Sometimes, they have a real reason why they need to upgrade, but often, it's more to show off to fellow villagers. For example, my useless SIL, by hook or by crook, she borrowed so much money to build a City standard house in the village. Looks nice and modern, totally different from the houses there. Got bath tub ( don't know for what ), got air con etc. But she owed so much money. The house is surely for show off.
