I am using the standard Google Translator to chat on WhatsApp with my 5-6 Batam friends who do not know English. It's a bit annoying to carry the sequence copy/paste/translate/write/copy/paste ..... but it works nicely enough to sustain a regular conversation.
Google is not perfect and some translations look silly, but it's great to break the barrier of language. For example, "she" translated to Indonesian and back to English becomes "he", but once we know the sex of people involved this is not a major problem.

Please note that Google Translator, integrated with other standard smartphone tools for speech synthesis and recognition, can also work in speech-to-speech mode, which is simply great (beyond imagination just 10 years ago).

Another speech-to-speech translator to try is Jibbigo Translator (only for smartphone, no version available for PC). This was the only choice for speech-to-speech automatic translation before Google Translator became so good.
