2016: Klopp talks about Paul Pogba.

If you bring one player in for £100m and he gets injured, then it all goes through the chimney. The day that this is football, I’m not in a job anymore, because the game is about playing together. Other clubs can go out and spend more money and collect top players. I want to do it differently. I would even do it differently if I could spend that money.

2017: Klopp breaks world record transfer fee for a defender.

2018: Klopp resigns.

By paying such a high price for VVD many fans are questioning is Liverpool overpaying for a player ? Also with such a high price Liverpool fans' expects the defense to cut down on individual errors and leaking in goals . Now hopefully Liverpool will be able to get another world class stopper to replace Shaky Simon . Klopp better start winning something and he cannot complain that he did not receive any backing from FSG . I only hope that VVD will not disappoint us . Once again Sotong will be laughing all the way to the bank .

World record transfer fee paid by Liverpool for a defender.

Is this a statment of intent, a desperate measure or goodbye to Coutinho ?

Couti will be sold for sure. Earliest in Jan or end of this season. Pool has put a £150m price tag on him!
I find Couti is a better player now than last season. Last season he tends to drift off in the 2nd half but not anymore this season!

He has been a consistant player so far this season . If he is not scoring he is providing an assist . He makes a better captain than Hendo . Love his professional attitude unlike VVD . Next to go will probably be Bobby most likely next year . Can is also leaving .

All fans want to see VVD and Matip in the central but Klopp might think otherwise. :D

Looks like Klopp looking for another defender to partner VVD?

Can claimed he leaving because of Keita coming in?

Klopp looking to replace Can with another big name? Many names thrown up in the transfernews but I think he wanted Thomas Lemar.

Klopp looking to sign a big name goalkeeper.

If Klopp can get the players he wanted and fill the jig saw puzzle then think the team will be able to compete very well.

VVD was already valued at 70mil during last summer. Manchester City are looking to snatch the deal away so it is important that Liverpool did the business quickly.

Chelsea and Scums is questioning why they are not looking to sign VVD too?

At.Mad's goalie Oblak will be the best buy currently. He's the best now apart from De Gea n Courtouis.
Looks like majority of the Pool's youngsters from the academy won't have a chance to break into the 1st team anytime soon if Pool keeps buying new players..Players like Woodburn, Ojo, Kent, Brannagan etc...will be sold to lower clubs eventually.

With VVD, another defender and goalie then Liverpool should be able to challenge top 4 this season else still 5 or 6.

At that price VVD is going make or break Klopp.

Apart from a good GK we also need a proper solid DM.

And probably a like for like replacement for Coutinho when he eventually goes to Barca.

More likely as replacement for Lovren...... Klopp's dream CB pairing is Matip / Van Djik since day One when he came to Liverpool. Two tall calm sturdy ball playing defenders which in his eyes has the potential to be form one of the best CB partnerships in the world. Let's see how his dream pairing turns out.

Praised him until over the moon even before he kick a ball for Liverpool . Lets see whether he can adapt to Klopp's tactics or not . Liverpool still need some more good players in order to challenge Man City and Chelsea . Expect Klopp to rotate his players for today's game.

This a game we absolutely would've lost or at best drawn previously. The team is learning how to cope with the low block:cool:

We'll see how we do at Burnley as Dyche has them well-drilled.

Mohamed Salah is the first Liverpool player to score 23 goals between August and the New Year since Roger Hunt in 1960:cool:

Just hope his limping off is nothing serious.

It is obvious the Fab 4 cannot play together. Watching them play for 2 diffrent games will tell the same story.

There was no connection and they are not in sync. When these 4 play together there are too much spaces in the midfield and soon other teams will explore how to use this to their advantage.

We do not have players such as Matic or Kante to sit back and hold down the midfield. The positive news is Coutinho and Salah seems to connect well.

At the present moment, looks like Lovren is our best CB now. that silly hospital pass from Matip to Can that led to the goal isn't making it easy for Klopp to select him with Van Djik. Based on recent performances, both Klavan and Lovren are ahead of Matip to partner Van Dijk

The midfield was not at its best. At the end of day, still need the attackers to save the day and get 3pts. Not a perfect performance but at least the Reds battle back from a goal down to get a win instead of losing 2/3 goal lead.

Even with the arrival of VVD he will not be able to solve the leaky defense by himself . Liverpool still need a world class goalkeeper another centreback who is strong in the air . Also a defensive midfielder to protect the back 4 . With can expected to leave soon. Henderson definitely not suited for no 6 role . Now for the next game . Hope Salah's injury not too serious . He should be rested . Don't know what is wrong with Mane.

yes agree.
we still need a good world-class GK in the mould of De Gea or Courtois.
there's so much VD can do, one man cannot maketh a team.
maybe he can serve as a role model n show the younger ones the rope.
n i think he was also signed as a future Captain too.
still miss the good old days when we had Hyypia-Henchoz in defence. their partnership was great, our defence was rock solid then.

Agree it was a lucky win
Considering the balance of play and chances, draw would have been a fair result.
I guess when we saw the ‘shocking lineup’ many of us must’ve mentally prepared for worst.
True enuff play was scrappy
Misplaced passes aplenty
And it was like seeing strangers play for the first time together

Plus points:
Lallana had a good game, incl the goal-saving tackle
Mane tho sluggish at times took his chance n scored a great goal
Defenders Klavan n Lovren might have felt the threat of VD, redeemed themselves with a surprising match winning performance!

Success is measured by the number of titles you win. Celebrating the fact we struggled to win Burnley shows how far this club has fallen back.

We cannot use the reason that the season is in the early stages. 22 games are played in the league with 16 games to go which will be very costly if we lose focus.

Arsenal and Tottenham are very close to us and have games in hand too. We are well known to crack under preasure so we need to be humble and get the job done.

It was certainly nice to see Mane scoring again . He should have scored more had his shots been more accurate. Perhaps he and Solanke should practise more at shooting the goal mouth . This is encouraging as the second team have enough quality to get a positive results . This will only help Liverpool in the long run. Looks like our No 10 will be going to Camp Nou after all . If you are genuine supporter than you will not be confused.

The football world today is about money.

How much Man City spent over the last few seasons and including other big clubs in Europe. Of course money dun buy trophies every seasons but assembled the best teams to fight for any major trophies.

Liverpool have no choice but to fight in terms of buying best available players.

Look at Leicester and Tottenham. Both clubs did not spent much and instead lost players to other clubs. Suffered the consequences of not playing to previous season standards.

As for Liverpool, Salah was the difference and Mane was signed last season. Liverpool hold off Coutinho sale and now going to buy more players.

Jose from scums lamented they didn't spend enough. Pep and Jose are 2 managers that will choose their clubs and players. Both will not go to any clubs without budget to spend big.

For me it is very simple . Klopp has not won any trophy yet . He only manages to secure champions league last season . This season the team is struggling to stay in the top 4 . He is still clueless about Liverpool's leaky defense . His soccer philosophy is staring to bear fruit . What is worrying though some of his top players do not share the dream with him .

Liverpool history in the last 10 years tells the fans why players want to leave. In 5 years Coutinho is 30 years old and what has he won?!?! Unless this club can win the League and Champions League soon players will want to leave!!! Liverpool must start winning titles to establish the club as a European powerhouse or risk losing good players.

Coutinho has displayed the same pattern he did in the summer!!! Transfer window opens and he missed 1 game with unheard injury. He will also miss the FA Cup with blue Everton!!! He must have gone on strike again!!!

Coutinho only goes if we are able to get the replacement we want. Looks like talks for Lemar may have started once again?

Also probably more important for us to get a world class DM first. Mignolet and Karius can carry on for now but of course better if we can get both a world class DM and GK now!

As for Can, his failure to get back on Everton's goal shows why he won't be missed by anyone. The Reds extended their unbeaten run in the Merseyside derby to a club-record 16 matches. So sweet. The 16-match stretch is one better than Liverpool's previous best unbeaten run against Everton, which ran from 1972 to 1978.

Credit to VVD for a good debut performance. Commanding and good aerial presence which are the qualities we needed and lacked.

The defence is only 1/3 sorted out because both Robertson and VVD had a good game. Robertson got his body heavily involved and when he improves his crossing he will nail down the left back spot.

The other 1/3 will be solved when we sign a new quality goal keeper. I hope Oblak will be our 1st choice and hopefully he wants to move to Anfield too.

The final 1/3 will depend on how Matip or Lovren improve to partner VVD while Gomez or AA cover the right back slot firmly in the absence of Clyne.

Disappointed with Can as he shouted back at some Liverpool fans during the match. His performance was poor and maybe he had slowed down because he decided to leave.

We need to sell Coutinho soon and I feel we have a great power in doing it our way. Should not be bullied by Barcelona and cave in.

Got no problem with anyone wanting to leave the club when they dont wish to be there but it has to be on our terms.

Barca and Coutinho have acted poorly and selfishly which ever way you look at it and comparison with VVD is misconceived because in VVD's case he is not cup tied in CL and Southampton have nothing to play for and appear to need the cash to buy a good striker.

There is absolutely no good reason why Barca and Coutinho could not have done a deal similar to the Leipzig/Keita deal i.e. sign now and move next season. Coutinho cant play in the CL this season and Barca dont seem to need him urgently for the remainder of La Liga either. So why the rush?

Whichever way you look it, Coutinho leaving now puts an unnecessary higher risk of us not making Top 4 and also progessing further in CL.

Still wish Coutinho well but end of the day he falls into the Owen, Torres category to me, ambivalent feelings if he ever returns to Anfield unlike say Suarez who acted more decently in the end and who will always be warmly welcomed to Anfield by me.

we should raid FCB CB Samueal Umtiti who has a release clause at 60 million Euros. if we don't Pep/Man City will most likely got for Umtiti.

Ah Gong feels that no player ; manager and or club owners greater than the club. Sadly after FSG took over Liverpool have not won any major titles. Ah Gong won't be surprised most of the players coming to Liverpool won't last long and the good ones will eventually put in a transfer request . Liverpool must start being ambitious and start to win trophies . If not Liverpool will only be a mid level team. Ah Gong one thing have to say is that Coutinho is being professional until the last match he plays . That Ah Gong have no problems with. Ah Gong wish Coutinho and his family all the best at his new club.

Good Luck to Coutinho!!! Disappointed on how Coutinho pushed for the transfer to happen. Barcelona should be very ashamed because the club made the situation difficult for Liverpool and Coutinho!!! Previosuly Barcelona made a problem in the Suarez signing!!!

This is a valuable lesson for Liverpool especially the owners. Better start winning important titles and establish the club as one of Europe's elite soon!!! Players will always want money and titles!!! Loyalty shown by Maldini or Gerrard is no longer in the modern game!!!

Coutinho wanted to leave earlier but he stayed and did he play well? We dunno what was the negotiation between Barca and his agent. Barca might issue a come or never. Looking at Liverpool, nothing can be achieved but joining Barca, league and CL titles are possible season after season.

Why dun u label VVD as asshole? Why will u accept an asshole to play for Liverpool? Again, there is a group of so called "small heart" human, favor u, u praise, against u, u condemn.

U might have your reason, your special character, your way of life but for me, just move on.

King kenny got it right, why waste time on ppl who don't want to be @Anfield.
To be fair to Coutinho, joined in Jan2013, left in Jan 2018, 5 years but without any trophy, any lesser player could have left after 2 or 3 seasons. Between Suarez and Coutinho, Suarez would be a bigger loss to the Reds as his goals almost propel the Reds to League title back in 2014 until Gerrard literally slip up the title hopes.
Lets dwell on the positives, bought for 9 mil£, sold for 146 mil£.
Never sell to rival league teams, especially the 2 Manchester clubs.
And finally what i would call the ex-Manure The Traitor "Micheal Owen Good omen", that is when a jinxed player left, the Reds finally win a big one, perhaps the League title next season or even the CL this season. Yes, me and Klopp, we are entitled to our deluded fantasy dreams.:D

Coutinho looked happy when posing for pictures before Barcelona game. What he said was deep!!!

"I'm very happy, very happy. To be able to play, win titles, make the fans happy, always play with joy. It is incredible to know that I am going to live with idols, players with a lot of history. I would not have left for any other club, but Barcelona is something different. It is a dream, a place of magic for me.

Think Coutinho owes Klopp some gratitude because I sense Jurgen helped Philippe to take his game up to the next level.

Now its time for Lallana and the Ox to take their game up to the next level, oh and for Mane to bring his game back up to the same level like last season.

As for King Kenny, i recall when mighty mouse Kevin Keegan left for Hamburg after Rome77' and the great Bob Paisely bought a scot from Glassgow Celtic named Dalglish to replace this Anfield darling, I had no clue who he was as i was then just a young boy who only followed english first division footie. Can't say you can blame players such as Torres, Suarez and Couthino, it actually reflects on the club ambition how far and deep do they want to go to get what they want cos end of the day its still about the medals....teams such as Chelsea, Man City, Real and Barca...we don't like the way they are ruining the market with their buying power but end of the day they are getting what they pay for...unfortunately for Liverpool...their ambition has not been matched by their buying power..

What is the difference finishing 5 yrs, 4.5 yrs, 3 yrs contract? Coutinho did want to leave Liverpool since last transferred window, unfortunately it did not go thru and he still played for Liverpool and did his performance dipped or did he run less 1 km on the field? VVD your idol?

Some people keep harping on the fact that Coutinho has left because Liverpool did not win any silverware during the 5 years he was with the club.

Well in the 2015/16 season during Klopp's first season(well part season), Liverpool got into 2 cup finals. On both occasions, Coutinho was quite lacklustre, particularly the Europa Cup Final where he went missing. So its not all one way street.

Back to our present situation, looks like Klopp shall not buy unless he get's the player he wants. The other thing I noticed is that Klopp is not relying on one playmaker, he talks about the team as a whole (even when Coutinho was with us) which is a good thing.

We shall lack the creativity that Coutinho brought to our game but I think this shall be replaced with more power, press and speed from our remaining 5 attacking players: Firmino, Salah, Mane, Lallana and the Ox.

Not a good plan to buy players in January especially with £100m extra in the bank.

Summer is a good time to start the signings.

If they are available now, I rather Liverpool buy Jan Oblak (Atlético Madrid) and Lars Bender (Bayer Leverkusen). Together with VVD, we would then have the right balance notwithstanding the loss of creativity from Coutinho's departure. A top GK and solid DM is what is sorely lacking at the moment. Attacking options I would leave it to the next transfer window in the summer.

The players wants to leave!!! Especially when he knows the deal is done for the summer his mind will not be focused. Same with Coutinho if Klopp kept him beyond the January transfer window!!!

Klopp must be very disappointed that his first team players are leaving the club. He better start winning some trophies if not more players will be leaving Liverpool soon. I don't blame the players wanting to leave Liverpool if they had not won anything in the last 5 years.

Interesting interview by former Liverpool legend Phil Thompson with Klopp just before tonight's big match. Found this bit below enlightening! Looks like Coutinho was not going to turn back, it was nou camp or bust for him.

http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/11205251/liverpool-boss-jurgen-klopp-talks-philippe-coutinho-virgil-van-dijk-and-man-city-with-phil-thompson

Klopp: Okay. Now it's getting serious!

Thommo: What a massive loss. Can I ask you the big burning question, now I'm a Liverpool fan? Why? Why now?

Klopp: We had no chance to use him in the second part of the season. We all tried everything to convince him.

Thommo: You tried for a loan as well, didn't you?

Klopp: I cannot give you the details, but we tried all you can imagine, believe me.

It started in the summer. That was the problem, it was really late. Philippe says, and it's 100 per cent the truth, I really believe that he wouldn't have left Liverpool for any other club in the world.

He was convinced he wanted to go, so in the second half of the season we couldn't have used him. Having a player of his quality and bringing him out there [to play], but his head is already away, and then he plays at 40 percent, gets injured or not, it's a difficult situation for the whole squad.

And so, that was the moment, we went okay, we have to do it. To make the best for us. For sure, he can fulfil his dream, but we are still here and it's a big business with the money.

Pom must agree that City players are deadly and they can score from all angles. They are not an easy meat to deal with. Pool did well to contain them for 80 odd minutes.

Pom really get cheesed off by Firmino as to why he always take off his jersey after scoring, earning an unnecessary yellow card for such non-productive antics.

"What the fuck was that?!" ; "Pessing from another planet!"; "Big Statement!"; Fifth straight home win against City; Moved up to 3rd(with 3rd highest GD), Sweet:cool:

Coutinho gone, no VVD and we still get a Fab Four with Anfield rocking and the roof coming off!!

Big performance by the Ox! He has now scored as many goals in 20 Premier League appearances for Liverpool than in his last 71 appearances for Arsenal. Some transformation and credit must also go to Klopp for this as well!

Huge shout out to Andy Robertson! Totally bossed Sterling and put him in his back pocket! Andy now owns the left back position! Again credit must also go to Klopp for this transformation.

And to think, just awhile back, some Liverpool fans were calling for Klopp to be sacked and asking for Rafa's return:rolleyes: Like Klopp said, its a long term project, so look at the big picture and try and have a bit more patience. After 28 years of waiting, what is another 1 or 2 more years of waiting?

As an aside, if I were a Chelsea fan, I would now be well and truly pissed off with Mourinho for selling off Salah and De Bruyne when he did!

Also putting aside my allegiance to Liverpool and just talking from a general football fan perspective, got to say Kevin De Bruyne oozes with class and it is a pure joy to watch his brilliant passes:cool:

Now back to being a Reds fan, awesome fabulous start to the week!! Perhaps it could even get better by tomorrow but then I maybe being too greedy eh?!:p

Karius certainly wasn't the worst goalie on the pitch today.:D Ok, great shot by Sane but goalies should rarely be beaten at the near post. Having said that, I still prefer Karius to Mignolet who should be sold in the summer.
Positive: The Reds put 4 goals past the runaway leaders which rest of the top six did not manage to do.
Negative: Leading 4-1 to 4-3, defence stills to be shore up for next season. Hope Ah Klopp dont think he has the finished article yet, get a decent confident goalie and more capable CBs in the close season for the long overdue league title next season.
Robertson, Gini, Ox, Can, Firmino were all fantastic. The midfield won the day for the Reds. They need to follow up against the smaller teams and not drop unnecessary pts in draws.

OMG. What a game!!! Liverpool fans' balls should be in their own mouth!!! Electric speed. Tough challenges!!! Quick pressing. Nice goals!!! The team must keep pushing!!!

Sad the goalkeeper allowed 3 goals. Klopp idea is defensive work is done by team!!! 1st goal Gomez was skilled by Sane as he was too good!!! 2nd and 3rd goal Robertson could have been helped more by others but Liverpool lost the defensive shape!!!

The signs are clear. Team must invest in proven goalkeeper to play week in and week out. 1 more centre-back and midfielder. No doubt Firmino is power!!! Any fans who questions that must have the eyes checked or should watch golf instead. The team needs a player to cover him because Firmino cannot play too much and get injured!!!

There are many pundits in the England and Spain. There are also some WORLD CLASS pundits in this forum!!! One pundit who is well respected and worth listening is Gary Neville!!! His comments on the match was well spoken!!!

The finishes were wonderful. They're a potent front three. I always think about front lines I wouldn't want to play against, I would not want to play against that front line!

With Coutinho they are stronger, but they make runs that I don't want forwards making against me. They run with and without the ball, they make runs between full back and centre-back, which makes you question when do leave them, when to play them offside, when to pass them off to your centre-back.

Jurgen Klopp has to be given credit for that. He's built a team that represents him and the way he wants football to be played. They're a really, really dangerous front three.

Just had a look at the latest EPL table details and I wonder how it would have looked if we sold Coutinho and Mignolet and bought VVD and Oblak over the last summer transfer window? Wishful thinking!

Anyways think the fight for 2nd to 4th is still very close amongst current 2nd to 5th teams. United now seem on the up and if they actually get Sanchez it shall be an added boost for them. Spurs also look to have found their mojo again. And you can never rule out Conte's Chelsea.

So still think its going to go to the wire. Imperative for Klopp to drill in some much needed consistency in our team for the remaining 15 games!

Now that the front end of the pitch is almost settled . FSG & Klopp must now turn their attention to Liverpool's defense . No doubt good players come with a hefty price tag . If Liverpool is willing to spend so much on VVD I am sure they should be willing to spend on a top class goalkeeper . Shaky Simon had proven to us that he is unreliable between the sticks . I have to agree with Bro Henry. When Klopp in, the team is not his. He needs time to get rid, buy and build. These cannot be done in a season unless we are Man City. As Klopp have spoken, rebuilding is a long process.

As for Karius, he was injured for a long time and also down on confidence when recovered. Klopp has to use Mignolet and cant afford to change too much. Again Mignolet has proven he is not the right keeper for us.

Above are my personal views.

Stats reveal most injury-prone players in Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool squad

Henry Jackson
News
20 January 2018

Liverpool have suffered plenty of injury problems in recent years, and statistics show which Reds players can and cannot be relied upon to stay fit.

149688

For once, it is hard to complain about Liverpool’s current bill of health.

Ahead of Monday night’s Premier League trip to Swansea City, Nathaniel Clyne is the only squad member out for the foreseeable future, with Jordan Henderson and Alberto Moreno on the cusp of a return.

Injuries have, at times, plagued the Reds since Jurgen Klopp arrived at Anfield in October 2015, with the manager’s demanding training methods seen as problematic by some.

It has now been revealed which players have been sidelined the most in the last three years, thanks to Anfield Index‘s Simon Brundish, a sports scientist who appears on the excellent Under Pressure podcast.

Joe Gomez tops the pile, with the youngster’s cruciate ligament injury and Achilles problem seeing him miss 85 games, and therefore, a whopping 59 percent of Liverpool’s fixtures.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Henderson is second on the list, with the skipper continually blighted by a heel issue as well as other long-term knocks.

The 27-year-old has been unavailable for 55 matches (38%), which is a real concern moving forward, especially with him captaining the Reds.

Liverpool Squad Injury Record, Past Three Years

149689

Adam Lallana has also been absent a worrying amount—31 percent of games—and Clyne’s current issues have seen him out 23 percent of the time.

Many would expect Daniel Sturridge to be right at the top of the list, but he has ‘only’ been ruled out of 37 matches in the last 36 months.

It has been more a case of Klopp choosing not to pick the striker, rather than being without him.

Also notable is the amount of action Dejan Lovren has missed, with the Croatian struggling with myriad issues since joining from Southampton in 2015.

On the flip side, it is plain to see who the physical machines are in Liverpool’s ranks—those who rarely ever find themselves on the treatment table.

Roberto Firmino, fast becoming Klopp’s most important player, has ensured the Reds have only had to make do without him four times (3%) over these last three years.

Gini Wijnaldum is even more impressive, having missed only two percent in that period, while Ragnar Klavan (4%) and James Milner (5%) also stand out despite their advancing years.

Andrew Robertson and Alberto Moreno have missed just five and six percent respectively, which is vital considering the energy levels required to shine at full-back under Klopp.

£30m striker agrees on transfer as talks continue at Liverpool

Posted by Cameron Hogwood January 20, 2018

149690

Daniel Sturridge is edging ever closer to leaving Liverpool as he searches for regular first team football in hope of reigniting his career.

The striker looks set to depart in the January window in aid of gaining the playing time he needs to fight for a place in Gareth Southgate’s England World Cup squad.

Recurring injury setbacks have cruelly tarnished the gifted forward’s time on Merseyside since his stunning 2013/2014 season, in which he scored 24 goals in all competitions as the Reds fell agonisingly short of winning the Premier League title.

He has since netted just 28 times and has managed only 14 appearances under Jurgen Klopp this season.

Sturridge’s time at the club now appears to be drawing to an end, with Liverpool’s front three of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino proving inseparable in the starting lineup.

The 28-year-old has agreed on a loan move to Inter Milan, which Liverpool are seemingly happy to sanction, according to Italian outlet Calciomercato.

The club recently slapped a £30million price-tag on the Englishman, which appears to have swayed teams away from seeking an immediate permanent deal.

It’s frustratingly common knowledge that a fit Sturridge boasts the natural ability to be one of Europe’s most prolific scorers.

The slightly slower tempo in Italian football might just serve Sturridge well in terms of cutting out the prolonged periods of explosive football and the high intensity approach that the Premier League demands.

Providing he can stay healthy, Inter would be getting a dangerously unpredictable forward with the motivation to make a name for himself in quick time.

Having suffered so regularly with injuries, a man of his talent deserves another spell in the spotlight.
