As I will be making frequent trips into China using Shanghai as a possible base, I would like some suggestions for hotels in Shanghai from brothers currently stationed in Shanghai.

I used to book Shangri-La in Pudong area but finds it far to get to city center with traffic and all. I would love the Portman but their room rates are as high as the sky at around USD300 per night. My criteria would be a decent hotel with modern amenities, i.e. good facilities with broadband access near city center so after hours allows me to walk around a bit. A friend suggested JC Mandarin but I am not so sure of its amenities.

A comfortable budget will be anywhere from USD150 to USD180 per night.

Looking forward to some ideas.

As your friend mentioned, JC Mandarin Hotel on Nanjing Xi Rd is a very good hotel, 5-stars. With all the ammenities you requested for. Also, right smack in the heart of town, high ends shopping belt area. Lots of local & foreign makan places around too, within short walking distances. The street of bars, Tong Ren Rd is also just a stone throw away from JC Mandarin Hotel, a mere 3 mins walk away only.

Also, you can try Equatorial Hotel - 4 Stars (owned & managed by LKN Singapore) on Yan An Rd, junction of Hua Shan Rd, central of downtown, with also all ammentities you want.

Both above-mentioned hotels are also within your budget of USD$ 150-USD$180.

No HC in Shanghai offers Ang Moh gals as far as I know reason being that the local police is very watchful and particular about having foreign gals selling, already the HCs are presumably paying out alot to bribe the local authorities just to have their present set-up operational.

Alternatively, you can go to Tong Ren Rd or Mao Ming Rd street of bars to hunt for ang moh or Russian FL (Prostitute). They are almost there every nite.....sitting at the bar, usually. Was told that the cost however are pretty high, about RMB 1,000 per short-time basis.

With that budget, you can cover at least 80% of the hotels in Shanghai. Problem is we do not know where you mean by downtown. almost 1/2 of shanghai is downtown so it depends on where exactly in downtown you want to be staying at. Personally, I like service apartments where I have access to washer and dryer. Amenities I do not care much for as I enjoy the life out on the streets of Shanghai compared to eating and spending time in a hotel.

Also, city center is not exactly the most happening place after hours. The places which are more vibrant after hours are the Hongqiao Gubei area, Huai Hai Lu, Tong Ren Lu, Xu Jia Hui, People's Square. Hongqiao being my favorite as it stays vibrant till wee hours in the morning. Plus the food selection there is excellent.

Couple of pages ago I made a list of the HC offering FS and most of them can offer you the kind of services I have described. Usual price 600 to 900 depending on the place. For some of the service y might ask the girl if she does it but usually you get good and satisfactoy service.

Beginner's guide to the KTV experience in Shanghai - Part 1/2

Many reading this forum will already have some sort of KTV experience in China. Shanghai, being one of the most expensive cities in china offers up a wide range of KTV experiences ranging from sleazy to super highclass with costs ranging from economical to bills making an investment banker blush. I will try to post some information from the most basic to Shanghai-specific here. So experienced readers please bear with me. I have learnt a lot from friends outside and inside of this forum. I would like to summarize what I know so far for newbies. Bear with me all the other bros.

Before I start, I wish to put forth a disclaimer. I am a customer and I do not work in any of the establishments mentioned in the following post. There are some establishments that you, as a reader, may think I am biased to. That is natural as this is personal experience but I am in no way profitting, directly or indirectly, from any statements posted in this post. You may get a different experience from some of these places because of the lack of rapport. Depending on when you read this, situations, ownerships and pricing may have changed in some of the places mentioned. By continuing to read this post you, as a reader, agrees to indemnify and hold me harmless against any expense, liability, loss, claim or proceedings whatsoever arising from actions taken based on the information contained herein.

What is KTV - you want any hostesses with that?

Karaoke TeleVision. A term coined by japanese (or taiwanese?), KTV refers to singing into a microphone to words posted on a television screen. There KTVs here in Shanghai that is family style, catered to people who just wants to sing – you can distinguish this type of KTV with the “Liang Ban 量版”(bulk version) or “Lian Ge Chang 练歌场” (song practice area) wordings somewhere in their brandname or signboard. If you are looking for the ones with female hostesses the wordings “Shang Wu Hui Shuo 商务会所” (business club) or “Ye Zong Hui 夜总会” (nightclub) are dead giveaways.

In a typical setup, there will be at least one TV screen where the MTVs and lyrics are played. Nowadys most KTVs also sport another computer screen which songs are selected and entered. Some places are still using books, especially places with mostly japanese or korean songs. The room will also come with 2 microphones as well a sound system. There will be couches (of course), tables. Nicer places have an attached toilets. Even nicer places (very rare in Shanghai) have attached mahjong rooms, jacuzzis, bedrooms, pool tables, etc.

The waiters will usually run in and out of the room with towels, your unopened drinks, and whatever else you order. We call these waiters “Shao Ye 少爷”. 1 or 2 waitresses (we call “Xiao Mei小妹”) will stay inside your room to mix/pour your drinks, get yours song requests into the system, cleanup. Mommy/Moma-san will be in charge of the hostesses (we call “Xiao Jie小姐”). Mommy will come in and talk to you first, and start to bring in groups of girls and arrange them into a line-up for you to pick your companion for the time in the room. Do not feel pressured and always remember you are the customer. If you do not see anyone you like, just wave them out and the mommy will get the next group in.

So, these are the people you usually need to tip at the end of the night: 1 Shaoye (usually the one that hands you the bill at the end), all the Xiaomeis that stayed and worked in your room, your hostess(es) and the Mommy. Tip amounts vary by the joint. So read on.


Warning!! - bad apples and tricks they play

Shanghai is relatively very safe compared to other parts of China. However, please exercise common sense and due caution anywhere you go. Sometimes you just have to assume there is no honor system here in China. The locals don’t believe in one and neither should you. Here are some of the common KTV scams – more tricks come up from time to time.


Super expensive snacks. You or your hostess pick these snacks and they get you in the bill at the end of the night. I’ve heard of a case where 5 orders of cheap snacks costed a poor soul 1000rmb. You can still get snacks, but ask and be sure how much they cost. Most places makes you pay cash at the point of ordering which I personally like.

plus plus plus. Expensive mixers, fruit plates. Ask ask ask. I can’t say more. If you know how much you will be drinking and it is substantial, ask the Mommy to comp it. They can usually do it. Ask for a price list for alcohol and for snacks, fruits or mixers so you will not be unpleasantly surprised at the end of the evening.

Ladies’ drinks. The hostesses will order some special drinks for themselves. Usually simply calling it “Yin Liao饮料” (drink), they can kill. Some people I know got conned more than 2800rmb for 12 small bottles of budweiser which costs less than 300rmb. The rest of the bill was for these “innocent” drinks. Ask how much they cost when the hostess orders them. The best practice is to ask the girls to drink from the drinks you ordered. If they do not agree, that’s a sign and send the girls out. They may tell you excuses that they do not like beer or whiskey or whatever you ordered. Gently remind them that they are working and if they cannot drink what you are drinking, ask them to leave. And DO NOT give them any tip for warming up the seat for short time.

If in an unfamiliar KTV, NEVER have any sexual activity (intercourse or otherwise) in the room. This is a very common con around china where halfway thru the act the doors will burst open and burly men will rob you blind while threatening to report you to the authorities or cause your bodily harm. If you are unfortunate enough to get into a situation like this, do not resist. Give them what they want, money or phone (ask for your SIM card back citing you do not want to lose the contacts). Ask for some money left for a cab ride. Walk out, remember the name and location of the joint and go straight to the nearest police station. Many do not do that for fear of legal repercussions or embarassement. You can actually recover most of your loss back. The police will go back to the joint with you and get the money and stuff back.

Bigger and more wellknown places are safer. NEVER follow any touts, pimps on the streets. They are usually getting a very high commission from the amount they are going to rip you off. Hit places you already know or introduced by reliable sources.

Types of KTV in Shanghai

High Class KTVs
These are very big classy and posh KTVs. Usually having more than 50 rooms, they have awesome facilities as well as many girls working there. Pricing in this category can range from expensive to super-expensive. Bottle of chivas may cost beyond 1k rmb. Hostesses in these kind of joints are usually very attractive as only the best survive here. They are also better trained and are more cultured. Please know these KTVs are usually not as wild as someothers. Most of the hostesses will sit with you, play dice, drink. They will hug you but that is as far as it goes. If you try more, you will see the defence going up. Tips range from 300-500rmb per hostess. 300-500 for mommy, 100 for Shaoye and 200-300 for xiaomei. If you want to take the girl back it is usually 2000-3000 for LT, 1500-2000 for ST, all inclusive of the tip for the night. A lot depends on your ability to negotiate and if you clique with the gal. These places are perfect for entertaining customers. KTVs in this category includes JinBiHuiHuang 金碧辉煌, TianShangRenJian天上人间, JinSeDaDi金色大地, Rainbow Room BinFenSeCai缤纷色彩, Club 151 (this is private and you need a membership if I am not wrong).

Mid-high priced KTVs
These places charge around 700-900 for a bottle of Chivas. Rooms are usually pleasant to posh although not super high class. Girls are still reasonably attractive but the ratio of pretty girls is not as high as Highclass KTVs. Number of girls working is also less. Hostess tips is usually 300. To take the girls back, LT cost 1200-1800, ST 800-1200, inclusive of the tip for the night. For entertaining these are still good and presentable. Places in this category includes JinSeYangGuang金色阳光, HuaDu华都, DiHao 地豪.

Wilder KTVs
The wilder KTVs ranges in prices and class too. I list them as a category on their own since a lot of readers like this category. They play a lot of games in these places and all I can say is that you will be very surprised. I do not want to say more here but you get the idea. Hostesses are not model quality but sometimes you find gems. What they lack in model looks they make up with fun and playability. Tips vary from 300-500 for these places but they are usually more reasonable. Some are still very posh while others may be more lacking. Exercise caution if you want to bring customers there. Check out the place first and guage on your own. Some customers may freak out. Some may love it. Places like these include: Hengyu Poppoint (Hengshan Hotel level2), Golden Globe Star 金球之星 (Higher class, 3 locations: Huaihai road, Gubei road, Kaixuan road), 7m (Xujiahui). In these places a bottle of Chivas cost around 800-900.

Mid-low priced KTVs
These places are still located in pretty central areas. These places charge around 500-700 for a bottle of Chivas. Some places rolled it into a package of around 800+ which includes all the mixers and fruits and stuff. Some of these places offer all you can drink beer package for 600 up to 4 people(guys) inclusive of room charge. The rooms are slightly more dated. The hostess selection is usually quite small and from other provinces. You can find a gem once in a while in these places. Some of the girls are very new to this and do not really know how to react. Hostess tip ranges from 200-300. LT is usually 1000. ST usually 800. Places in this category Sports Hotel Level 4 斯迫特酒店(Xujiahui), International Club (Hengshan Road). Not suitable to bring your customers.

Low priced KTVs
These places are in the outlying areas of Shanghai. The cheapest ones are out in the Shanghai countryside (it is not as far out as you think). Bottle of Chivas (if they have it) is around 400-500. Vodka is around 250-300. Beer is 20-30rmb per small bottle/can. Room is usually free but with low minimum spending amount. Shaoye and Xiaomei’s tips is usually 100. Mommy is 200. Tips for Hostess is around 200. To take out the girl ST 400-600, LT 600-1000 (just a guage, it is totally up to your negotiation skills and the situation). I will leave you to seek these ones out. I only know a couple of these kinds of places. Definitely a no-no to bring your customers.


More Advice:


If you entertain a lot or really love the KTV scene, you should try getting memberships. They usually comes with free alcohol in the packages and over a long run is substantially cheaper.

Knowing Mandarin is very important in this scene. Most hostesses are very bad in English. I have been able to arrange for Japanese, Korean speaking hostesses for my customers though. English is harder.

Always ask for promotions. There might be deep discounts for certain kind of drinks. Always ask the manager/mommy if they can comp the fruits, snacks or mixers.

If you want to take a girl back for sure, make sure you tell that in advance to the mommy before you make the selection. Some hostess will lie and agree so they get to sit with you and make that tip. They will find an excuse later to avoid going back with you. If that happens, talk to the mommy and get a replacement and send this one out without giving her tip. And if you are going to take a girl back, do not pay in advance, and do not give the room sitting tip. It is inclusive and give it in the morning before she leaves.

Just want to add a little bit, this "Low Priced KTV" is appropriate, only for the standards of expats and foreigners, there are even cheaper KTVs, in and outside Shanghai, of course "一分钱一份货" comes in mind, Bro Faidenk's cheapo KTV comes in mind (I Have been there as well), its a no for clients but for long term players in shanghai, there might be fun happenings there as well.

In terms of cheonging in Shanghai, I must say that its an expensive place to cheong, but i must add also we should not compare, because we want to cheong, what is actually the bigger question is what kind of standard or type of people you want to interact with. The posh? go Bar Rouge and Dragon, the model like quality bonks? High Class KTVs comes in mind, The village looks? BBS&Low tiered KTVs are the places to go.

I am a "near" permanent resident in shanghai, but before i encounter this forum, i have almost zero info about it at all, and i appreciate everyone has done to keep this forum healthy and running.

Recently been to a new KTV in town call the 823會所(Club 823 International Entertainment) It is along 江宁路428号和武定路交汇口. The place has a posh setting.... and facilities... The sound system are good and songs are updated. Furthermore... the girls are pretty... quite a lot of shanghai gals... tall and pretty... i heard cos it is new... the girls can just come and work anyday they want... dun need to pay the KTV any $$$$ so many pretty girls willing to work there!

The price for 1 chivas is about 980rmb....as for the room i am not very sure... the tips are for the meimei is 300... then the xiao mei and mummy is up to u.... but we gave the standrad rate...

All bros becareful of fake chivas around in KTV.... cos one of my colleague went to a ktv... after drinking the next day send to hospital.... due to fake chivas just becareful!. it can happen in big KTV too....

Rising crime in PRC China

Crime is on the increase in China. In recent months Beijing has repeatedly hailed its success in catching criminals, but this week a senior government official admitted that crime figures are on the rise.

On 25 May Du Hangwei, deputy director of the Public Security Ministry's criminal investigation bureau, told a news conference that "Gang-related crime is on the rise in China, as society is going through tremendous economic and social changes". Du blamed the increase on criminals from Hong Kong and Macau who are increasingly "trying to make illegal profits on the mainland".

Unusually for Beijing, Du failed to provide statistical evidence of the problem. Instead, the official pointed to figures showing the success of a three-month crackdown on gang-related crime which began in February and which has already led to the conviction of 28 criminals, some of whom have been sentenced to death for their offences. He said that police had received 3,700 tip-offs from the public, as a result of which it was currently investigating 1,013 cases.

On 23 May the Public Security Ministry hailed the success of a campaign against economic crimes. In 2005 alone police say they uncovered more than 60,000 cases of economic crime, arrested 50,000 suspects, and retrieved the equivalent of $1.79bn. Beijing is also eagerly awaiting the return of its most notorious economic criminal, the smuggling kingpin Lai Changxing, whom they expect to be deported by Canada in the near future.

Lai, who tops China's most-wanted list, fled to Canada in 1999 after he was linked to a massive smuggling operation in China during the 1990s and was accused of bribing public officials. On 11 May Canada refused his request for refugee status, and Ottawa intended to send Lai back to China on 26 May. However, his repatriation has now been delayed due to concerns over what fate might await him upon his return; under Canadian law the government cannot deport criminals if there is a chance they will face torture or execution, and China has promised only that he will be "judged fairly".

The police has also lauded its success in cracking murder cases. On 16 May authorities claimed to have solved almost 90% of the 30,000 murder cases in 2005, a much higher rate than in the US, for example (63%). The police dismissed the suggestion that forced confessions were partly responsible for the impressive rate, arguing that "such cases are happening less and less now".

But whether such successes are legitimate or not, Beijing's admission this week that the rate of gang-related crime is rising rather removes their gloss. Worse still, China's biggest-ever cocaine seizure, in May this year, suggests the gangs will soon have a major new source of revenue.

My baby FR here from my experience in Shanghai. Not a very good writer myself, and I will try to concentrate more on giving the information that is useful to help brothers with your way around. This is also with thanks to BroSGPShanghai69, who was my guiding light in Shanghai, and is an all-in-one great guy.

Monday night (1st night): arrived in Shanghai late afternoon, taxi from airport to hotel is RMB 160; you dont need to buy any coupon; just go out of the airport gate and turn right, walk to the end and you will see the taxi queue. All taxis are with meters so no need to bargain on the price. No toll fees for bridge or highway. About 40 mins to my hotel in town. My brother SGPShanghai69 was tied up that evening but gave me enough information for me to check things out. I did not score or bring any ladies back to hotel this evening so there is no section on any sex or ladies in this FR please.

8.30 pm Took a taxi to Heng Shan Street, and alighted opposite the pub called 'Bourbon Street'. You can see it clearly as it is located amongst brightly lighted restaurants and one shopping complex. It also has a huge neon sign at the top of its entrance.
Upon alighting from the taxi, I was immediately approached by a young guy in long sleeved white shirt "do you want ladies?, I introduce good one for you"; wha, so fast got OKT. Said no, as I feel this is always dangerous to go with a stranger, especially when I am alone. Crossed the street to B Pub; note of caution here please: in Shanghai, cars are 'bigger' than human beings. Whether you have the right of way, green light to cross, zebra crossing, the cars here dont giving a rat's ass about you. So please be double careful when you cross streets, they dont care if you get hit.

I have heard that there will be road closure and transport shut down at certain parts of the city which I cannot confirm these. But the internet will be at a very very slow rate or you can't even access the web at all. This I can confirm as my staff have called the China Telecom to confirm this. They only say it will be very unstable during that period to ensure the smooth operation of the 六国峰会.
But I reckon the decision still depends on your own company.

Glad that you enjoyed Yu Ping HC. Still my favourite as well. For the price, it is written 700rmb on the board but if you tell them that you and your friends usually pay 650rmb, they will give you the discount.
If you go there for a while you can get VIP card and pay only rmb600.

Btw, I pay RMB600 most of the times, I don't think you need the VIP card (I never show my VIP cards) to get discount, you just have to make friend with one of the managers there and tell him that your friends came and pay at a lower price.

If you are into BBS scene, the 3 most well known areas that I heard and know of are following. I haven't tried any them but just heard about them and passed by. A couple of times I ate in that region. Truly a lot.

If you do not mind going to hanghuaxinchun, you can get one to go back with you for 400 overnight. smartshanghai.com is a good place to see what is happening or not. But considering the "Admiral" is an Australian born, those places will be more western oriented. Never they recommend babyface and stuff, and more into where the DJs now.

Went to check out the most expensive, luxurious HC & Spa joint here, had a shock! VIP Room with 1.5 hrs of time min charges, with a gal to your selections, with a min 7/10 standard with all BBBj, FJ all inclusive cost only RMB 500 nett!!! Most of all, 1st time in my PRC Cheonging Life span, had the most comfy shower in a HC...on a bed that have water sprinkling from both sides, with the gal fully stark naked scrubbing you from head to toes, using her tits, her pussy. Feels like a king being served in the olden days..................

I had been trying out the 5th or 6th (aka ulu countryside) tier cities recently. Let me know if you need to know the standards in Yunan. I think there are a lot of hidden diamonds there with the minority groups there.

As for bath, you encountered the Jap bath version. That is good man. I am still looking for the Jap soapland type of experience here in China, where you lie down on a waterproof air mattress and the girl massage you all over in oil and the list goes on.. For other cities, in Tianjin you can get bath and HC experience for 168 all in. Or 268 if you request for 2 girls. Thanks for the recommendation on HC posted here by all brothers, and feel that I deserved to post my FR back for reference.

Visited the infamous YPHC today around afternoon 4.30pm all alone, entered the locker proceed to the spa, and was greeted by several attendants, haha, they even offered to scrub, but dunno whether got additional charge..so just proceed to the hot pool then to the lounge. I can agreed with Prince Fred as I was in Nanchang earlier this yr with my gf. But I managed to have shuangfei at the hotel that I am staying 华悦国际大酒店. They charge RMB500 for 1.5 hr of action be it in their HC which is inside the hotel or in the room. The HC have individual rooms with water bed, shower facilities with the toilet having glass windows facing the bed. That means they will shower you and clean you as what Prince fred had mentioned and do all the necessary stuff. I tried shuangfei in the hotel with 2 girls bathing me, sucking, licking, frolicking. RMB500 is already considered expensive in Nanchang as there are many more cheaper places I believe exist. 5 Star hotel charging that rate, so other will be even cheaper. The cost that I had to pay is RMB1,000 for shuangfei.

I am not a lao jiao in Shanghai, only went there twice.
I had a trip to shanghai last April.
I stayed in Rainbow Hotel. In the 30th floor, if I am not wrong, there is a
Pub or KTV.
It is a nice place with many China gers.

I went in and was greeted by their mama san. Very friendly and very direct. Told me that booking out of gers is 1200 yuan, if tcss with gers is 300 yuan. At last, I decided only tcss. Then mama san brought out a ger name xuan xuan. Nice looking and talkative. Maybe mama san see me a shy guy so choose for me a talkative ger. I did had a good time tcss with her something like a bf/gf relation. That night I never book her out as I just check into the hotel at 11pm and tomorrow still need to work.

2nd night, I went to look for her again but still tcss. This time round, i am a bit thick skin as I had drunk alot with my Japaneses boss. I scan from top to bottom of her. Nice figure with a B cup size. Still same reason never book her out. But I told her tomorrow around afternoon, I am free and I want to book her out. She agreed and will wait for me.

3rd day/ Afternoon
She bring me around Shanghai walk walk see see. Very nice feeling with her.
After dinner, we head back to hotel. When came to a point of 'F', I reliased that she is not a 'B' cup but a 'C' cup. Very nice and firm.

IMHO, if you are staying at Crowne Plaza Hotel, it should be near to the Jiao Tong University.

Not to far for you to go to any of the places, eg. HC-TRY is just abt 15mins taxi ride from your hotel. YPH is in opp direction, prob 20mins.

Look like you are very familiar with Shanghai afterall.
Indeed Fudan University is located near the Wu Jiao Chang area in Yang Pu District. As for the Crowne Plaza Hotel, I know there is one located at Pan Yu Road near to Fa Hua Zhen Road in Xu Hui District, the other CPH is located at Wai Gao Qiao. So when he said he stays near Fudan University, CPH, I am not sure where is this place. Prob bro nei nei can clarify.

Bro, what you need, you already have them; for me to be around, I think I am not a light house, rather a Huge Light Bulb............:D

Hopefully half of "Ye Zi Mei" won did not make your stay at whatever you are now a little bit tough.

Cab fare hikes kick in, some commuters to turn to MRT or buses

New fares for ComfortDelgro taxis kicked in on Monday.
During peak hours in the morning, a taxi commuter can clock up charges of as much as $8 even before the cab moves away from the curb.

First, $4 for the morning rush-hour booking fee, which kicks off half an hour early now, at 7am.

And then, there is the peak period surcharge, which is now $2 instead of $1 previously.

Adding to the $6 is the flag-down fare of $2.50 - 10 cents more than the previous $2.40.

Tallying up, just getting into a taxi can set a commuter back by about $8.50.

On the road, every 10 cents now covers a shorter distance.

Compared to the old taxi fares, a commuter now has to pay about 20% more for a 10-kilometre ride

Yet, having said so much, life here in Shanghai isn't that rosy too. Fortunate? I would merely say I'm fortunate to be alive & having a job for now bro....
Lots of sacrifices to be made when one choose to be here on a foriegn land, having to face all cultural reality & differences when one arrives initially.......the list goes on bro. I strongly believed that wherever one maybe at, it all bears it's pros & cons.

However you're right on saying that for the fact that now that I'm here, I can only go on to make the best out of my present situation and make the simple living to feed the ones back home.

China reports new outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease

China has reported a fresh outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, with 51 head of cattle affected in the nation's northwestern Qinghai province.

Cattle at three farms in Qinghai's Henan county began showing symptoms of the illness on July 1, and on July 7 they were diagnosed with foot-and-mouth disease, the agriculture ministry said on its website.

A total of 212 head of cattle were culled following the outbreak, while local agriculture officials quarantined and disinfected the farms and the surrounding area, the ministry said.

The case is the third in Qinghai this year, and brings to nine the total number of foot-and-mouth outbreaks to strike China so far in 2006, according to the ministry's website.

Foot-and-mouth is a severe, highly contagious viral disease affecting cattle, pigs, sheep and other cloven-hoofed livestock. It is not usually fatal but causes losses in the production of meat and milk.
