Re: Cambodia (Phnom Penh)
Since i'm a PP regular (once every 1-3 months), i would gladly share my experience:
The main few places that i have been are Casa Club/Disco, Holiday Disco NagaWorld. In Casa club, you will rarely see Ang Mohs there. Main group of visitors are Asians. KTV is not so nice, don't expect beautifully decorated rooms. They have mostly viet hostesses, and some PRC. Tipping is about 15 USD standard. If you want to bring her out overnight, damage will be about 50-60USD. These girls are young girls who have friends all over phnom penh, so it would be good to get a contact and keep in touch. Because they can introduce you to their other sisters or bring you around and be your intepreter (most of them speak khmer). Casa Disco is on level 1, have occasssional pole dancing. there you can find girls from Casa Club, so it's an alternative way to pick up instead of from the KTV.
Holiday disco, one of the most popular local disco in Phnom Penh, very near to Casa. A lot of young girls go there and it is packed every night. There you will find younger crowd. Same thing, mostly Asians (i rarely see ang mohs there). If you're a big spender, request for a private room, and get the waitress or any of the PRs to bring the girls in (Believe me they will, they'll probably fill the room with girls in less than a few minutes. These girls are usually just viet/khmer clubbers or ktv hostesses). Overnight price for these girls are about the same market rate (Negotiable).
Nagaworld is actually a casino hotel, the only one in the heart of phnom penh. They have other casinos but they're around the border, about 150km away from town. Nagaworld has nice deco (5-star), and they have KTV rooms bigger than 4 room flats in singapore. They have a variety of hostesses, mainly PRC (very pretty), Viets. If you like to sing song and drink, there should be your destination because of the good sound system. The damage for PRC overnight is about 120USD, not so sure about Viets.
If you're a fan of the locals, you should try SOKA club, They only have Khmer hostesses (some pretty ones), mostly can't speak mandarin or english. They're very heartwarming but lack of communication makes it tough.
If you want a getaway from city life and enjoy the most beautiful scenery you have ever seen in your life. Go to Kheap. Beach, sunrise/sunset. Moods that can get you emotional, recommended if you're there with your gf/spouse.
If you think Phnom Penh is 3rd world, you're wrong. There are more Lexus on the road than you see Nissan Sunny in Singapore. And they have high class pubs and lavish restaurants that can go up to 100+USD/pax.
'Ok i'm in PP now, how should i get around?' - Go to NagaWorld, at the entrance of the lobby, there will be a Chaffeur counter. Just ask for a vehicle (You need not be a hotel resident) and they'll give you one. All you have to do is tip the driver. Usually 10USD, depends on what vehicle they give you. Nice MPV you can opt to tip 5USD more. Don't forget to ask for his number. If you tip him, he'll gladly pick you up and send you from anywhere you are. He won't even bother picking up hotel guests if they don't tip. (Cambodia is a TIPPING city) So prepare small notes with you wherever you go. Don't waste your time and take Tuk-Tuks or Motor taxis. You'll end up getting ripped off.
Food is cheap there, so don't mind the dirty outlooks of the roadside restaurants and muster some courage to step in and try their local food. They do have one KFC along Mittapheap (Shenton Way) if you insist on fastfood.
My favourite haunt for food is Lao Di Fang. Nice chinese food there and all kinds of animals up for sale. I tried the Ant-Eater, very nice. Paris restaurant (near PP hotel) has nice beef noodles.
There's only one shopping centre in PP, Sorya. Nothing much there. Careful when you shop at Central Market you might end up buying fake stuffs (They claim to be real).
One thing you should never do in PP is get drunk, talk loud, big gestures and get rude to strangers. Because you never know who you will be messing with. A lot of military/rich people/rich man's son there move around with armed bodyguards.
Try not to give the beggars there money (Although they might look very pitiful). You'll end up getting swarmed. Although i still give, what's a few dollars to me when you see the misery they're going through. I believe it's syndicate operated.
Don't worry about the police. (Your own risk). They can be bribed with regards to almost everything.
Well i hope bros out there visiting Phnom Penh will find this useful. Singapore will be boring once you get to Cambodia. Cheap trip, beautiful in it's own way. It will definitely be a stress relieving trip. Also feel free to drop feedbacks and comments on my recommendations. I too, haven't explored the darkside of PP =P
