Best chance is be honest when applying to ICA. If and when kenah reject, go through your MP repeatedly until you get approval for a SVP. If extension for SVP or subsequent application for PR is not granted, go through same process with MP or even the anchor Minister in your GRC.
It will be tiring and frustrating. Endure it. Making it a routine in your life helps to make it tolerable. I know of at least one example where the fella's wife was caught and sent back for working illegally in a KTV. After repeated appeals through the MP she's now in SG and bore the fella kids. Happy family now.
Most important is honesty.

Saying that the use of a lawyer does not help is not justified since your cited example did not involve a lawyer's appeal. In fact, there is not an iota of evidence to support that contention.
This is not a poll thread to say whether a lawyer appeal works or a DIY/MP appeal rocks.
Even if when you are sick, you can choose not to see a doctor, your body may recover on its own. Some self-medicate and some see the doctor immediately. Some prefer to test his body's resistance powers and see how it recovers without any medicine. If you recover on your own, do you say "blah, that western medicine does not work, you do not need that medicine, you can recover on your own. That medicine is useless."
Re-read this thread from the start and see the REPEATED and FRUSTRATED lamenting about the failures encountered by the DIY appeal and the MP appeals. Compare this with the comments on a legal appeal.
Open your eyes and see, the world is not flat anymore. There is this AVENUE of a legal appeal to ICA to solve the problem.
