I also have many such encounter, at one of the occasions, I told him not to follow me. He replied that Nanjing East Lu did not belong to me, he could walk anyway he liked. I told him off, by saying that "You can walk to anywhere you like, but do not talk to me!". I laughed loudly and walked off. Becareful, we cannot hid ourselves being a foreigner in Shanghai. They are smart.

Propose that you try Shanghai Hotel HC at 2nd level as it is located within the heart of downtown (JingAn district) on Wu Lu Mu Qi Road, junction of Chang Le Road.
Also, if u could, u might as well check in to Shanghai Hotel to stay as it's a relatively clean and nicely decorated, centrally located hotel (4-Stars). Most importantly, this hotel is owned by the Nanjing Army so it's definitely very safe to f@#k around inside this hotel u know........:D....................no Police would dare to go raid this hotel or its ammenities within this hotel lah.
Also, lots of bars & rests along within its vicinity. You'll be spoilt for choices for recreations & makans.

Bro, I do not think it is a current trend to be humble. Rather, it is a good practice to be humble. Hiding one's mis-adventure or failure does not amount to be called "humble", it is a choice. You are very correct to say that we have paid for the mistake by our hard earned money and/or feeling,

Tks for your input. SN in Shanghai now is the major night life apart from KTV. The price now is ranging from RMB500~900, depending on the service provided. Those serviced with soap bath (Japanese) would charge higer (RMB800~900).

Try it out next time when you are in Shanghai.
