South Korean charged with attempting to bribe Singapore police

SINGAPORE: A South Korean national was charged in court on Friday (Jul 3) with attempting to bribe police officers to avoid arrest in Singapore.

Hwang Eunmi allegedly offered S$1,550 in cash to five police officers in return for not arresting her for prostitution activities, said the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB).

The policemen rejected the offer and reported the matter to CPIB.

"Singapore adopts a zero tolerance approach towards corruption. The CPIB takes a serious view of any corrupt practices, and will not hesitate to take action against any party involved in such acts," said CPIB.

Hwang indicated in court on Friday that she intends to plead guilty. Bail was set at S$10,000. The case will be heard again on Jul 10.

If convicted, she faces up to five years' jail, a fine of up to S$100,000, or both.
