Re: Reminiscences of A Flight Crew
Dear Brothers,
Many thanks for all those who upped me and all thoese who dropped by to read my humble thread. My lunch time and everyone is out for lunch. So I would like to address some of the queries brothers here have posted. The life of a cabin crew is not al that complicated. At the end of the day it is all about your objectives and what do you want to achieve by joining the airlines. Some joined the airlines and wanted to make it their career. Others like me were there just to make our bucks and leave after acquiring a reasonable sum of money in our bank accounts. The flying allowances were good. Despite the basic salary of just $500 those days but the allowances including laundry, transport, in-flight and best of all the meal allowances could chalk up to anything between $4000 to $5000 bucks monthly. In addition to the above, you also get to stay at 5 star hotels at most destinations and get to travel quite extensively. But the airlines in the early nineties was run like a typical military camp. There were many seniors who gave us a hard time on board and there was this stupid thing about seniority and you have to "kow tau" or bow down to their request all the time or you get "zapped" or blasted if you fail to attend to their request or if you are slow in responding. Some of the transvestites in the airlines were the worst supervisors you can ever work with. They are very good with their work but they hate women. They come on board with their foundation plastered all over their faces and walk like models wearing airlines jackets. It was indeed an eye opener for the new air crew. You has to have a skin as thick as a "durian" to withstand the pressure. Some flights might be a god one if the group of crew you are flying with are nice but some flights can be a horror if the supervisor or the chief are a nasty bunch of devils. But you just have to put on a smile and focus on your job. Never argue with the seniors. Just do your work and you will survive. Your shirts should be well ironed and starched with shoes polished and shinning when you report for work. For the guys, the cocktail concoction was important. It was best to memorize the concoctions for all drinks on board. Apart from that it ws also important to have god knowledge on food heating procedures. Heating up vegetables and meat are 2 different procedures. Ruin the heating of food and you get screwed. The airlines also provided weekly circulars and it was very important to read these circulars and understand the changes and new procedures implemented to keep ourselves abreast of the latest information. So it was a mixed of both good and bad and at the end of the day it was up to the individual to filter out the bad and make the most of the opportunities presented. The money was good many years ago primarily due to the fact that the airlines did not have to many aircrafts like today. So our overseas night stops were longer and the longer were stayed abroad, the more money we made. That simple! I will try to address all queries from brothers as much as I can to the bset of my knowledge. Cheers |
