After reading all the postings in this thread, my conclusion is vietnamese are similar to the PRC.
I still remember that more than 10 years ago when my parents went back to their village they have to spend thousand of dollars in angpow and dinners to all the villagers. I cannot understand why they need to do that.
In fact I alway think my parents are very stingy -- they refuse to send back money to their brothers, sister and the like whenever they write to my parents listing all their difficulties and financial woes they faced in the villages and asking for financial support. My parents only send to their brothers and sisters (uncles and aunties excluded) during the CNY and only about SGD50 per person.
All along I thought Vietnamese will be different -- they would not bother with their families back home -- this is what the matchmaking agencies told me
