Don't think speaking thai is a password with locals for clubbing. You'll be surprised that in clubbing scene, you get thais who get by without being conversant wiih local lingo. And thais are exposed to and (generally) friendly towards foreigners. Wear a smile and you'll be surprised at their receptiveness. On occassions, we even share tables and get birthday cake across next table
On your translation bit, get a talking dic aka long hair dictionary. Won't get sleepless in bkk, lah
