What is it like to be addicted to sex? A self-confessed sex addict reveals how her addiction cost her to lose her husband, job, and baby.
According to a news report, 37-year-old Connie Chew says that whenever the urge to have sex hits her, she gets breathless, experiences hot flushes and images of making out with someone with flash through her mind. She adds that she has to fulfill this urge, no matter what.
As a result, Ms Chew goes looking for sex partners at nightclubs, and also indulges in cybersex and uses sex toys when she is 'unable to find a man'.
She reveals that she once had random sex with a former colleague and ended up at a budget hotel with three other men, all in the same day. When her binge ended at 4am, she decided to turn to her church counsellor, Katherine Ong, for help.
Her addiction has cost her dearly. She is twice divorced and was fired from her last job after an indiscretion was exposed. Her first marriage broke down because her husband was cheating on her. After her divorce, she went online to look for a relationship, and ended up having casual sex with several of these men.
Ms Chew met her second husband on a matchmaking website, and says she really loved him but did not enjoy sex with him. When her husband found out she had slept with a man she had picked up at a club in Phuket, the marriage went downhill.
After an argument with her husband where he called her a 'whore' and doubted if he was the father of her baby, she ended up sleeping with a foreign worker she saw at a coffee shop in Geylang.
Two weeks later, she had an abortion and sent an email with the medical record to her husband. The subject line read, 'Hope this makes you happy'. He filed for divorce.
Ms Ong says Ms Chew has been undergoing two years of counselling and her condition has improved. Whenever something goes wrong in her life, however, Ms Chew will suffer a relapse and urges will return.

When people reach this stage, I think it is no longer a purely psychological issue. They need real medical psychiatric help. If the "church counsellor" had been a more competent, objective and professional counsellor instead of those quacks which always say god can save anything types and referred her to SGH and/or IMH, I'd say with the proper medications she can get her condition under control and saved her from a lot of crap in life.
Always seek real professional help when the shit hits the fan.
