can walk on Victoria St. to Bugis, it's safe, BUT BE CAREFUL AT NIGHT"
