Just like asking a girlfriend how many sex partners she has had, this is a question that no man should ask if he cannot handle the jealousy or insecurity when he hears the answer. It doesn't even matter if the answer his girlfriend or wife gave is true or not. It is simply a question that you should not ask if you can't handle the number, any number.

Societal expectations of women are such that it is not good for a woman to have too many sex partners and be considered sexually easy (or slutty). Women know that, and hence they almost surely lie about the number, and tell their boyfriends/husbands a smaller number than the truth.

However, I think there is a way to get a more accurate, but not surely accurate, number by asking her how many ex-boyfriends she has had, instead of asking how many sex partners she has had. The questions should be about her past relationships, the quality of the relationship, the duration of the relationship, and from this information, we can only assume whether or not she had sex with that man.

I don't think any study can ever give you a conclusive answer. If there was such a study, the count would probably have to start from the legal age of 16, but we know underage sex which is illegal happens and is not reported. Individual attitudes towards sex differ, and some girls may not be enthusiastic about doing it. Any study attempting to produce an average number of sex partners on the 'typical' (what is typical anyway?) girl is really far from accurate.

And it really doesn't help that women will surely mostly be untruthful about the real number.
